In one of his final interviews, Kobe Bryant was asked, if there was one player he wished he could have played with, who it would be. Answer = Diamantidis
Kobe was one of the few American basketball players with legit knowledge and respect for international basketball... He studied the game in every aspect and knew the game was global years before the rise of international superstar players...
His passing was very similar to Doncic and Ginobili, he was an amazing on ball defender and an even better help defender. Great versatility, clutch when his team needed buckets. As an Olympiacos fan I hated Diamantidis with passion but he's the most complete player I've seen in Euroleague to this day. In my opinion he's the greatest European to not play in the NBA of the last 20 years.
He was a point guard, of 1.96m, and is arguably the greatest defensive player in european basketball. Holds the Euroleague record for the most steals by a player, and the most blocks by a guard. Won Euroleague's Best Defender award 6 times (5 consecutive). He is still the only player in Euroleague's history to win Season MVP, Final Four MVP and Best Defender at the same year. With his high basketball iq, playmaking skills, elite defense, reliability in shooting, and leadership he would have succeeded in any team, even in the NBA.
Being one of the greatest defenders of all time in Europe is the exact reason that i believe he would not have succeeded in the NBA, along with the fundamental basketball differences between NBA and Europe . Best case scenario, role player in a regular playoff team. Much better for all of us (fans) that he didnt want to even try, so we had the chance to enjoy him all these years.
No wonder kobe wanted diamantidis on the lakers...imagine a player that has blocked duncan, kobe, wade and chris paul in his career while not playing a single game in the nba. That is diamantidis for you
@@Gk-vs2fh Spanoulis was also a great player but his best point was the scoring ability. He couldn't do the stuff Diamantidis could do. For me Spanoulis was better scorer but Diamantidis was a more complete player and with higher basketball IQ.

Im glad the stats line suggested here for his NBA career was not something outrageous - an honest 7-3-3 - best comp? not sure - players with that style tend not to play in the NBA - maybe a less flashy Lonzo? - but with way more control of the game - for those who have not seen this guy play, it may not seem much - but as an italian fan, anytime MPS or Bologna would play against the greens, i was like 'oh gosh, there we go again' - in some way, all played the game he wanted to play - octopus indeed, spreading his tentacles on the game - you never thought, not once, 'uh, now hes gonna do some dumb shit' - he played effortlessly, passionately - coach brown would say 'the right way' - what a pleasure to see the guy go at it - ευχαριστώ

Yes he could. He was a very high IQ player. He could do everything in the court. He could pass, he could play defence, he could score, he could steal, block, grab rebounds etc. He was a one army man. A guy for every job and totall selfless. The team victory was above everything. As a Panathinaikos fan I'm very lucky I saw this player playing for my team for so many years. In my opinion as I said in the beginning for me he could definitely play in the NBA. Only love and respect for our captain 3D!
Imagine 08-11 Lakers sign Diamantidis as a starting point guard. PG Diamantidis SG Bryant SF Ariza/Artest PF Gasol C Bynum Brown and Odom coming off the bench.
I'm sure he would have been a starter for a contender in the NBA. He was easily the best Greek player and perhaps the best European player from the mid 2000s to early 2010s. He was asked many times to cross the Atlantic, but he chose to stay loyal to Panathinaikos. You also forgot to speak about how clutch he was. He shot below 40% from three for his career, but when the match was on stake, he would shoot and 9 out of 10 times the ball would go in. His 3pt shot vs France still sends chills down the spine of Greeks.
I am an Olympiakos fun, but I have to admit, his talent and as a personality, has been well respected by our funs! He was a magic spectacle to see him, even as an opponent .
There are many former european players that would have done amazingly in the NBA. Galanda, Basile, Pozzecco, Gentile....so many. So many Americans still believe that every basketball player's dream is to go to NBA but that's simply not true.
