Thanks! I have never done an axel replacement, just finished the job in 2 hours thanks to your great video. I was quoted $260 labour. I should really send you a 12pack.
Man you save my life. While doing my new struts, I notice my CV axle was leaking. Never have I thought this process was so easy. Just pop it loose. So bless. Happy very late Thanksgiving. Thanks giving as in showing the video. Two handed High-five👐
Heads up! If you have a hybrid with a CVT, you will lose a quart of Toyota ATF WS fluid from your CVT when you take your CV axle out. So either place a pan underneath to collect it, it will pour out. Or, drain your CVT first. Then repace your CV axle. Remembering to fill your CVT fluid after. Another thing to take note of is that the Hybrid CV axle is much beefier than the standard Highlander CV axle. So make sure your auto part store gave you the right one!
Great video Joe Daddy. My 2004 Highlander has 185,000 miles on it and although the CV joints have never been replaced I'm sure that'll be a job I'll be doing in the next year or two. This video gave me some valuable insight into the job. It appears to be an easy fairly straightforward job. I probably would do both sides instead of just one when the time comes. Sounds fairly inexpensive if you can do it yourself. Thanks!
I use Rockauto myself. Most of the time lowest price with shipping and very fast getting the parts to my door. Thank you for sharing. Happy late Thanksgiving.
First off, thank you for the video. I am about to do this to my 2005 highlander that I use as a mail truck, so it was nice to see the video. Second off, I have to laugh about it being done "the day before Thanksgiving" as my cv axle went out on a mail route THE DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING! Lol. Here I am Thanksgiving morning after verifying it was the issue. Lol
Great info and video!! Sir I have a 2013 Highlander that is shaking simian in the front at certain speeds. Feels like it’s a wobble. Would the CV axle cause any of that? Thanks
Really a good video. Well filmed and narrated, clear and concise. Only question is whether or not hiiting the axle with a mallet to set the retaining ring will damage anything. Thank you
I would make some mark before removing the two big bolts from the struct and put it back to the original spot. That way it save a couple hundred bucks for alignment.
Thanks for this video. Is the procedure essentially the same for the rear cv axle? I also bought a new ABS sensor and hub/bearing, since the car as 180k mi and it doesn't seem like much more work while it is apart.
When I've done both front axles on my 2003 Highlander 4wd 3.0L, I just unbolt the 2 nuts and one bolt where the ball joint mounts to the control arm, didn't have to remove calipers or rotor or strut.bolts and remove axle nut pull knuckle assembly outward and axle splines.come right out.
Great Video! Thank you! I figured I would have to drain the fluid out of the trans to do this; but it doesn't look like you had to! I will jack up just the driver's side of the car, just like you did. (If you did drain the trans and I missed that, then I'll just get a surprise, haha)
Toyota axle is better than that one. If it wasn't clunking I would have just got a new boot kit and replace the boots. How did that axle hold up since this was so long ago?
I have a 02 Highlander, Front wheel drive/2WD. I get vibration around 45 when on the gas. Stops when I let off. Is that a CV Joint? I get some play with the drivers side wheel when shaking it..
Likely a wheel bearing. Jack it up and grab tire at top and bottom. Try to pivot in and out. It should not wiggle at all. I demonstrated this on a recent Dodge Durango video.
I'm curious if there is any slop in the spindle to strut area - I've had cars that allow a bit here for alignment. I'm curious because it might be good to make some witness marks to make sure the alignment isn't off upon re-assembly. Also, I was considering replacing just a boot, but if the whole axle is around $50, I should probably just replace the whole assembly. Car has 244K, owned since new - nearly zero trouble.
I had the same question, Cardone tech support told me it was added @ the factory because the shafts weren’t balanced when built. The screwdriver prying method does work but don’t push up too far or you’ll go through the outer edge of the diff seal
I just called Toyota parts for a quote, and they wanted $670 driver side, and $770 for the passenger side for a total of $1400. why online charge less than $200 for both front CV Axle??? please advice. I have a 2006 Highlander.
Dealers go by an hourly rate established by them. If they do everything exactly by the book, they may say it takes 4 hours plus parts. They charge a lot of money per hour.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2004 slight click sensation in steering wheel and vibration on highway after 65mph. Does this sound like CV? I m going to jack it up this weekend to actually examine
Hows that axel holding up? Like a lot of other people, I'm on a limited budget bc of covid19. My HL is in need of a new axel and I was looking at the cheaper axels on rockauto.
Great video. Curious how long the entire job took? (so I can compare to the quote I received from local dealer). Also, you make it look pretty easy and straighforward, which has tempted this novice to buy the parts and take this on myself. Is this due to the magic of editing or is CV axle replacement something best left to professionals? Thank you!
Well I have been doing mechanical work for close to 40 years.... I think it took me about 1-1.5 hours to do. It's not that hard, but having the tools makes all the difference.
Ia this for a front wheel drive or all wheel drive? Im having the same problem makinh nosises when i turn the steering wheel coming from the driver side.
Yes, driver side was replaced. Used a duralast part, not sure if that has something to do with it. Also replaced the seal. Thinking maybe we pushed the seal in to far?
02 Sienna, not sure if my driver side is bad? I have about 2 MM of play when pulling or pushing rod from Trans to hub. boots are intact and no signs of leaking at Trans or boots. I have play in wheel and it is this 2 MM movement. is this normal? no clicking but a clunking intermittently while wheel is turned left and going up a curb. checked all other suspension components. Definitely a small bit of play in wheel.
There is normally some play from all the components. 2mm sounds pretty small. Is there play in a vertical motion? Like if the vehicle is jacked up and you grab the tire at the top and bottom and pull/push opposite motion. There should be no play at all. This would indicate a failing wheel bearing.
Jo Daddy's Garage I do have play at 9 and 3 o'clock and it is this axle shaft moving. I did buy new press in Timken bearings and new Moog bushings for the control arms. Yet to install. Bearings and bushings are original. Thanks. will replace my new parts in hand before moving to shaft.
Is that a "damper" in the middle of the original ? And , is it missing on the new replacement? My understanding is that the shock to the drive train from on and off the throttle is damaging and requires a damper .
Yet another fine "how to" video from the Jo Daddy studios located in sunny Ga. Thanks for taking the time to explain the procedure , it was well presented. How ever, what is the torque setting on the axle nut?
+Bill Stevenson That's a good question that needs to be addressed. I've always used "german torque".. (Gut-en-tight). I did some research, and here is a handy guide: www.skf.com/binary/79-66360/457377.pdf

Thank you for making the video. I have to inspect mine and see if they need replacing. I have a rupture in the one of the main control arm bushing. Do you have any videos for replacement ? Much appreciated.
Thanks, I appreciate all the info! I am working my way up to an impact! I got a cut in the cv boot when i was replacing the lower control arms, and slowly over time the grease has spun out. LCA's are a nightmare on these. You have to undue all of the engine mounts to get enough clearance to replace the engine mounts and to put the new LCA's in. Great video, I feel more confident in getting the job done!
I have a question for you.. I'm working on a 66 mustang how do you know specific measurements from point to point??? Is there a book that gives factory points??? Web site?? please and thank you..

If you're referring to the mount bolts, they are pretty tight.
After replacing our axle. The tire wobble at 40pmh??? Do you know why?
Sounds like something isn't tight. Axle won't cause that.
What purpose does the rubber "coupler" on the old shaft, seen at 52 seconds, serve? The replacement shaft did not have this rubber piece.
Good question. It may have been a simple vibration dampener. It added nothing structural to the shaft.
