It was revealed in an interview with Director Neil Marshall that the creatures in the film, "Crawlers" are descendants of humans or neaderthals that got trapped in the cave system 10,000 years ago, where they resorted to cannibalism in order to stay alive for centuries, and that they mutated or evolved into a new species, as well having the ability to hunt by echolocation.
Well, definitely not Neanderthals. They existed as a species only in Europe and Asia. However, they bred with humans - but went extinct 40,000 years ago. Some human paleo-Asian humans, however, did have Neanderthal ancestry, but were more human. Along with human paleo-Asians, some of those paleo-Asians humans with Neanderthal ancestry DID make it to the Americas to become paleo-Native Americans. Modern Natives only have about 1-2% Neanderthal DNA, so even 10,500 years ago when they reached that side of the modern United States, their Neanderthal DNA was still relatively low.
Was it said that they hunt with echolocation? Because it doesn't seem like this for me. It's just when one of your senses becomes useless in such an environment your body will enhance another.

So then the location of the film's FICTIONAL setting would be where the history is from.

I feel like it’s one of the first horror movies I was super into when it was initially released, because I was fourteenish and could finally appreciate them lol. It does a great job of building the characters as well as the set - all of which was made of simple plaster/plastic if I remember correctly, and they used the same pieces, continuously shifting them around, to create the various cave structures
You've not seen other version of this movie with devastated ending when Sarah wakes up back in that cave after seeing Juno in the car.Then she realizes that her escape was just hallucination of her postraumatic brain. Imagine seeing this movie in the theatres, it was insane. Everyone was screaming and curled up in their seats. You should check out the alternate ending.
Dang, I would take a look at the alternate ending. It's annoying that they thought that the US audience couldn't handle the original UK ending, but literally, everyone agrees it is lightyears better than this one. I still love the movie though, it just saddens me to see people watch that ending over the good one. Spoiler for those who haven't seen the film: I can't stand her leaving Juno to die. I understand her frustrations with her, of course! But that was another person you could have used to help you fight to escape. If you're that mad you can do that after you see the exit. But to do it at that moment was not the brightest idea, in my opinion.

@Da420KinG I didn't care about the cast members in part 2 whereas i was totally invested in the girls in this. The same intensity was missing as was a lot of the claustrophobic atmosphere. As for the ending.....oh dear ☹️
Man I remember watching this in theater when all of a sudden it got so dark when they reach the cave! Shit got real after that, great movie ever made.I rate this movie a 10/10 perfectly well made.
This one hits my biggest fear... cramped spaces. There are cases of spelunkers dying all the time from it, getting caught up in those really tight spaces and unable to get out. For some reason, some of them go alone. Are they morons? Nutjobs? Who in their right mind would voluntarily risk that?

The original ending was MUCH better. After seeing Juno in the car she wakes up in the cave. She had passed out when she fell at the end of it. Then the movie ends with her staring at her torch until the light goes out and you hear crawlers implying she dies too.
I don't understand how all of them dying makes the movie much better. As a senior I will never understand why the worst characters and worst endings appeal to most people. I prefer a happy ending sometimes.
@@sheilaburns8977 it’s less about the ending being happy and more about just the theme and tone of the movie. The weird “ghost” Juno being in the car was just weird and a lazy jump scare. If she had escaped and just gotten away that would have been fine.
I think the US version of this movie has a different ending than the UK version. Here she escaped the cave and drove off, I remember only seeing the UK ending, where she was still trapped inside the cave, having visions of her daughter with the birthday cake as the things come closer.
This is the USA version. The European version has an alternate ending where Sarah didn't make it out but woke up still lying on the ground with the vampiric creatures crawling towards her.
The other ending in my opinion is much more chilling, it’s the same as this one but there’s one more scene. I guess they went with this one since they made a part 2
I actually heard part two continues off the UK ending, as that was the intended ending to the story but got changed for us audiences for some reason. Haven't actually seen part two tho so I'm not sure. But as much as I'm a sucker for a happy ending I do prefer the UK version

Love this movie so much and you should see the second one as well by the way They are Australian like in the movie Talk to me haha but ya hard to tell at times I will admit. The version you saw was the American one and it has the open ending where she sees Juno in the car with her which shows how guilty she feels and that leads to the second one in a way but the original one was so much darker and slightly upsetting as well. I won't tell you why in case you find it some how. Glad you watched this one guys and the first time the girls see the creatures was a real reaction cause until then they had not seen what the creatures looked like or the actors in the costume and makeup either cause the director kept all that away from them to get a real reaction when the time came. The only actress i know here is the one that plays Juno which is interesting really. Glad you enjoyed it though.

Anyways the descent 2 fked up the entire 1st movie brilliance with its ending so it doesn't matter that much. If you wanna watch part 2 1st watch the full ending version of this movie it's a small addition & remember to turn off part 2 before the ending 😂. Otherwise the part 2 is good. 😂
I really like this movie. Initially it was a male and female cast until they decided to make them all female. They did this because there weren’t many horror movies with an all female cast. This was brilliant because all the females they casted were so different in character and had their own personalities. Especially compared to these recent “it girls” that theyve been producing lately🙄
Everyone died. It what way did she save lives? She's a sociopathic bitch (literally she matches most of the traits of a clinical sociopath) and crippling her was soooo cathartic.

The implication is that they are a species of human that evolved to live underground. It kind of reminds me of, The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells.

This was the happy American ending. The original UK ending is darker. And not the second one is awful. It's basically made for SyFy channel.
