    This video just saved me a lot of money that I was tempted to spend on replacing the pickups on my ‘60s CV Strat. The “crank the guitar volume, roll way off the tone, add some light overdrive” approach on the bridge pickup is all I needed. So helpful. The rest of the tones are awesome too. Thank you.

    I bought a 50s CV from the 1st series in 2011 made of alder. At that time the guitar cost around 450 euros. I have 2 Fender FM 212s and a BOSS ME-80 as an effects desk and I have NOT changed anything on the guitar, except for the strings and I always use the Fender 250M
    011-049 and thus have exactly the sound I want. Although I still have a Fender Strat US, I prefer the CV because it brings me the sound of Hank Marvin (Shadows) best. Greetings from Germany

      I just got one and it is a seven piece nato (mahogany"ish" type) body. I thought what is the big hype with these guitars? The wood is not tier one quality, neck or body but they have found a way with electronics to pull it off. It sounds great. And before playing it, I would have bet big money that it would have poor sustain being a pieced together body. I would have lost that bet. It sounds good and rings on even unamplified. My only nitpick is the finish on the neck (being polyurethane) there is a lot more friction on the back of the neck and the fret board, than compared to thin skin nitro I am used to. A little sanding and scotch briteing took care of that and changed the playing dynamics immensely. I can not believe the cost to quality of sound ratio. One of the best purchases I have made in a while.

    I learned more about how a strat works in the 27 minutes of watching this video than anything I have heard or read on the internet in the past 10 years.
    And this despite the fact that I do not perfectly master the English language being a French Canadian from Quebec.
    I was thinking of changing pickups on my Squier Vintage Modified strat, I'm looking to get a more bluesy SRV style sound.
    But after listening to your video, before investing $300 for Lace Sensor Triple Rainbow, I will apply what I learned here.
    A big big thank you!

    I’ve admired this video for years and watch it over again many times on what to do. So many guitarists say replace pickups but only play one way. This guitar CV Squier and PRS SE guitars can do so much with just messing with the controls on the guitar and amp. Great video.

      This is over two years later, but I saw your comment and wanted to agree, Jack is very informative and inspirational. It isn't just the model or brand of stratocaster, but the individual guitars within those brands/models - some are great, most not so much. If you take a great version of one brand/model and compare it to another brand/version, it might be better - while other guitars within those brand/versions would be the opposite. In other words, it isn't just the brand or version of the brand that matters, its the individual strat (or whatever guitar) that matters. Sometimes cheap guitars are awesome, and expensive guitars are horrible - it happens!

    I bought a Squier 59 Classic Vibe Stratocaster and a Fender US Standard Stratocaster about 12 years ago. I prefer to play songs or accompany them with the Squier Classic Vibe, I just like it better with some songs, I don't know why but it is it's so. Fender made a very good decision with this back then and I still don't regret the purchase to this day.

    I've heard that the "secret" of the CV Strat's tone are their AlNiCo lll pickups, pretty much unique in the current Fender range of offerings.
    (It doesn't matter whether you get the 50s, 60s or 70s version, the pups are the same in all of them.)

    • @vladimirdoskocil399
      @vladimirdoskocil399 Год назад

      Yes. This was the case with the original CV series produced between 2008-2014. The CV50 had Alnico III and the CV60 had Alnico V. The Simon Neil Signature had a special bridge pickup with Alnico V (E-A-D) and Alnico III (G-B-e). The parameters and markings of the pickups resembled pickups produced by the ToneRider company - Surfari (for CV50), Classic Blues (for CV60) and Pure Vintage (Simon Neil signature).

    3:37 - That's what I've always said to fellow musicians, the MOST important piece of gear is your amp. Then it's the guitar and lastly the FX. I have so many friends that say "Well not really, most of the time when you hear an amp you're also hearing the brand and model, you can plug your amazing guitar into a solid state Fender Champion and it will sound almost the same."

