I cannot remember who said it but there is a famous quote and I know I’m paraphrasing but it’s along the lines of “that which you cannot criticize is what controls you”. So if Britney isn’t allowed to speak up about the conservatorship that was done absolutely for a reason. The same goes for a job where you have to sign “happiness contracts” stating that you’ll never say anything bad about the business and they’ll sue you or fire you if you do, or oppressive governments where people are not allowed to speak out, or demonstrate against those in power for fear of violence. They have her voice under lock and key for a reason.

Also, her appointed lawyer, Sam Ingham, whom she cannot fire, has a lawsuit against him for conspiring to kill US radio legend Casey Kasem for financial gain. According to Billboard, he showed up at the Kasem's house with an armed guard to force Kasem, who was in his eighties and living with dementia, into a conservatorship. His wife vehemently protested his being taken away (and they call her crazy, of course), but less than a month later when Kasem's daughter was able to visit him, his health had declined so rapidly that he was close to death. His widow filed the lawsuit accusing Ingham of conspiring with his older children to isolate him so he would die for their financial gain. Ingham made large amounts of money off of the family in legal fees. This is the person who was chosen as Britney's lawyer. He's never going to let her go willingly

The baby on her lap situation was when Britney was leaving a shopping centre, with no security. Her car was surrounded by paparazzi and she was alone with her baby. She fleed the situation by holding her baby on her lap. It’s not as if she was out for a leisurely cruise. She was harassed by dozens of men surrounding her with cameras. She had to act quickly for the safety and well-being of herself and her child. That’s important to include when reciting the incident.
Also her uncle shared this story about Britney's father being drunk and deciding to drive his car with 4 year old Britney on it, her uncle had to fight Jamie to stop him while baby Britney screamed and cried. Britney's sister let her daughter drive a ATV which almost resulted in her death and nobody questioned Britney's father or her sister. It's infuriating.
Same with the incident where she was lambasted for "almost dropping" her baby. Yeah, she almost dropped the baby while literally fleeing a mob of paparazzi, who then sold the footage of it to tabloids who turned it into 'Britney is a terrible mother' rather than 'our photographers almost injured an infant due to their harrassing its mother.

It's more likely she had memory issues rather than alzheimer's from either mental illness or possibly a B12 deficiency, which mimics alzheimer's to the point doctors misdiagnose low B12 as alzheimer's

@@jwb52z9 Which is ironic because any odd behaviour, pain, etc in young healthy looking women and teenage girls in the UK is typically treated with a round of deficiency blood tests (Iron, B12, vitamin D) followed by supplements and/or a hormonal contraceptive. You need to clearly have a proposed condition in order to get a real diagnosis or even move towards one first time.

I have some distant relatives who are using their disabled grandpa with brain damage to get his money for stuff and he is usually left hungry and unwashed. Since he has brain damage (I think it's from stroke but I totally forgot) he personally has a thing that he fixates on and that's traveling from town to town and they leave him unmonitored and once he was missing for 2-3 days and they found him on the road, almost dead from freezing. I'm so disgusted by ableism in my country....
I'm 38, just like Britney, and my son was taken from me because of my then undiagnosed autism. I've been trying to get him back for 9 years now, but the diagnosis which was supposed to (and did to an extent) help me get better is now standing between me and my child. Anything I say in my defense can be waved away with "oh she doesn't know what she's saying, poor dear". This is disregarding how I'm pretty much single-handedly taking care of my mother who is sick with cancer, how I have always handled myself in every single other aspect of life, and how my son cries with grief every single time I'm forced to send him back to his carers after his home visits. So. Free Britney. And give all of us a more hopeful future.

I've always found it sketchy the men who live off her money can tell the court she's not capable of taking care of her own money. Seems like a conflict of interest at the very least.

I'm autistic, dyslexic and have PTSD/depression: I don't drive because people seem to resist the idea of driving properly. So I just use public transportation.
My brother has an acquired brain injury and isn't able to wash his hands without help, is under our mothers guardianship, and he still has his basic human rights, because mum listens to him and considers what he wants as a priority. Britney is not respected by her so called father at all, it makes me so angry.
This sounds dangerously like ownership over a person. Being able to say who they see, what happens with their money, their time, their property, ect, is wholly ownership. Britney, or anyone, shouldn't be punished as such for poor mental health- especially when that mental health is made poor because of this messed up system we live in.

The fact that Britney's father is able to get away with this even under scrutiny and backlash, is genuinely scary for all disabled people living in the US, and just for all people in general.
What I don't understand is that under a conservatorship her Dad can actually take a salary. This should be ABSOLUTELY illegal. It puts any person in danger of being exploited. All the proceeds that she earns should be put into a trust for her and all proceeds should be used for her medical care. The person in control of her assets should not make a dime of her. This rings of how in the past husbands could have their wives committed to steal their inheritance.
Yeah that confuses me too. I can understand a conservator being in charge of the person's finances. I can understand the conservator perhaps being reimbursed by the government or someone if they need to give full time care and thus can't bring in enough income to support themselves and the person they are caring for. But how on earth is it legal to draw an income from someone whose finances you have complete legal control over? And then get to dictate how much your income should be on top of that? It seems like a pretty serious flaw in the system.
Or in the instance where a salary is needed (since I’d imagine there are genuine conservatorships where caring for that person is basically a full time job) it has to be a regulated, established rate that can only be adjusted using legal pathways, proving that its necessary due to a, b, or c reason. Getting to establish your own salary, give yourself raises, etc is out of the question and unacceptable.
fun fact: often it was sons who were committed in order to get inheritance. Women too, but men with money and instability were a target too. There’s some great books about aslyum history out there worth reading.

My dad was more sick than she currently is and has more rights. My mom is in charge of a lot of things for him but he still has a lot of autonomy. Passing out in the middle of the store and being in a fog 24/7 for 8 years and still has more rights than Britney.

My grandmother has dementia to such a degree that she sometimes doesn't even recognise her own daughters and she has a lot more liberty and rights than Britney Spears.
My uncle has a severe mental disability, making his ability to make desisions comparable with a todler. Nothing wrong with that, he is a great person and very happy with his life. He also is under guardianship, but he still has the right to vote..
I'm just gonna explain this since I spoke to my dad about this today: the guardianships where the person still has rights it's because the guardianship is done out of a place of love, respect, and concern. In the case of Britney it was most likely done out of a place of wanting power, money, or both.
Clearly this is comparable to someone with depression being punished for a suicide attempt. You never, ever, EVER punish someone for having a mental illness or disability.

