I was a scrub tech for 17 years. I met many that became a first assist but I was already first assisting and making more than the first assist. I also never had those experiences of being yelled at like that during those 17 years. I could not justify paying to go back to school to become a certified first assist when I was already doing so.
I just became a certified PA as that was the next step for me. There is not much more to learn in surgery for me. Surgical tech is an amazing intro to being in medicine. Just keep a cool mind and pay very close attention and be willing to ask questions. Also study your anatomy!!! Also work in nothing but trauma centers and at night if you can. You will learn it all. Amazing field and I will miss it. It is also a good way to get into PA school!!
Wow I love this comment. I’m currently in skills and procedures 2 and I’m so nervous for externship. My goal is to go back for first assist since my school doesn’t offer it unfortunately
this is so motivating! I just graduated & passed my exam and am excited to gain some experience before applying to PA school next year 🥳
Can you please guide me. I humbly request you
Cst dead end job, definitely not a "great intro."
Surgical tech here and wanting to go into surgical PA! This is a great start in my opinion and great experience. I work at a level 1 trauma hospital and I do a little bit of everything. It's taken more to learn of course, but it's great experience
Let's be honest, surgeons (and even other physicians) can be very emotionally childish, yelling and having temper-tantrums. I had an anesthesiologist yell at me one day while I was working on a nursing unit, he was upset because the secretary had left her desk and I couldn't find the surgical consent packets. I looked him in the eye and said "I am not YOUR personal secretary, and I will not be spoken to like that, find the packet yourself" and I walked away! I will not tolerate that kind of bullshit from a doctor or anyone else!
Lol, I hear you sis. They can be very rude.
Oh wow 😯 you go girl!
good for you!!!
You are so genuine, and you talk about everything. It really gives me a good insigth into healthcare.
Hiii!! Tyyy!!! Did we bore you lol I felt like we just talked on and on but I hope it gave you an insight.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK I hope for more videos of you donning alot of long latex surgical gloves
Great job and great guest. Wow! I am learning so much. Yes, some doctors will yell and be angry and probably want you to dismiss yourself immediately. If that gets to be the case, WAIT until another scrub tech is present and ready to take over for you. REMEMBER, at the end of the day, it's about the PATIENT and [respectfully] NOT THE DOCTOR. 😉😊
Absolutely! You'll never get in trouble for protecting the patient.
Thank you so much for this video! I am doing my prerequisites currently and I’m so happy I stumbled upon this career. I am currently a dental assistant at our local hospital. I’ve just been looking for an answer and career change thank you so much for this I now have clarity.
I’m so happy to hear this that is my plan to do cst then becoming a fa after 2-3 years
Great informative video! If possible can you do a video on what's the difference in all the different types of First Assist? Such surgical first assist, nurse first assist, PA working in surgery as First Assist. Do all the positions get paid the same amount as a First Assist? That would be an awesome video if you can get in contact with each of those professions and interview them at the same time!!!
Omg i love you guys 😍😍 Ana is insprirational
Small thing - Crocs make a specific line for service workers & nurses that are made completely different to traditional crocs. No holes, completely different bottom and sole. They're basically made exactly like Dansko.
secret band?
I'm and LVN and enrolled in a surgical tech program. I am excited for it. I was a bit nervous about to hear that surgeons can be rude and yell. But then I remembered that doctors have yelled at me before, even when catching their mistakes. I think I will be okay in that front. Just don't give a fuck in the end as long as you are doing what you are supposed to do.
As Long as ur protecting the patient, u will be ok! Trust me, I've been threatened before and I never ended up in HR.
How could you go from lvp to surgical tech? Lvn gets paid better. Or are you going from lvn to surgical first assistant?
I
Started clinicals this past week, we’re just observing for now like everything just makes so much more sense once you’re in the OR, it’s freaking awesome!!
Haha yes!!!! A lot of new students can't make sense of things but you will put the puzzle together once you get there.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK so true.
Mark my words.. I will cry the first time im yelled at lol
Hahahahah at least once is good. I only did it once and neverrrrr again!
I’ll have to work not to tell back. Lol but I know they aren’t even mad at me just under a lot of stress and pressure so I shouldn’t take it personal. But I May ACCIDENTALLY teach them interpersonal skills if they catch me on the wrong day lol
Me too lol

I'm so happy I found this video and guidance. This clarified a lot of information I don't think I would get until it is too late.
Also, I love your flashcards and booklet!
Aww ur welcome!
Omg I had no idea about CSFA. Go Ana!! I loved all this information.
Ty!!!! Did we bore you? Is the video too long? Lol we just kept on and on.