To be honest European Basketball has more depth and doesn't want to numb your brain with flashy things. The absolute example is the game Greece - USA . It's like Quality vs Quantity ;p
The only question mark of him playing in the NBA would be whether his incredible basketball IQ would hold up with the much more taxing schedule and the higher opposition athleticism. Playing in reduced minutes though I think he could have handled it nicely and turn into a superb complementary player in a championship-caliber team. The guy was like a computer out there.
This vid needs more views. Not as many people as they should, know Diamantidis. This is a disgrace, easily one of the best, selfless and all around players in European Basketball history🙏
It's nice that you know so much things about diamantidis cause he is not an explosive player and it takes effort to see what exactly he did in the court, true leader🙏🇬🇷
i am a Panathinaikos fan so i cannot be 100,% objective. All his numbers and accolades are records that will take too much time to break in the European basketball. But what cannot be described with numbers is that when the ball was in his hands you knew that it would end either to a pass that is a basket ready or he would shoot it sometimes even with more risk but the ball usually got inside. For his defence skills i believe that he is the best player of all times globaly, including NBA. Simply no doubt about it. We miss you Mitso, please put back on your shoes and come to our OAKA home
Great vid although there should be a bit more analysis on his defensive ability. Dude won 6dpoys in a row and he was always second to none on defense despite his lack of speed and explosiveness
I am sure that he didn't want to cross the Atlantic. The style of nba doesn't match with the european style and Diamantidis was the european basketball himself. We are lucky to live in his era. Panathinaikos era!☘️
Most probably would have been somewhat like Ginobili in Spurs. Very similar type of player in terms of mentality. Though the games that I have seen between Greece and Argentina, I would say Diamantidis was probably a more versatile player, I believe he could have easily been in defensive team of the year had he adapted to the NBA style.
yes like any other great Euroleague player Problem is the NBA has failed many times in correctly utilizing great players. Need to be with the right team/coach
How beautiful is European basketball. It's a collective game. NBA, specialy contemporary, is a flashy, athletic, one on one, superstar show. I prefer '80s and '90s NBA. European basketball is based on IQ, skills and team game. Nowadays NBA is run, jump and dunk. Raw athleticism. Jokic and Doncic are strong examples of how pure skills and intelligence dominate athleticism. Diamantidis is one of the greatest.
this is your reply by kobe himself .... ruclips.net/video/0h-Y97Ms2GI/видео.html&ab_channel=SuperGreek , apart from that , he WOULD gain his place in the nba because unlike most europeans he was a defensive beast.... steals recordman , many blocks even to centers , and rebounds for a guard and could play and guard 3 positions , and as a point guard he would always have height advantage to the other pgs , and play them down low
Stats dont describe what this player did in the court....i watched every pana match the years between 09-15 and every time he was on the court u were sure that he was going to lead us to win...its one thing to be a clutch shooter and hit a game winner or a cluth 3 pointer ...and its another thing to ALWAYS make the right play....game winning three or game winning block or clutch assist, offensive rebound,steal,block....he is the only player that in the clutch he would ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS make a clutch play...
At the time of his peak he could only have played for the Spurs as an elite backup of TP. The 2006 Greek national team win proves that all of those guards (papaloukas, spanoulis, diamantidis) were more than capable of playing excellent team defense and PnR offense against extreme athletes like lebron. In today's NBA especially diamantidis would be an efficient less talented Luka Doncic on offense and a beast on set defense but with big minus in transition or one on one defense. A bit like Joe Ingles as far as athleticism is concerned. Durability is the biggest issue and also the coach should know how and want to use him.
At his peak ( 2007) with the right coach, the nba equipment and the confidence boost from teammates he could be a starter in a contender if he was patient enough to stay in the NBA. Back in the day european players weren't as popular in the nba as of today, when rookies from europe can easily be starters in teams. What mattered is mindset and patience which is why spanoulis and saras failed. If 3D had those figured, he could be a starter in a contending team.. You don't believe me? Watch Kobe Bryant's interview on him
it depends it was now in this ERA or when he played...NOW YES for sure...in that time he would just be a good player...NBA media and coaches dont give freedom to EUROPEAN players...you have to be a MARKETING player to have some freedom or play in a small marketing team that allows you to shine.