Yeah, if she has dementia, I want to know what super drug they've got her on because she's doing better than any other patient on the planet. I have known people with early onset dementia - they can go from still being able to hold a coherent conversation, and needing some supervision but not 24/7 care, to not being able to walk, being aggressive, unmanageable and needing round the clock watching in a matter of years, sometimes less. And while my grandmother wasn't early onset, she went from 'confused' to 'danger to herself' in a year or two. It's been what? 20 years? And Britney's performing, interviewing, coherent. At this point that's not even 'slow going' dementia, that's 'miracle cure'.

In Denmark, people with a mental diagnosis can not be officially 'cured / healthy', and struggle to: adopt a child, become a pilot, fireman, police officer, sailor, or au-pair. People literally loose rights if they choose to seek help and get diagnosed.
If she does have "early onset dementia" she shouldn't have been "allowed" to go on tour or release albums. She should have carers and rights that every other human being should have.
Early onset dementia happens in your 50s or 60s. That is "early" compared to regular dementia where onset is more like at 80. "Early" doesn't mean onset is at any age lmfao so tired of seeing people throw this diagnosis around.

Many US states will let a 15 year-old drive on their own with nothing more than a written exam and a 1-hour driving lesson. Even if Britney hasn't driven in 12 years, she could take driving lessons, maybe even take her driving license again. Teenagers haven't driven EVER and they are still trusted behind a wheel.
It shouldn’t matter if she can drive or not ..she has money and can hire transportation and even if she didn’t have loads of money there are other ways she could get around. my grandfather is blind and for many years would leave the house and go into town by cab everyday by himself it wasn’t until he was put on oxygen and that he needed someone to go with him.

God I do not envy Britney at all. Regardless of what her mental health is like at a baseline, going through the things she did would take a massive toll on anybody. One of my worst fears is losing agency and control over my own decisions, so my heart absolutely goes out to her. I genuinely feel bad for Britney I went through a similar thing where I had a major breakdown where I was unable to look after myself temporarily. I had spent all my money, owed the bank money, was dangerous to myself, etc. My parents took control of my bank and other elements of my life BUT the difference to what's going on with Britney is that my parents steadily gave me control back as I got better. When I was in recovery they started by allowing me to manage my own food, then going out, steadily increasing my allowance until I had complete control over my bank again. That's how the system is meant to work but it's true that far too many times that it's easy for people to corrupt for their own gain. I was really lucky my parents wanted the best for me and to support me to get better. But I genuinely worry for others who are now in a more stable place but can't get control of their lives back because of legal loopholes.
I feel like conservatorship would exacerbate a mental health problem, not ease it. Like, you want to put person with mental health problems even more on edge? Take away their freedoms.

Given that disabled people are 2-4 times more likely to be abused, and a disturbing amount of that is from family or guardians, the thought that abusers can literally set it up so that it's illegal for the victim to escape them in any way is so deeply terrifying.
As someone who has experienced psychosis first hand, Britney's story and struggle is one that has always struck me to my core. The notion that a family member could just decide to remove my autonomy and exploit poor mental health laws is terrifying. Especially since they're the reason I am so fucked up to begin with! The point on this: yeah we should be looking to doctors to make this judgement, and review them, and get second opinions. But we rely on judges with legal experience but nothing else. This is a huge problem in the states. I don't know about anywhere else. But we don't rely on the right people
@@seaborgium919 thing is, she got very convenient diagnose of dementia, which is degenerative (gets worse) and non-reversible. A transitory psychotic episode for example might have required periodic assessment. Dementia is definitive. But the system should have never allowed that to happen on the first place, there should be many evaluations across years. I'm afraid yes, sounds like it's corrupt and can be used to some people's benefit.
Under HIPAA laws, a doctor isn't legally allowed to discuss someone's medical history, without express consent given by the person being treated.And Britney isn't allowed to consent to anything without her FATHER'S consent, which if she isn't actually unstable, he obviously wouldn't give. And even a doctor he tries to pay off would likely not accept, as it would mean losing his license to practice and possible jail time if it ever came out that Britney HAD NOT consented to that doctor speaking to her medical history. Basically- Britney's Real Doctor: Get's permission from Britney to speak on her medical history. Father denies this permission and forbids the doctor from speaking. If the Doctor speaks out, they are in violation of HIPAA law, as the Father didn't consent to the information being revealed, Doctor loses his license and gets arrested. Fake Doctor: Gets paid by Father to lie about Britney's mental state and abilities. Britney herself never consents to this doctor speaking about her medical history. Even though the father gave his consent- his consent is only permission for BRITNEY HERSELF to consent. He cannot consent to releasing her medical history on her behalf. If Britney reveals she did not consent to the medical information being released, Doctor is in violation of HIPAA, etc etc, can no longer practice medicine. HIPAA is taken VERY seriously- peoples medical histories are one of the most protected things about them in the US. Basically the most any other doctor could do would be speculate from the outside about Britney's stability and ability to function. The moment they actually speak to her and ask her any questions about her mental health, that conversation is protected by HIPAA.

I feel that there's also a gender issue here. Many (MANY) male artists have had huge breakdowns and they weren't treated like children because of that. But, of course, women must always behave properly, lest they be considered 'crazy' or 'unstable' (sorry for using these words). P.S. Of course this is a complex issue, but I felt that gender may also be a factor taking part in it. By no means do I think being 'unstable' is inherently bad, nor do I believe the only reason for this is Britney being a woman.
My cousin, who is a 23 year old man, is severely mentally disabled and there is not much he can do for himself outside of what a toddler is capable of. His mother is his caretaker and makes all important decisions for him but he still, somehow, has more rights than a 30 year old woman who is fully capable of making her own choices! My cousin doesn't even need a conservatorship, I don't think anyone does, honestly.
I'm not a guardian, but I work at a group home for people with neuropsychiatric and developmental disabilities, and my job is to communicate with their guardians about their economy, dentist appointments, hair dresser appointments, doctors appointments, medicine etc. My job is to do all that - and more - so that our klients can live a happy and fulfilling life and be as indepentent as possible. Denying someone their basic human rights and locking them away for months, just for buying a hamburger, ain't it.

I'm a big criticism of guardianship, but why on earth would there be a national registry for something that's largely decided based on a person's health status in some way? That's incredibly invasive.