Its not that long but, if people feel like that they can always go back to where they left off. Your videos are very much appreciated and it's inspirational on top awesome information. Keep up the good work!!! This definitely inspired me!
Yay!! Ty! I appreciate the honesty.
Great info!
Thank you so much Kay keep these vids coming … lol I’m wearing 3 pairs of gloves… I’m excited to school and share my journey ♥️
Hahaha not the 3 gloves 🤣 don't exaguinate your fingers! IT hurts lol
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK lol I won’t just joking thank you for all your helpful tips I’ll make sure I grab your book as well Kat ♥️
@@ReallifewithT yassss! When do u start?
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK I start in January 😊
@@ReallifewithT is this ur first time in the medical field?
thanks so much for this video!
Amazing video! It's great to learn more about the CSFA since that is what I want to be after a tech. I didn't know you could get payed by hour or case, I always thought it was by contract, and also definitely didn't know about the groups and starting your own company. This is really cool stuff!
I'm currently in bio anatomy & physiology 2. My professor is really really good and he's also going to do a TEAS review later on this year to talk about what to expect in the teas and stuff ( he took it this year and took a bunch of notes) so next year I'm hopefully in the surgical tech program!
Yesss!!! You can be your own boss! She taught me that too! Imagine setting your own price lol.
Awesome bro! I'm excited for you! Hope to hear from you once you get to the program and start rolling. Goodluck!
I usually do the same but I take accountability for any mistakes I make, any mistakes the surgeon makes, I have no problem calling out, they usually like that
Of course you have to take accountability. But pick your battles. Always do it for the patient.
Have her back on to discuss pay
I am not in the field, just doing my research to see if Surgical Tech is something I might like to do. I'm hearing from multiple sources that Surgeons and nurses yell at and mistreat their techs. Why is this allowed in hospital culture? It seems so inappropriate and unfair. So nurses get yelled at too? I understand performing surgery on a person is a huge deal and the pressure must me insane but doesn't seem right to scream at another person doing their best?
That's healthcare for you! :) Can't be weak at this! Stay strong my friend!
When I was in school they told us that the in the OR they “eat their young”. It was so true. The OR is not for sensitive people. You have to have thick skin and not let it get to you.
@@RUclipsuser20225 yes they do eat the young lol I was the young. I was eaten alive. But that don't define me. I'm pretty strict but I make sense and I got your back 10000%. If u fail, I fail as a preceptor. It's a team effort forme
@Brickheelerstudios shit environment and is definitely a dead end job with no rewards
Hi. What is a surgical scrub? You mentioned in the very beginning of the video.
Absolutely amazing video! Thank you!
It would be great to know more info on how the clinicals work after the complication of the First Assistant Program.
I remember you mentioning in your previous videos that you wanted to become FA and then changed your mind because of difficulty to find a place for clinicals.
Would be very helpful to get more info about that!
To know how much FA make is great!
But if it’s almost impossible for some of us, if we are in state of Florida…
Hi I just came across your channel and wish I found you sooner because you’re excellent. One question could you go over a clean to dirty case? I feel they can get confusing. Thank you.
Lots of glove changing!!! When I do colon surgery I have atleast 4x pairs of gloves and I use my basin to separate clean and dirty.
I would love to work up and get to first assist one day!
Thank you for making this video
You should! Maybe one day you'd wanna be a PA! I recommend a PA!
Hi, i'm watching your video for the first time and it would be helpful to have gotten Ana's previous healthcare experience. Also, I'm watching your videos for the first time, can you explain all the abbreviations? This would be helpful if a person is new to this profession. Good video.
Great advice thank you.
great video
Amazing.! I’m moving to Orlando next month and I got hire as a CST. I’m a little scared but happy
Is there a way to get some more info from her? I want to know about owning the company.
Yay!!!!!!!! Is it HCA or public?
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK I made it to Orlando. I’m working for Orlando Health. But I’m interested in more FA information because I have my FA license. Does she have an Instagram or a way to contact her to have more information? ☺️
@@KillerBeeGus hey I'm not sure if she's comfy giving her info. She doesn't really mentor. So sorry
I loved this video!! I just moved to NY, I was a ST in Brazil for 16years, and here I cannat work yet. 🫤 To work in a hospital in NY I need to go school again and have a CST done and NBSTSA .. 😞 starting from scratch again.. but your videos are helping me a lot😍😍 you are amazing and I loved Ana too.
I love it.
