Ground Hornbill (Thunderbird) killing a puffadder, what a sighting was this.
The Ground Hornbill. As big as turkeys, wielding bills like hatchets, these charismatic birds cut an unmistakable dash as they strut around the bush in small family parties. They are one of the longest living birds in the world, known to live up to 70 years in captivity! With thanks for this information to David J Smith.
1:12 oh wow the hornbill's beak thrusting up and down!!! Don't mess with him/her!
Me: Jislaaik, vyf teen een???
Hornbill: Ja, ons het hom goed op gefok.
That's a pretty lethal bird. Does not take any changes it could still be alive. Great video quality.
I just realised that a bird's beak, having no blood vessels, protects it from a poisonous bite. This makes a bird like this better equipped to tackle a poisonous snake than any other predator.
Gerhard,
Great capture.