Allowing a person that level of control over another person is something that requires intense monitoring by a third party (and even a fourth party) to prevent abuse.
Britney's situation breaks my heart.she is so abused just because of mental health problems that just need assistance not this total removal of her rights as a person. It also terrifies me,that here we have a huge public figure treated like this, so what chance do any other people have. The system is so badly stacked against people with disabilities and mental health problems. Especially mental health seems to remove your basic rights potentially forever.
This does not surprise me in the slightest. In a country that legalised slavery the fact that you can legally make someone sub-human is not at all shocking. And yes, all prisoners are legally considered slaves.

I’m horrified and furious about this situation. If she’s able to earn millions every year, she’s capable of paying a good accountant to manage it and spending it as she damn well chooses. She’s been held captive and exploited in plain sight for so long now.
If I was judged based solely on my worst meltdown I'd come out looking pretty bad. At one point after going through periods of heavy disassociation and anxiety attacks basically any time I left my house I thought it would be a good choice to set my hair on fire ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ luckily I did not, but my fiance had to talk me out from under the kitchen table where I was hunkered down convinced my childhood abuser had somehow tracked me down. Two years later and I haven't had an episode in like a year and a half and I went through group therapy and am with a therapist I like a lot. If I was to be judged on the whole of these last two years that breakdown, while awful, was only one part of my life and the progress I've made since then. I think Britney has been used as a cash-cow by her father since she was a child and that man will do anything possible to keep her from having autonomy over her life.
Ouch. I'm a middle aged man with power of attorney for my mother. I try hard to make the best decisions I can on her behalf. I have once had to make a decision against her will but it was to ensure her safety and well being. I hope I never have to do that again. While technically I am allowed to charge for my services in my opinion that's just not something you do to a family member.
As an attorney in the states, I just wanted to say in most states a conservatorship deals with the financial assets of a person and a guardianship deals with the person. Although a conservatorship can be extremely limiting as it robs the person of financial resources, it cannot force unwanted medical care or imprisonment on a person the way a guardianship has the power to do. A conservator can financially blackmail a person in unwanted situations. Often time a conservatorship is much easier to obtain. In my practice I have seen some real abuses of the conservatorship law. Rebekah Squires Yes you can file for both at the same time. That is often what happens which makes separating the two harder. The Court can even choose to grant one and not the other. Usually a conservatorship is granted rather than guardianship as burden of proof is lower. I had a case were the person demonstrated a lack of ability to understand math and the running of the rental properties her deceased husband left her, but she was still taking care of her personal self and therefore a conservatorship was granted but a guardianship was denied. A power of attorney can be a great tool as it can be narrowly tailored to the needs of the person. Generally a guardianship will void any power of attorney dealing with medical or personal matters and a conservatorship will void any power of attorney having to do with fiscal matters. Neither will void a will made before being declared incompetent. In my state, a person holding a power of attorney is given precedence under the law when the court appoints a guardian or conservator. Also in my state, the alleged incapacitated person must be represented by an independent attorney paid by the state before anything can happen. Each state has different rules.

Elena, #1 Bernie Bro I don’t practice in California. Everything I am about to say is generally applicable, but each state is free to make laws contradicting. Both conservatorships and guardianships are limits on your fundamental rights. It is well established that if there is a compelling state interest the government can abridge your freedoms. The normal example is yelling fire in a theater is illegal. Generally conservatorship and guardianships are sealed proceedings. Meaning no one can access the file or discuss details of the case outside the court unless ordered by the court or necessary for the progression of the case. This is seen as protecting the privacy of the individual being protected. Generally even with a sealed case the protected person and the guardian/conservatory are allowed to talk about the case just not any other party or the court. Under a guardianship the guardian can restrict access to the protected person and in doing so effectively limit their speech. Under a conservatorship I could see a lawyer making the argument that if she was allowed to speak freely she could say something that might damage her brand and earning opportunities and therefore she should be barred from making any public statements without approval. Without seeing the case file and reading the actual orders in place, I can’t say for certain what restrictions are in place and the court’s reasoning.
Her situation combined with the clearly lacking record keeping of guardianship cases already made me think this was an easy system for people to manipulate but this video with the examples you’ve collected really showed me how possible abuse is within it. The amount of things people can be potentially institutionalized for cuts so far into human rights and autonomy, it should be unacceptable. She can’t even look at how _HER_ money is being spent
I'm disabled and my mom and sister have gardenship of me but if I go to court or find someone to marry in Cort they sign I sgin they would lose the over the person part of the gardenship over me I would have to go to court for financial to get that

I just watched the New York Times documentary on this topic and I just wanted to say while I do not condone driving with a baby on her lap, she was chased into the car by paparazzi who were banging on her windows. She just wanted to get away from them.
It's funny, I've never thought about my bipolar disorder as a disability, even though it has limited my life a lot for years, and I depend on aids (medication in my case) to live functionally. Makes sense It's actually good to put it in that light, because it emphasize how this is not me being lazy and coming up with excuses, but something real
Been in the 'I'm just lazy, not disabled'-mentality for a large portion of my life. Almost getting a burnout trying to keep up with my peers forced me to reassess a lot. Just because other people don't see the work you do in your head doesn't mean it isn't exhausting. I hope you are kind to yourself in that regard.