PA, is a physician assistant I am assuming you are talking about, that is a masters degree and they can do a lot more than assist a surgeon, including full assessments, ordering tests and medications etc, not the same, and definitely not an equivalent to a surgical tech or surgical first assist.
Shes saying in terms of assisting, it's the same. But PAs does a lot more than scrub techs or csfas. What PAs and FAs do in surgery is the same in terms of scope. That's what she meant, sorry for the confusion. She did mention she has trouble explaining things before we started to film so I told her to be herself.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK OOh, sorry for the misuderstanding! Thank you to both of you, I appreciate your videos!
@@bettysmith4527 no worries!!! Thank you for clarifying it! 🙏
But how did she put her business out there working with those dr’s she worked with in the hospital?
Isn’t that a conflict of some sort? So only s.a’s are the only ones who can establish a business like hers?
Hey I'm into my last semester before internship. How do I get those flashcards and book you were showing your friend
From site at www.surgicaltechgeek.com
I had the same experience as a new tech. People legit thought i was super stupid
Hello Friend 😊 I have a question.. if A tech is receiving on the job training and is eligible for certification. How does one gain there AA in surgical Technology to move up the ladder within this field to maybe become a First Assistant? Thank you so much ! by way the great videos👍 Keep them coming very interesting ❤
So, I live one state north of you. I’m looking at a career change and doing ST and hopefully moving to SA after that. You’ve got a LOT of content on your channel. Can you just give me a point in the right direction so I can find a good ST program to get started?
Thank you!
Can a medical assistant be a surgical assistant or will it require more schooling?
Hi. Can you make a in depth video about your schooling experience? How much tuition was your program? Was it online? Do you have an associates? I can’t find anywhere that just has a certification program. They all include associates degrees 18 to 20 month programs
I actually recommend an associates though. I went to a private school about 32k but I had scholarships and paid it while in school so technically I only owed like 28k when I graduated. I still pay it today and I should be done in a year.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK Thank you for the info!
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK pls what private school was that and what was the duration of the program. Also where and how can we find certification programs? Private or state whichever one
I went to a state school for CST and I didn’t pay for school at all because the staff at the school really wanted to help their students. I went to Tennessee College of Applied Technology. A classmate went on for her CSTFA and she went to a community college just for that.
Great video! Need some advice..had my first interview and I didnt get the job. I get so nervous, because I really dont have the hands on experiece but have online experience because of Covid. Any advice?
Where did u do ur clinicals?
I am a RN circulator, how do I become a first assist RN?
I think you're better off becoming a RNPA.
Sorry for misspelling….
Lol
After completing..
I am currently a student in surgical tech but i’m also thinking about becoming a surgical assist! How much schooling is needed to go from surgical tech to surgical assist?
2 yrs surg tech associates and for assist is 1 yr.
What is the CST role during a rap?
A rap? Lol what's that
Rapid
Code blue.
So far, from my experience, I stay back and keep my field as sterile as possible. I stand back and a team will come.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK oh okay thanks! I’ve worked as a CNA/tech going on 6yrs now and we have teams who assist in the codes so sometimes if it’s my team I’d have to help with CPR so I was just wondering what that would look like for a CST.
Where can I get that hat you're wearing
Uniform advantage
Is it true that some states don’t recognize the role of CFA/surgical assistant? I will be moving to CA and very interested in entering a program to be a surgical tech first and work my way up to surgical assistant. I’ve been researching and I’m not sure if CA recognizes the role of CFA, and if they don’t, is there a role I can work my way up to that’s similar and not a PA? I have my bachelor’s in physiology and wanted to become a PA but decided not to. I’d appreciate your reply thank you so much!
Ur correct. Some states don't. I recommend going straight to PA but it'll be hard to get on surgical cases if no surgeons know u.
Do you have a direct email address because I want to ask you a question about the biogel eclipse latex surgical gloves
I'm sure others would love to know about your question! ❤️
Is possible to keep a full time 9-5 job while in STC?
That's tough
How long has she been a CSA?
10+ yeara
Does anybody have any experience in online program as surgical tech and did you find job opportunities right away?
I dont think u can do this program online. Maybe pre reqs but not clinicals.
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK thank you for your reply.
So basically this program (Medcerts) let me take the T-S certification. And in order to get full certification, I need to do 125 cases documented on job training/work within 2 years. Once I obtained 125 cases than a full national certification would be issued. This program seems very appealing because it's only a little over 5 months long online. But without actual clinical hours, I don't really know how the job opportunities will be like. 😤😭😥
@@SURGICALTECHGEEK hello there, I’m in the Military reserved, I want to take ST, there is an online class at start and how long is the clinical? Months? Thank you