We know by fact that he would have succeeded in NBA and not only by mere statistics. Greece defeated the so called new dream team of USA at the 2006 Word Cup 101-95 and one of the key players was Diamantidis.12 points, many assists, steals, two three pointers whille being guarded by Lebron and a blockon Chris Paul. Actually blocking was another element of his game and even the great Kobe experienced it once.
He has been in nba his name was manu ginobili.3d was the perfect perimetric player for a team in every league in the world.the most complete play maker in europe
His shooting was poor early in his career . Later on he was much better. He could defend anyone with success in the perimeter . He will steal the ball before you blink..He would rebound.....He would block your shot ...ask Chris Paul in the 2006 semi final ruclips.net/video/j_y8yzDZPzM/видео.html // Kobe knew his abilities and wanted him, but Diamantidis felt more secure in Greece.
Spanoulis could have played in the NBA as well and well. But Van Gundy joined after Spanoulis and he did not like playing newly joining Europeans. He said Europeans have tk stay in the bench first year to adapt to new system and type of hame and he did not add in games Spanoulis. He then was offered to go to Popovic and the Spurs which was good match but Spanoylis declijed the offer for many reasons like family reasons and rhat he dod not like Houston ans was angry as Van Gundy
Honestly, this is a joke. FIBA rules and the way the game is played in the Euroleague don't allow for much in terms of individual heroics. The NBA is all about hero ball and mad stats are easy to come by. Doncic pointed this out himself. 3D was on the court alongside Spanoulis fighting Lebron, D Wade and Melo, and he came out on top, playing by FIBA rules of course. If he was on an NBA bench he'd be 6th Man of the Year, but he could easily have been a starter point guard for just about any team in the league, and he'd be a great contributor. Same for Spanoulis or Galis. The elite Greek guards have always been vastly underrated in my opinion. Problem is they did not grow up playing college basketball in the US, so switching to playing by American rules requires a transition phase, and American teams are known for being very impatient, and perhaps a bit bigoted against foreign players. It took several years for Antentokoumpo to blossom in the NBA, and Doncic also went through a phase of constant improvement. European and American basketball are different sports entirely. But any player who can put up eye-popping single game stats in Euroleague, like Spanoulis casually dropping 30 on championship competitors, or Diamantidis leading the entire league in steals, if they played in the NBA for as long they could maybe be HoF material.
In a team like Spurs (example, cause of their style of play and coach), with the right role (obviously with Popovich) yes could be decent imo. Not great but decent for sure
One of the greatest if's of basketball..what would he become if he had spanoulis' or any other great player's ambition and ego? He just didn't thrive for the extra mile that's my perspective on him..he chilled in Greece and Europe where he thrived instead of trying across..but hey, he is still a legend..a rather purposeless video taking into account he never really wanted it..
This comment is hilarious, ego? What is ego from your perspective in a good manner? Always taking the last shot or making the right play? Trying to get max contracts or agreeing for lower paying deals in order to chase championships? Hustling to be the best offensive force on the floor and not giving a fuck for the defensive end or giving every part of your self in both ends and getting it done by yourself? Getting yourself garbage minutes in NBA games or staying loyal to a team for an entire career? I really don't get what's the ego you're talking about, no-one is or will be close to 3D and what he genuinely represents as a Basketball player and human being.
@@georgioszaphiropoulos5378 That comment may be hilarious only cuz it's my personal opinion..yours is truly biased based solely on the spanoulis reference..some players try to become the best versions they can be..in my opinion he did not, he settled for less..personal opinion, no need for hate or criticism..
@@barondavis7 which Spanoulis reference? A personal opinion should be based on facts and a player that was great in every aspect (defensive-offensive) of the game, does not deserve a nonsense opinion.