I've always thought of my bipolar disorder as a disability because it impairs my life at random, even if meds help 90% of the time. You are def not lazy or making excuses because we struggle with things not everyone has to.
Being told by my psychiatrist that my cyclothymia (bipolar type 3) was making me disabled, helped me a lot too. Like, no I'm not a failure because I can't be as productive, and participate to society the way non mentally ill/physically disabled persons, I'm just walking at my own pace, and that is ok. We always think about people who are physically paralyzed when we think "disability", but mental illnesses can paralyze you just as much.
As a social worker in the US, this is why I'm always stressing completing Living wills and mental health declarations while you are well. This keeps health professionals aware of your prior decisions with your treatment. It's never too early to get these!
Sadly, this happens to disabled people in the U.S. who are able to be independent, with just a little help. Conservatorships have so much corruption, and they seem to be causing more harm than good.
There need to be people who are in charge of other people's finances and personal decisions (only in cases where this is necessary, of course, and only to the degree this is necessary) who don't benefit from it financially apart from being paid for the actual work they do. It cannot be a lucrative thing apart from it being your normal job to for example support maybe four rather mildly mentally disabled people in their everyday life if this, in fact, leads to that much work. It's an important task to help someone live as independently as possible. And there should be oversight to make sure that people don't help others more than necessary just so they can make more money. No nonsense like "helping" someone for four hours if the actual help they need only keeps you busy for 25 minutes. (I know that social workers working in certain areas tend to way more "help" than necessary so they don't risk losing their cushy job ...) I think it would be absolutely correct if I could earn a living assisting four (mentally) disabled people for about six to ten hours each week with things they actually need help with. Sometimes more, sometimes less help depending on what these people happen to need that week. And since I'd be ready to help each of them ten hours a week, I think I should be paid full-time. But officially, with a set salary that isn't affected by the wealth of the people I assist.
During the documentary released in Feburary, the lawyer who Britney attempted to use during the beginning of the conservatorship said that during their meetings before the case Britney said she'd accept the temporary conservatorship as long as it wasn't her father controling it, practically begged for it not to be her father controlling it back then. They were not told til they got to the court date that she was not allowed to choose her own lawyer even pre-conservatorship which is also so suspicious
I really hope something changes for her. I just wish the best for her. Its just so incomprehensible as well that with all those resources she couldn’t get the therapy and help to organize her own life. Its so clear she doesn’t get help but just gets milked for money. Honestly there is really not much you can’t heal from in such a long time. The whole industry is disgusting. Edit: the dementia thing is such a ridiculous lie. This is eye opening as I previously had no idea. Her social media posts seemed so awkward, knowing this now it makes perfect sense she would look so uncomfortable and be so "memeable"... It's saddening and not funny at all.
Her song lyrics have always been very telling, and hearing her sing in her original/real voice is so upsetting (listen to her in the Mickey Mouse Club as a kid) when you think about how much she’s messed up her vocal chords...just to sound like a strange adult baby, and it was never her choice/desire 😑 it was to make her...less like Cristina Aguilera?? So stupid. I also didn’t understand what was funny about her public breakdown, people continuously make memes using her likeness in those difficult moments 😒 when that big moment happened, it reminded me of Marylin Monroe, one of the first major celebrities to cry/show deep despair to the public as a result of horrible mental and emotional distress/possible mental illness. She was also swarmed by paparazzi as she literally tried to blend into the wall behind her. I feel so much for Britney, thank you for this thorough video, Jessica!
What I find so crazy is that in many states Brittany would have never even been considered for a "Conservatorship". I've worked a lot with adults with disabilities in Pennsylvania where I live and there is almost never a Guardianship granted, the criteria are simply too high you literally have to be labelled as "incapacitated." Additionally the person must be given preference in choosing the guardian (they also can't stand to benefit from a will so it's rarely a family member) It also can't be a "business" only non-profits and individuals are usually granted them. (Obviously law and reality are different) But most importantly it just like almost never happens. More likely than not people are placed in a Power of Attorney position. It's appalling to hear about the vast number if situations across the US and the widespread abuse.
If i were placed under conservatorship, i would be completely unable to prove i shouldnt be, because of my crappy mental health. And i have a full time job, my own place, a degree....
TW: trauma connected with medical personnel A few years ago I worked for an abusive man who liked to scream at me for "not doing my job" or not doing it properly, especially when I was reading a book or doing crosswords during the time when there were no clients. I was never very healthy in the mental health department. The year prior I was hospitalised for a suicide attempt, so I still had some leftover problems to work through. I am very prone to dissociation, so when I finally broke and went into a non-responsive, the worst dissociative episode of my life because he screamed at me one too many times the ambulance was called. When they arrived, they treated me like an animal. Mocked me, searched me for drugs, accused me of doing this for attention, openly laughed at me when I couldn't respond. Berated me during the drive to the hospital. I'm not scared of medical workers in general, but ambulance staff always terrifies me and since that moment when I had an emergency I never called an ambulance, preferring to call a cab or ask a friend. They genuinely cause me to have a panic attack.
It was honestly the most humiliating experience in my life. Medical staff tends to treat you like garbage if your illness is not noticeable, but then it treats visibly disabled people like trash too. It can be discouraging to look for help when it is that way
I don't know how to feel about ambulance workers. I found a woman throwing up blood when my mom and I were on a walk years ago. We sat her down and got her some water. I asked her if she wanted an ambulance and she was hesitant to say yes, but clearly she needed medical help. My mom talked with her while I called. The responders didn't take her seriously. They said she's homeless and just using services for a bed at night. But it was morning and I saw bloody vomit. She needed help. The job they chose is to help, not judge her circumstances. I understand empathy burn out, but now I wonder if some don't just take the job for a bit of a power trip.
That sounds horrible. I’m sorry you had to go through that. I’ve seen similar things, and worse. I hope things change to make people and medical professionals, more accountable and compassionate.
My dad has chronic back pain. It doesn't get too bad often, but one time he was literally howling from pain. We called an ambulance to transport him so that he could get the treatment he needed. Unsurprisingly, ambulance workers didn't treat it seriously, they told him TO STAND UP and at the end when he was literally crying from pain he just got a painkiller shot that did fuckall and they pissed off, didn't even take him for an evaluation. My cousin who is a nurse got him anti-inflammatory shots and he was so much better after that. If they bothered to take him there he would get them instantly, but apparently they like to specialize in dehumanizing people.
This is sad and scary to me as a person in general, but even more so as a person with a mental illness. I've always been terrified of having a breakdown so bad I'm no longer allowed to have my own autonomy. The chances of that happening to me are probably not that high, but just imagining what Brittney goes through is awful.
I'd advice anyone to stay away from that sick system. Mental health diagnosis is like branding and you can never get rid of it, even if it is a one of breakdown. It allows people to mistrust you disbelieve you and dismiss you. Fuck psychiatry and all that crap, it literally does more harm to people than help.
This was a great video. During the time of the publicity of Britney's breakdown, I was sayiing over and over again that she needs help and it's awful to mock her at this time, and literally no one responded positively to it. Everyone just laughed or joked about it. I was genuinely worried about her. Child stars often struggle and I'm not particularly a fan of hers but she is a human. Anyone who has read/seen the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series knows about legal guardianship - it can be a joke. Free Britney is as important as Free Kesha.
She's also white. So the fact that she has class privilege, white privilege, cultural notoriety (and thus fans), and she's still in this situation? Absolutely terrifying.
Britney's struggle is something I relate to on a personal level. While my experience was nowhere near as cripplingly limited, I know what it feels like to be restricted by a conservatorship. When I was a child, I was statemented, which basically means I was under a child psychologist and monitored periodically as they tried to figure out what was going on with my mental health. It was very laid back and relaxed monitoring, not clinical, and it didn't really affect my life until much later. After 11 years, from the age of 5 to the age of 16, my monitoring ended with inconclusive results and, as a result, no extra steps were taken. I didn't find out that my mother's guardianship of me stretched past my 18th birthday, as I was a legal adult and supposed to be in control of my own finances. Against my own wishes, my mother had full control over grants and scholarship awards and bursaries linked with my education, my bank account and my legal rights. As a result, I was unable to make any decisions myself and I never saw any of my money. What made it worse was that nobody ever made me aware of any of this and it wasn't until I was made redundant from my job when I was 19 and ended up having to sign up for government support that I learned just how much power my mother had over my life. I wasn't legally allowed to talk to the Department of Work and Pensions directly, as my mother was listed as appointee. I brought this to her attention and she was pretty much forced to admit that I had been under a conservatorship and that she hadn't wanted that knowledge to affect my life and had opted not to tell me anything. All of the money I had brought in from my bursaries and grants had been redirected to my mother's personal account and had been spent on educational necessities, which I had never known before because I hadn't been the one signing up for them. I was lucky in the fact that, after I was properly diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder the following year and was stabilised properly with therapy and medication, I was allowed by my mother to have the conservatorship ended and we had to meet with solicitors and go to court to prove me capable of running my own life. I had my conservatorship officially closed just before my 21st birthday. One thing that has always annoyed me about the British government though is how slow they are to pick up on changes because, even now when I have to speak to the DWP, they will occasionally ask me if my appointee" is available to speak to them on my behalf and I have to e-mail a new copy of the letter pertaining to the results of my conservatorship dissolution as proof that I am in control of my own person and need no assistance. 😖

