Over the past week, students at dozens of universities held demonstrations, set up encampments and, at times, seized academic buildings. In response, administrators at many of those colleges decided to crack down and called in the local police to detain and arrest demonstrators.
As of Thursday, the police had arrested 2,000 people across more than 40 campuses, a situation so startling that President Biden could no longer ignore it.
Jonathan Wolfe, who has been covering the student protests for The Times, and Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent, discuss the history-making week.
Guest:
• Jonathan Wolfe (www.nytimes.com/by/jonathan-w...) , a senior staff editor on the newsletters team at The New York Times.
• Peter Baker (www.nytimes.com/by/peter-baker) , the chief White House correspondent for The New York Times covering President Biden and his administration.
Background reading:
• As crews cleared the remnants of an encampment at U.C.L.A., students and faculty members wondered how the university could have handled protests over the war in Gaza so badly (www.nytimes.com/2024/05/02/us...) .
• Biden denounced violence on campus (www.nytimes.com/2024/05/02/us...) , breaking his silence after a rash of arrests.

The biased opinions in this pod cast are so over the top that it was hard to listen to the entire conversation.
I had exactly the same response.
The format of this show is pretty effective. The reporter tells us the “facts”. The music and the host tell us how to feel about the story. By separating the reporter from the response, it makes him seem more credible. The soundtrack is so subtle, a lot of listeners probably aren’t even aware of it. The hosts generally hit just the right note of concern. On a production level, this is one of the best liberal propaganda channels going.
Agreed. The protestors "confronted" i.e. attacked
Totally agree. Notice how they portray the counter protesters as starting everything never mind the fact that the anti-Israel activists has been screaming, violent, antisemitic slogans for the last 6 months, intimidating Jewish students, and now committing felonies. NY Times has turned into a Leftist propaganda mouthpiece. Their characterizations are so skewed they can no longer be called a newspaper. I recommend every subscribe to The Free Press. It is such a relief to hear actual discussions where contrary opinions are respectfully debated.
@@npgibson69 Like how there's a brief mention of the Pro-Israel group being the aggressors against the Pro-Palestine group but then somehow they quickly become "the counter protestors" which could be very confusing to someone not listening very closely.
There is a visceral reaction to the ongoing genocide, that's all. You can't assuage that with police. You must respond with empathy for dead mothers and their children.
"Looked like a warzone?" Really? You haven't seen any pictures from Ukraine or Gaza, have you?
Very few details when students are being attacked by a pack of thugs but we get a play by play when the police attack and the students resist.
Wait you thought you were going to get the truth from The Daily?
@@mmagaa91 I didn't, but it doesn't hurt to point out bias, propaganda, and ( in my opinion) racism of the NYT.
I was glad they mentioned it near the beginning. I had seen barely any reporting of it except for local news and Al Jazeera but I have since seen more national/international reporting, eg the BBC had a local San Diego reporter cover it well even though the BBC host seemed to be trying to gloss over it. I would like to see more details reported about who was among the counter protestors. There is clear footage of known neonazi agitators at the protest, such as Narek Palyan who has been involved in numerous violent counter protests against the LGBTQ community and has been open about his antisemitic views but seems to be accepted by at least some in the pro Israel protest camp (this hypocrisy alone makes it news worthy).
If Joe doesn't like "chaos", maybe he shouldn't have helped create it in Gaza. If he says he believes in the "law", maybe he shouldn't be violating international law by abetting crimes against humanity.
And your view on Hamas/hezbollah/Iran?
@@MrDellasc Terrorists come in all shapes & sizes.
@@alyxcoe2608well said. Being against the death and destruction in Gaza by an American ally with American weapons does not mean support for bad actors who's own hands are dripping in blood.
@@MrDellascyou have a Celtic Football club logo as your profile? There's a very strong historical link between local Celtic Football fans and the Palestinian movement.
Who were the counter protestors exactly? Some pro-Palestinian students have publically claimed Proud Boys and others similar were involved.
The counter protesters were the Pro-Israeli group. You can go back and catch it when you re-listen to the podcast, but it seems to be intentionally misleading/confusing. I'm sure the NYT isn't allowed to expicitly say that the Pro-Israel group were the ones being violent and the reason the cops had to get involved.
Why the hell are people building barricades and deciding who gets in and out of a public university campus?
I think Biden's response to this solidified me staying home in November.
Free Palestine.
💯%🇵🇸🇺🇲😘
Free Judea.
They have identified ppl just on the lawn witnessing democracy from Jan 6th.
We need to send Palestine a list of THESE recruits... they will be needing fighters.
Where is the go fund me to help with airfare?
Ask Jerry Seinfeld for the money ya goof
Yeah ask Seinfeld dunce
The universities can regulate time, place, and manner of protests. Protesters should consider if the goal is to help Palestinians or be dramatic. Right now, the main impact of the protests is to help Trump.
I recently toured a synagogue in the Cleveland area. They had an armed guard to protect their preschool children from threats.
Nothing to do with Trump. Stop spreading misinformation.
That armed guard is necessary because of right wing extremists. Terror attacks on the Jewish community come from neonazis, not pro Palestinian leftists.

The victimhood is hilarious.. apparently 2024 is the year of victimhood!
Play dumb games, win dumb prizes.
The ironic thing is that even the pro-israelis are competing to be victims, we have republicans talking about how "words are violence" and similar liberal shit.
Netanyahu’s victimhood is so perverse he’s rendered “antisemitism” almost meaningless.. especially when you consider that Palestinians are Semites too.
have you been asleep for the last decade?
everybody’s proclaimed themselves a victim of one thing or other for the last 10 years, at least.
yeah, thats how the game is played. Even Republicans throw down the victim card when they talk about globalists and the great replacement.
