Thank you for sharing this. 🧡 I'm glad that awareness is being raised about this kind of horror and that honor is being shown to indigenous people. Every child matters. 🧡🧡

My Great Uncle died at the age of four at the mohawk institute in Brantford. He fell out of the second story window. I've know since a small child. Education on residential schooling is so important. It breaks my heart to hear their stories. I've ordered my orange shirt from SheNative which half of the proceeds go to survivors and other half to orange shirt day.

I love videos like this! I want to know how to help and make a positive impact even when I’m not native. I’m from the United States and they also don’t teach about the history of indigenous people. Education and recognition are so important and I would have never known any of this information without helpful people like you :)

Again, another super awsome video. I was asked about "every child matters" almost everyday. Orange is my favorite color so i wear Orange often. I did not know what they were talking about? Now i do, so when some one ask me about my Orange shirt. I can tell them about every child matters now and can say i support this movement. Thanks again.

I learned about this in highschool. We had a lot of open conversations about residential schools, but mostly focused on the ones in the U.S. like Carlisle, and looked at first hand accounts of the poor kids who were forced to go to these schools and how lost they felt. My history teachers didn't leave out the bad stuff. In fact, they made a point to talk about it in all the aspects of U.S. history, and I'm beyond grateful to have been educated in this manner, unlike most schools in America.

@@MalloryRoseCo it makes me so happy because now I realize how many other schools just refused to tell the truth. We even talked about how some colonizers purposely gave Native Americans blankets from those who had small pox in an attempt to wipe them out! It just boggles my mind that people generally don't know some of this information because it wasn't taught in the schools curriculum. There were points our teachers went into these topics even when it wasn't a part of the curriculum. I just got lucky and had some good teachers who actually cared about history, the good, the bad, and everything in between.

There was an added fire in Mallory in this video and I love seeing a little less sunshine and rainbows and a little more... Vinegar added to her delivery. And it's rightly justified! Thank you for addressing and expanding my knowledge on this topic. The reformation schools existed everywhere and so many people forget, and there being news coverage regarding the unearthed atrocities recently in the news, it's so important to remind us all that erasure exists in very modern times. And while it has been recent, there's still time to learn how to never be this cruel again.

🧡 Greetings from Pennsylvania, where we had the Carlisle School. You are doing good work. 🧡
I look most like my mother's side, which was a poor, white, rural Texas family. Dad was brown, but emphasized his Portuguese patrilineal history. I grew up not knowing that my Grandmother Ruth was born on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Reservation. There are so many ways that cultural identity is erased or suppressed. 🧡 I will share this on Pinterest.

I didn't learn about it in school. The first time I had heard about residential "schools" was in a documentary/news show about a young First Nation's boy Chaney Wenjack. I was really little so I didn't quite understand what I was seeing. I just remember feeling really sad and uneasy. The next time I heard about it was in a film produced by CBC in 1989 called "Where the Spirit Lives". It was one of the most heartbreaking, disturbing films I had seen in a long time. I recommend it, though.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm in my thirties now and when I was in high school, bout twenty years ago in my teens. There were tons of native kids just enjoying themselves and they had absolute representation of their culture and even a class for natives to speak their native languages and learn about their culture, and guess what, you weren't allowed to join said class if you're not Native American. Technology and civilization have evolved enough that this whole ideology of constantly reminding people about past horrors is nothing more than reinforcing victim mentality and that people of today who share the same skin color should somehow feel embarrassed or ashamed of someone else's wrong doings.
And yet if you looked through native american history, how many children of other tribes have been horribly and brutally killed, raped and sold for goods into slavery for other tribes. Where is their colored shirt and Remembrance Day? No? Then maybe we should move on from the past and look how much we have grown as a nation of multi cultures coming together. Just a thought.