It's ridiculus that the courts belived your behaviour & symptoms were severe enough for you to not be able to care for yourself. Yet the mental health services didn't seem alarmed or notice enough symptoms to diagnose you with any medical condition. I am glad you received an accurate diagnosis then appropriate & sucsessful treatment as an adult. Also relived that your mother let you have control over your life but lying to you about it is a huge abuse of trust, that I couldn't forgive. My sister had bad care from CAMHS & by talking to others I know her experience is not rare. It's a shame that they are waisting early intervention by seemingly minimizing most childrens emotional/mental distress & hoping it will magically dissappear by the time they turn 18. Not that adult mental health services are perfect but actual diagnosis seem more common. My sister got her autism diagnosis, along with more recognition how low much her anxiety impacts her life eventually in her late 20's.
Off topic note: I have ADHD and I struggle to concentrate while watching videos on RUclips. However, having capitions helps this (idk why). Most of the time I have to use the auto generated ones which isn't helpful since it's often inaccurate. I love watching Jessica's videos because of the topics she talks about and the way she talks about them in a fun way which helps keep me concentrated and I'm so happy she has the scripted captions too! I cannot remember who said it but there is a famous quote and I know I’m paraphrasing but it’s along the lines of “that which you cannot criticize is what controls you”. So if Britney isn’t allowed to speak up about the conservatorship that was done absolutely for a reason. The same goes for a job where you have to sign “happiness contracts” stating that you’ll never say anything bad about the business and they’ll sue you or fire you if you do, or oppressive governments where people are not allowed to speak out, or demonstrate against those in power for fear of violence. They have her voice under lock and key for a reason.

Also, her appointed lawyer, Sam Ingham, whom she cannot fire, has a lawsuit against him for conspiring to kill US radio legend Casey Kasem for financial gain. According to Billboard, he showed up at the Kasem's house with an armed guard to force Kasem, who was in his eighties and living with dementia, into a conservatorship. His wife vehemently protested his being taken away (and they call her crazy, of course), but less than a month later when Kasem's daughter was able to visit him, his health had declined so rapidly that he was close to death. His widow filed the lawsuit accusing Ingham of conspiring with his older children to isolate him so he would die for their financial gain. Ingham made large amounts of money off of the family in legal fees. This is the person who was chosen as Britney's lawyer. He's never going to let her go willingly

Yep. Also the whole "oh, she doesn't know how to drive or do this and that". Well, she can hire a driver. Or hire somebody to teach her to drive better. She can hire people to help her. Also, if it was really about helping her, then why not slowly teach her after she got better? Her father could have just slowly get her into the business side until she was actually capable of managing it. And if she happened to hire a bad person at some point for something? Well, that sucks, but that's also how you learn. You reflect on what possible red flags you missed, what you should have looked for and you learn.
The baby on her lap situation was when Britney was leaving a shopping centre, with no security. Her car was surrounded by paparazzi and she was alone with her baby. She fleed the situation by holding her baby on her lap. It’s not as if she was out for a leisurely cruise. She was harassed by dozens of men surrounding her with cameras. She had to act quickly for the safety and well-being of herself and her child. That’s important to include when reciting the incident.
Also her uncle shared this story about Britney's father being drunk and deciding to drive his car with 4 year old Britney on it, her uncle had to fight Jamie to stop him while baby Britney screamed and cried. Britney's sister let her daughter drive a ATV which almost resulted in her death and nobody questioned Britney's father or her sister. It's infuriating.

Same with the incident where she was lambasted for "almost dropping" her baby. Yeah, she almost dropped the baby while literally fleeing a mob of paparazzi, who then sold the footage of it to tabloids who turned it into 'Britney is a terrible mother' rather than 'our photographers almost injured an infant due to their harrassing its mother.

I have some distant relatives who are using their disabled grandpa with brain damage to get his money for stuff and he is usually left hungry and unwashed. Since he has brain damage (I think it's from stroke but I totally forgot) he personally has a thing that he fixates on and that's traveling from town to town and they leave him unmonitored and once he was missing for 2-3 days and they found him on the road, almost dead from freezing. I'm so disgusted by ableism in my country....

I've been trying to get him back for 9 years now, but the diagnosis which was supposed to (and did to an extent) help me get better is now standing between me and my child. This is disregarding how I'm pretty much single-handedly taking care of my mother who is sick with cancer, how I have always handled myself in every single other aspect of life, and how my son cries with grief every single time I'm forced to send him back to his carers after his home visits.

What I don't understand is that under a conservatorship her Dad can actually take a salary. This should be ABSOLUTELY illegal. It puts any person in danger of being exploited. All the proceeds that she earns should be put into a trust for her and all proceeds should be used for her medical care. The person in control of her assets should not make a dime of her. This rings of how in the past husbands could have their wives committed to steal their inheritance.
Yeah that confuses me too. I can understand a conservator being in charge of the person's finances. I can understand the conservator perhaps being reimbursed by the government or someone if they need to give full time care and thus can't bring in enough income to support themselves and the person they are caring for. But how on earth is it legal to draw an income from someone whose finances you have complete legal control over? And then get to dictate how much your income should be on top of that? It seems like a pretty serious flaw in the system.
Or in the instance where a salary is needed (since I’d imagine there are genuine conservatorships where caring for that person is basically a full time job) it has to be a regulated, established rate that can only be adjusted using legal pathways, proving that its necessary due to a, b, or c reason. Getting to establish your own salary, give yourself raises, etc is out of the question and unacceptable.