    Pretty amazing how much tonal options are there once you factor 3 pick up, use of volume, use of tone knobs and dont just default to wide open volume and tone. Add in some reverb overdrive and tremolo effects and you have tons to work with. I love my CV 60s Strat

  • @brettallenthomas

    Ditto what everyone below has said about how informative this is for a new player. I just picked up my first Electric guitar (Squier Sonic) and simply had the volume knob all the way up, and adjusted my Amp volume down to the level I wanted.. without realizing the volume knob would have so much effect on the tone etc.. makes me wish they didn't call it a "volume' knob, but maybe a "Gain" or "Output" knob instead, as it does much more than just effect volume..
    ps, your knowledge and ability to deliver it in a clear way is amazing,, every time I watch one of your videos, I feel like I just watched a Ted Talk on Guitar..

    Got one of the first CV 50s and a Fender Sperchamp XD, which has a pair of 6v6 tubes and a huge number of personalities from 16 voices by 16 effects, also made in China.
    Your demo has been very interesting to me, especially when you tested new sounds backing off volume and tone controls something that too many players wrongly say that they must be all the way up ALWAYS..
    Guitar is very good and amplifier has lots of instantaneous punch and some very pleasant sounds. I loved the XD amp so much that I got a second unit of this same amplifier for my folk acoustic by Tanglewood.

    Great video! Can I ask what gauge of strings you are using on your Squier and do you like low action? Thanks!

      Thanks! This was strung with 9's. Action is pretty medium I guess? I don't like it either too high or low.

    Congratulations on the video, a question to clarify the squier c.v. 50 s: the wood of the body is pine or alder and, if it was alder, is it multi-layered or a single block?

      I have one 2009 60's chinese CV, one 2014 50's chinese CV, one 2019 indo 70's CV and honestly the weight and the body resonance inspire me that they have all the same wood, whereas my other sure alder guitars are heavier, and have another wood resonance ( 2 vintage, and 2 Yamaha Pacifica). I prefer the Vintages and Pacifica.

    Thx for the video Jack. I’m thinking of getting the GTX100 cuz it comes with the Footswitch included/the GTX50 plus the footswitch is almost as much as the GTX100/ also want the classic vibe 50s in white blond plus you dont see strats made from pine.

    Man, I have the same setup as mr. Fossett, except I've got a gtx50. But the sound isn't nearly as close to his sound.
    Even though I been playing for only 3 years, without a tutor or something, just with random youtube vids, I can't imagine there's this much difference.
    For example bending string B16, it doesn't 'scream' as much, just makes an annoying pinchy sound.
    Adjusting the tone knobs down only makes the sound more muzzy/dull.
    Spent like 900 bucks for nothing... Makes me want to give up playing the guitar. The sound demotivates me...

      CV Teles are great also. I have more limited experience with them, however, they're just really solid Telecasters (of which I do have alot of experience with generally speaking) and they match up well. I've been trying to get my hands on one to do some similar videos with it.

    Could you explain how another electric guitar can be "completely different" from a Stratocaster? I'm trying to picture anything that is "completely different" from something else and still exist. I find that people often use phrases like this when they really mean there are minor differences between these very similar things. My hyperbole is completely different from your hyperbole.

    • @JackFossett
      @JackFossett  4 года назад +1

      People also say they're starving when they're really hungry, but I tend to just let it slide. Otherwise we wind up in an endless analysis of said hyperbole.

    • @e.henrythripshaw4554
      @e.henrythripshaw4554 4 года назад

      If that's the case, how do I tell when it's just a figure of speech and not a real point you're making? When you're talking specifically about guitar tone and throw in a non sequitur like "completely different", maybe you should say something like "I really mean this when I say" or "this is literal not just some random words thrown in for effect". Other times you could say something like "space filling words" or "just an expression" and it would be as meaningful. If you were talking about the fine points of cuisine, you probably wouldn't say "I'm starving" and this seems to be a video about the fine points of guitar tone. Apples and oranges are both fruits and a lot more alike than different. That said, I did generally like the video and the playing I just wince a bit when "completely different" and "almost identical" could be used interchangeably.

      If I may be so bold as to speak for the poster, he had his tongue in his cheek when he referred to John Mayer using a "completely different " guitar. He originally used Fender Stats but he now uses P.R.S. . It is basically identical to a Fender, sonically, but because of copyright and suchlike, many companies don't like having their products referred to as "their version of ".
      Then later, when referring to amps, that does require a slightly more trained ear. In the world of guitar they ARE completely different. It won't take long for you to recognise these differences.
      I do sympathise with you, any new hobby is overflowing with information, terminology and opinions. Stay safe.