If Spanoulis had such an ego and ambition then how come he wasn't even 25% of the defender 3D was? Getout of here with that bullshit. Basketball has two sides and 3D showed up in both. One of the hardest workers in Europe. Your take is lazy and honestly outright stupid.
you asking a question that the best defender / passer / creator / offencer to go to nba were no one defends no one creates no one passes . they would have destroy his career and him propably . the nba is only show . it would be like having a swish knife only to cut paper . it is a waste ! As many people said below this guys had fucking crazy basketball IQ . He wanted to play baskeball with the best against the best ! And not walk down the isle ! of the nba road .
His stats in the NBA if he decided to play : 8 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists 2 steals 1 block and running many many miles inside the court always playing great defense.

3D is the best defender ever played in Euroleague. There is no one else even close.
The only thing that i cant understand about Diamantidis is why he didn't tool care of his body.
Btw the best defender of all time (nba included)
His shooting was poor early in his career . Later on he was much better. He could defend anyone with success in the perimeter . He will steal the ball before you blink..He would rebound.....He would block your shot ...ask Chris Paul in the 2006 semi final ruclips.net/video/j_y8yzDZPzM/видео.html // Kobe knew his abilities and wanted him, but Diamantidis felt more secure in Greece.
In 2k14 he was OP af
IDK if he could have. We saw what happened to Spanoulis back then. Today for sure he'd be fine. Back then, no.
Look what kobe said for him
3d the biggest player of our team 💚☘️
Diamadidis was Luka before Luka
Spanoulis could have played in the NBA as well and well. But Van Gundy joined after Spanoulis and he did not like playing newly joining Europeans. He said Europeans have tk stay in the bench first year to adapt to new system and type of hame and he did not add in games Spanoulis.
He then was offered to go to Popovic and the Spurs which was good match but Spanoylis declijed the offer for many reasons like family reasons and rhat he dod not like Houston ans was angry as Van Gundy
He was a left handed Doncic with better defense. He'd definitely succeed. Luka is already an incredible player.
What if Stathis Psaltis had played in Federico Fellinis movies 🤣🤣🤣🤣
His last name means diamond yk 💎
Decent pick a roll creator?
He is the master of the pick-a-roll. No one ever comes close.
In a team like Spurs (example, cause of their style of play and coach), with the right role (obviously with Popovich) yes could be decent imo. Not great but decent for sure
Yes 👍
@@georgioszaphiropoulos5378 ok man w.e have a good one
If Spanoulis had such an ego and ambition then how come he wasn't even 25% of the defender 3D was? Getout of here with that bullshit. Basketball has two sides and 3D showed up in both. One of the hardest workers in Europe. Your take is lazy and honestly outright stupid.
Check diamantidis 13 points in 75 seconds against Olympia Lubjiana
Diamantidis was the best diffender in europe for a decade
Kobe's comment:

Nick γκάλης the best ever
you asking a question that the best defender / passer / creator / offencer to go to nba were no one defends no one creates no one passes . they would have destroy his career and him propably . the nba is only show . it would be like having a swish knife only to cut paper . it is a waste ! As many people said below this guys had fucking crazy basketball IQ . He wanted to play baskeball with the best against the best ! And not walk down the isle ! of the nba road .
Same style of Mano ginobili..
Practicaly he was luka of his time
👏👏
best European of all time
Why is the too 3 In steals all greeks😂😂
Only if he played to Spurs maybe he had a chance
His stats in the NBA if he decided to play : 8 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists 2 steals 1 block and running many many miles inside the court always playing great defense.
αυτά που θα έκανε ο Διαμαντίδης στην Αμερική που υπάρχει μεγαλύτερος αγωνιστικός χώρος,θα τα μνημονευαμε εσαεί.
diamantidis = messi
spanoulis = garnacho
One of the best European basketball players ever! But I think NBA wasn’t suitable for him.