I'm just gonna explain this since I spoke to my dad about this today: the guardianships where the person still has rights it's because the guardianship is done out of a place of love, respect, and concern. In the case of Britney it was most likely done out of a place of wanting power, money, or both.

Yeah, if she has dementia, I want to know what super drug they've got her on because she's doing better than any other patient on the planet. I have known people with early onset dementia - they can go from still being able to hold a coherent conversation, and needing some supervision but not 24/7 care, to not being able to walk, being aggressive, unmanageable and needing round the clock watching in a matter of years, sometimes less. And while my grandmother wasn't early onset, she went from 'confused' to 'danger to herself' in a year or two. It's been what? 20 years? And Britney's performing, interviewing, coherent. At this point that's not even 'slow going' dementia, that's 'miracle cure'.

In Denmark, people with a mental diagnosis can not be officially 'cured / healthy', and struggle to: adopt a child, become a pilot, fireman, police officer, sailor, or au-pair.

Many US states will let a 15 year-old drive on their own with nothing more than a written exam and a 1-hour driving lesson. Even if Britney hasn't driven in 12 years, she could take driving lessons, maybe even take her driving license again. Teenagers haven't driven EVER and they are still trusted behind a wheel.

God I do not envy Britney at all. Regardless of what her mental health is like at a baseline, going through the things she did would take a massive toll on anybody. One of my worst fears is losing agency and control over my own decisions, so my heart absolutely goes out to her. She’s effectively a prisoner in her own home, with a conservator who clearly doesn’t have her interests at heart. I’m very glad you brought this up, Jessica. Mental health is such an important subject, and while she’s obviously a celebrity, she’s still human. I genuinely feel bad for Britney
I went through a similar thing where I had a major breakdown where I was unable to look after myself temporarily. I had spent all my money, owed the bank money, was dangerous to myself, etc.
My parents took control of my bank and other elements of my life BUT the difference to what's going on with Britney is that my parents steadily gave me control back as I got better. When I was in recovery they started by allowing me to manage my own food, then going out, steadily increasing my allowance until I had complete control over my bank again.
That's how the system is meant to work but it's true that far too many times that it's easy for people to corrupt for their own gain. I was really lucky my parents wanted the best for me and to support me to get better. But I genuinely worry for others who are now in a more stable place but can't get control of their lives back because of legal loopholes.

Given that disabled people are 2-4 times more likely to be abused, and a disturbing amount of that is from family or guardians, the thought that abusers can literally set it up so that it's illegal for the victim to escape them in any way is so deeply terrifying.
As someone who has experienced psychosis first hand, Britney's story and struggle is one that has always struck me to my core. The notion that a family member could just decide to remove my autonomy and exploit poor mental health laws is terrifying. Especially since they're the reason I am so fucked up to begin with! But where is the psychologist/neurologist/doctor that has to say what is the extent of her disability and what help she needs?? No judge or relative should do that! It's insane.
The point on this: yeah we should be looking to doctors to make this judgement, and review them, and get second opinions. But we rely on judges with legal experience but nothing else.

@@seaborgium919 thing is, she got very convenient diagnose of dementia, which is degenerative (gets worse) and non-reversible. A transitory psychotic episode for example might have required periodic assessment. Dementia is definitive. But the system should have never allowed that to happen on the first place, there should be many evaluations across years. I'm afraid yes, sounds like it's corrupt and can be used to some people's benefit.
Under HIPAA laws, a doctor isn't legally allowed to discuss someone's medical history, without express consent given by the person being treated.And Britney isn't allowed to consent to anything without her FATHER'S consent, which if she isn't actually unstable, he obviously wouldn't give.
And even a doctor he tries to pay off would likely not accept, as it would mean losing his license to practice and possible jail time if it ever came out that Britney HAD NOT consented to that doctor speaking to her medical history.
Basically-
Britney's Real Doctor: Get's permission from Britney to speak on her medical history. Father denies this permission and forbids the doctor from speaking. If the Doctor speaks out, they are in violation of HIPAA law, as the Father didn't consent to the information being revealed, Doctor loses his license and gets arrested.
Fake Doctor: Gets paid by Father to lie about Britney's mental state and abilities. Britney herself never consents to this doctor speaking about her medical history. Even though the father gave his consent- his consent is only permission for BRITNEY HERSELF to consent. He cannot consent to releasing her medical history on her behalf. If Britney reveals she did not consent to the medical information being released, Doctor is in violation of HIPAA, etc etc, can no longer practice medicine.
HIPAA is taken VERY seriously- peoples medical histories are one of the most protected things about them in the US.
Basically the most any other doctor could do would be speculate from the outside about Britney's stability and ability to function. The moment they actually speak to her and ask her any questions about her mental health, that conversation is protected by HIPAA.

I feel that there's also a gender issue here. Many (MANY) male artists have had huge breakdowns and they weren't treated like children because of that. But, of course, women must always behave properly, lest they be considered 'crazy' or 'unstable' (sorry for using these words).
P.S. Of course this is a complex issue, but I felt that gender may also be a factor taking part in it. By no means do I think being 'unstable' is inherently bad, nor do I believe the only reason for this is Britney being a woman.

My cousin, who is a 23 year old man, is severely mentally disabled and there is not much he can do for himself outside of what a toddler is capable of. His mother is his caretaker and makes all important decisions for him but he still, somehow, has more rights than a 30 year old woman who is fully capable of making her own choices! My cousin doesn't even need a conservatorship, I don't think anyone does, honestly.
I'm not a guardian, but I work at a group home for people with neuropsychiatric and developmental disabilities, and my job is to communicate with their guardians about their economy, dentist appointments, hair dresser appointments, doctors appointments, medicine etc. My job is to do all that - and more - so that our klients can live a happy and fulfilling life and be as indepentent as possible. Denying someone their basic human rights and locking them away for months, just for buying a hamburger, ain't it.

Allowing a person that level of control over another person is something that requires intense monitoring by a third party (and even a fourth party) to prevent abuse.

I may not care much about Britney, but this sounds absolutely horrifying- worse than any horror film.
If I was judged based solely on my worst meltdown I'd come out looking pretty bad. At one point after going through periods of heavy disassociation and anxiety attacks basically any time I left my house I thought it would be a good choice to set my hair on fire ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ luckily I did not, but my fiance had to talk me out from under the kitchen table where I was hunkered down convinced my childhood abuser had somehow tracked me down. Two years later and I haven't had an episode in like a year and a half and I went through group therapy and am with a therapist I like a lot. If I was to be judged on the whole of these last two years that breakdown, while awful, was only one part of my life and the progress I've made since then.
I think Britney has been used as a cash-cow by her father since she was a child and that man will do anything possible to keep her from having autonomy over her life.

Ouch. I'm a middle aged man with power of attorney for my mother. I try hard to make the best decisions I can on her behalf. I have once had to make a decision against her will but it was to ensure her safety and well being. I hope I never have to do that again. While technically I am allowed to charge for my services in my opinion that's just not something you do to a family member.

As an attorney in the states, I just wanted to say in most states a conservatorship deals with the financial assets of a person and a guardianship deals with the person. Although a conservatorship can be extremely limiting as it robs the person of financial resources, it cannot force unwanted medical care or imprisonment on a person the way a guardianship has the power to do. A conservator can financially blackmail a person in unwanted situations. Often time a conservatorship is much easier to obtain. In my practice I have seen some real abuses of the conservatorship law. Rebekah Squires Yes you can file for both at the same time. That is often what happens which makes separating the two harder. The Court can even choose to grant one and not the other. Usually a conservatorship is granted rather than guardianship as burden of proof is lower. I had a case were the person demonstrated a lack of ability to understand math and the running of the rental properties her deceased husband left her, but she was still taking care of her personal self and therefore a conservatorship was granted but a guardianship was denied. A power of attorney can be a great tool as it can be narrowly tailored to the needs of the person. Generally a guardianship will void any power of attorney dealing with medical or personal matters and a conservatorship will void any power of attorney having to do with fiscal matters. Neither will void a will made before being declared incompetent. In my state, a person holding a power of attorney is given precedence under the law when the court appoints a guardian or conservator. Also in my state, the alleged incapacitated person must be represented by an independent attorney paid by the state before anything can happen. Each state has different rules.

Elena, #1 Bernie Bro I don’t practice in California. Everything I am about to say is generally applicable, but each state is free to make laws contradicting. Both conservatorships and guardianships are limits on your fundamental rights. It is well established that if there is a compelling state interest the government can abridge your freedoms. The normal example is yelling fire in a theater is illegal. Generally conservatorship and guardianships are sealed proceedings. Meaning no one can access the file or discuss details of the case outside the court unless ordered by the court or necessary for the progression of the case. This is seen as protecting the privacy of the individual being protected. Generally even with a sealed case the protected person and the guardian/conservatory are allowed to talk about the case just not any other party or the court. Under a guardianship the guardian can restrict access to the protected person and in doing so effectively limit their speech. Under a conservatorship I could see a lawyer making the argument that if she was allowed to speak freely she could say something that might damage her brand and earning opportunities and therefore she should be barred from making any public statements without approval. Without seeing the case file and reading the actual orders in place, I can’t say for certain what restrictions are in place and the court’s reasoning.

Her situation combined with the clearly lacking record keeping of guardianship cases already made me think this was an easy system for people to manipulate but this video with the examples you’ve collected really showed me how possible abuse is within it. I just watched the New York Times documentary on this topic and I just wanted to say while I do not condone driving with a baby on her lap, she was chased into the car by paparazzi who were banging on her windows. She just wanted to get away from them.

I've always thought of my bipolar disorder as a disability because it impairs my life at random, even if meds help 90% of the time. You are def not lazy or making excuses because we struggle with things not everyone has to.
Being told by my psychiatrist that my cyclothymia (bipolar type 3) was making me disabled, helped me a lot too. Like, no I'm not a failure because I can't be as productive, and participate to society the way non mentally ill/physically disabled persons, I'm just walking at my own pace, and that is ok. We always think about people who are physically paralyzed when we think "disability", but mental illnesses can paralyze you just as much.
As a social worker in the US, this is why I'm always stressing completing Living wills and mental health declarations while you are well. This keeps health professionals aware of your prior decisions with your treatment. It's never too early to get these!
Sadly, this happens to disabled people in the U.S. who are able to be independent, with just a little help. Conservatorships have so much corruption, and they seem to be causing more harm than good.
There need to be people who are in charge of other people's finances and personal decisions (only in cases where this is necessary, of course, and only to the degree this is necessary) who don't benefit from it financially apart from being paid for the actual work they do. It cannot be a lucrative thing apart from it being your normal job to for example support maybe four rather mildly mentally disabled people in their everyday life if this, in fact, leads to that much work. It's an important task to help someone live as independently as possible. And there should be oversight to make sure that people don't help others more than necessary just so they can make more money. No nonsense like "helping" someone for four hours if the actual help they need only keeps you busy for 25 minutes. (I know that social workers working in certain areas tend to way more "help" than necessary so they don't risk losing their cushy job ...) I think it would be absolutely correct if I could earn a living assisting four (mentally) disabled people for about six to ten hours each week with things they actually need help with. Sometimes more, sometimes less help depending on what these people happen to need that week. And since I'd be ready to help each of them ten hours a week, I think I should be paid full-time. But officially, with a set salary that isn't affected by the wealth of the people I assist.
During the documentary released in Feburary, the lawyer who Britney attempted to use during the beginning of the conservatorship said that during their meetings before the case Britney said she'd accept the temporary conservatorship as long as it wasn't her father controling it, practically begged for it not to be her father controlling it back then. They were not told til they got to the court date that she was not allowed to choose her own lawyer even pre-conservatorship which is also so suspicious

I also didn’t understand what was funny about her public breakdown, people continuously make memes using her likeness in those difficult moments 😒 when that big moment happened, it reminded me of Marylin Monroe, one of the first major celebrities to cry/show deep despair to the public as a result of horrible mental and emotional distress/possible mental illness. She was also swarmed by paparazzi as she literally tried to blend into the wall behind her.

What I find so crazy is that in many states Brittany would have never even been considered for a "Conservatorship". I've worked a lot with adults with disabilities in Pennsylvania where I live and there is almost never a Guardianship granted, the criteria are simply too high you literally have to be labelled as "incapacitated." Additionally the person must be given preference in choosing the guardian (they also can't stand to benefit from a will so it's rarely a family member) It also can't be a "business" only non-profits and individuals are usually granted them. (Obviously law and reality are different) But most importantly it just like almost never happens. More likely than not people are placed in a Power of Attorney position. It's appalling to hear about the vast number if situations across the US and the widespread abuse.

TW: trauma connected with medical personnel
A few years ago I worked for an abusive man who liked to scream at me for "not doing my job" or not doing it properly, especially when I was reading a book or doing crosswords during the time when there were no clients. I was never very healthy in the mental health department. The year prior I was hospitalised for a suicide attempt, so I still had some leftover problems to work through. I am very prone to dissociation, so when I finally broke and went into a non-responsive, the worst dissociative episode of my life because he screamed at me one too many times the ambulance was called. When they arrived, they treated me like an animal. Mocked me, searched me for drugs, accused me of doing this for attention, openly laughed at me when I couldn't respond. Berated me during the drive to the hospital.
I'm not scared of medical workers in general, but ambulance staff always terrifies me and since that moment when I had an emergency I never called an ambulance, preferring to call a cab or ask a friend. They genuinely cause me to have a panic attack.

It was honestly the most humiliating experience in my life. Medical staff tends to treat you like garbage if your illness is not noticeable, but then it treats visibly disabled people like trash too. It can be discouraging to look for help when it is that way
I don't know how to feel about ambulance workers. I found a woman throwing up blood when my mom and I were on a walk years ago. We sat her down and got her some water. I asked her if she wanted an ambulance and she was hesitant to say yes, but clearly she needed medical help. My mom talked with her while I called. The responders didn't take her seriously. They said she's homeless and just using services for a bed at night. But it was morning and I saw bloody vomit. She needed help. The job they chose is to help, not judge her circumstances. I understand empathy burn out, but now I wonder if some don't just take the job for a bit of a power trip.

My dad has chronic back pain. It doesn't get too bad often, but one time he was literally howling from pain. We called an ambulance to transport him so that he could get the treatment he needed. Unsurprisingly, ambulance workers didn't treat it seriously, they told him TO STAND UP and at the end when he was literally crying from pain he just got a painkiller shot that did fuckall and they pissed off, didn't even take him for an evaluation. My cousin who is a nurse got him anti-inflammatory shots and he was so much better after that. If they bothered to take him there he would get them instantly, but apparently they like to specialize in dehumanizing people.

This is sad and scary to me as a person in general, but even more so as a person with a mental illness. I've always been terrified of having a breakdown so bad I'm no longer allowed to have my own autonomy. I'd advice anyone to stay away from that sick system. Mental health diagnosis is like branding and you can never get rid of it, even if it is a one of breakdown. This was a great video. During the time of the publicity of Britney's breakdown, I was sayiing over and over again that she needs help and it's awful to mock her at this time, and literally no one responded positively to it. Everyone just laughed or joked about it. I was genuinely worried about her. Child stars often struggle and I'm not particularly a fan of hers but she is a human. Anyone who has read/seen the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series knows about legal guardianship - it can be a joke. Free Britney is as important as Free Kesha.

Britney's struggle is something I relate to on a personal level. While my experience was nowhere near as cripplingly limited, I know what it feels like to be restricted by a conservatorship. When I was a child, I was statemented, which basically means I was under a child psychologist and monitored periodically as they tried to figure out what was going on with my mental health. It was very laid back and relaxed monitoring, not clinical, and it didn't really affect my life until much later. After 11 years, from the age of 5 to the age of 16, my monitoring ended with inconclusive results and, as a result, no extra steps were taken. I didn't find out that my mother's guardianship of me stretched past my 18th birthday, as I was a legal adult and supposed to be in control of my own finances. Against my own wishes, my mother had full control over grants and scholarship awards and bursaries linked with my education, my bank account and my legal rights. As a result, I was unable to make any decisions myself and I never saw any of my money. What made it worse was that nobody ever made me aware of any of this and it wasn't until I was made redundant from my job when I was 19 and ended up having to sign up for government support that I learned just how much power my mother had over my life. I wasn't legally allowed to talk to the Department of Work and Pensions directly, as my mother was listed as appointee. I brought this to her attention and she was pretty much forced to admit that I had been under a conservatorship and that she hadn't wanted that knowledge to affect my life and had opted not to tell me anything. All of the money I had brought in from my bursaries and grants had been redirected to my mother's personal account and had been spent on educational necessities, which I had never known before because I hadn't been the one signing up for them. I was lucky in the fact that, after I was properly diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder the following year and was stabilised properly with therapy and medication, I was allowed by my mother to have the conservatorship ended and we had to meet with solicitors and go to court to prove me capable of running my own life. I had my conservatorship officially closed just before my 21st birthday. One thing that has always annoyed me about the British government though is how slow they are to pick up on changes because, even now when I have to speak to the DWP, they will occasionally ask me if my appointee" is available to speak to them on my behalf and I have to e-mail a new copy of the letter pertaining to the results of my conservatorship dissolution as proof that I am in control of my own person and need no assistance. 😖

I am glad that this all worked out in the end. You are clearly a very intelligent, well-spoken woman. I was wondering what conservatorship looked like in Britain.
You don't sound as if you're mad at your mother ... Are you actually not or am I misreading something?
It's ridiculus that the courts belived your behaviour & symptoms were severe enough for you to not be able to care for yourself. Yet the mental health services didn't seem alarmed or notice enough symptoms to diagnose you with any medical condition.
I am glad you received an accurate diagnosis then appropriate & sucsessful treatment as an adult. Also relived that your mother let you have control over your life but lying to you about it is a huge abuse of trust, that I couldn't forgive.
My sister had bad care from CAMHS & by talking to others I know her experience is not rare. It's a shame that they are waisting early intervention by seemingly minimizing most childrens emotional/mental distress & hoping it will magically dissappear by the time they turn 18. Not that adult mental health services are perfect but actual diagnosis seem more common. My sister got her autism diagnosis, along with more recognition how low much her anxiety impacts her life eventually in her late 20's.
Off topic note: I have ADHD and I struggle to concentrate while watching videos on RUclips. However, having capitions helps this (idk why). Most of the time I have to use the auto generated ones which isn't helpful since it's often inaccurate. I love watching Jessica's videos because of the topics she talks about and the way she talks about them in a fun way which helps keep me concentrated and I'm so happy she has the scripted captions too! That's so weird, I always seem to prefer having captions/subtitles on as well and never thought it might be connected to the ADHD (always feel weird including the h because i'm all inattentive type, no hyperactivity, unless maybe you count the brain being hyperactive?? hmmm...)
@@tajessamie Audio processing issues are common in people with ADHD. I have ADHD and I also find closed captioning very helpful.
I love her captions! I almost always watch her videos that way. I'm watching this video with sound and it surprised me to hear her English accent!
