    Why didn’t you mention Hongwu: Zhu Yuanzhang? The founder of Ming Dynasty. He beaten the Mongolian and saved the Chinese out of The rule of Mongolian. Btw, he is the only emperor who started as a poor beggar then finally rose to the top in Chinese history.

    i must make a note here that kangxi actually almost bankrupted china (war related), and it was his son emperor yongzheng that frantically worked 364 days a year to bring china back to financial stability. also, by the mid 7th century, chinese territory has made it to modern day central afghanistan and almost all of the korean peninsula (so the map might be a later one, not one of the empire at its peak)

    • @HKspurs10

      kangxi's grandson qianlong was also a great emperor

    • @frankyong7740
      @frankyong7740 3 года назад +4

      @Esther Rui I also learned that Yongzheng in his 13 years of reign or so laid down the healthy fiscal foundation for his son Qianlong's reign to prosper. In the later years of Qianglong's long reign of 60 (plus 3 as Emperor Emeritus), his favoured court official Heshen was scandalously corrupt.

    Cool video! No surprise that Tang Taizong was #1. I'd love to see other videos like this, tho with different, maybe more unusual criteria. Like "great emperors with critical flaws, or whose legacies became critically tarnished" (definitely would put Tang Xuanzong, arguably Sui Wendi), or "emperors who weren't splashy but were solid and kept things going, i.e. are under-appreciated" (Han Wendi and Han Mingdi would be good examples of this). Or "great emperors whose kingdoms didn't span all of China, i.e. omitted from the orthodox narrative" (e.g. Wendi of Chen dynasty). Or "most controversial emperors" (Qin Shihuang has to be the top of this list). I'm obviously an ancient Chinese history geek!

    Chinese history is so incredibly complex so to hear what is China's Greatest moments through its greatest Emperor's and summarizing some of those pinnacle moments in China (while not understanding the full surface level history of China for beginners) it gives a good approach at why China was considered one of the Greatest Nations in History.
    So thanks for that... I might consider checking this channel from top to bottom since I would like to be well versed in some Chinese History (despite the complexities).

  • @YFirstMillion
    @YFirstMillion 7 лет назад +49

    u forgot 秦始皇Qinshihuang. Yes, he was considered as a cruel tyrant, he burnt a lot of precious scribes and killed many scholars. However, in my opinion China as we know it might not even exist with out him! Needlessly to say, he defeated the 6 other warring states and established the unified China under Qin. He also standardized the writing system, measuring system, axel of carts and currency. He built the great wall of China, the Linqu canal as well as many roads all across China. He reconstructed the political system which favoured the farmers instead of rich merchants. Therefore, i think he definitely deserves to be on this list. 漢高祖劉邦Gaozu of Han- LIubang on the other hand shouldn't be on this list as one of the great, I consider him to be a coward compared to his enemy 項羽Xiangyu, a sworn brother of his which he betrayed. After the war ended and 劉邦Gaozu of Han defeated 項羽Xiangyu he even allowed his wife to accuse 韓信Hanxin of treason and kill him (韓信Hanxin is the most important general that helped him win the war). Yes he treated people well but anyone can do that. The one thing i hate the most about him is that when Xiangyu captured LIubang's father forcing Liubang to surrender. Liubang told Xiangyu that since they are sworn brothers, if Xiangyu killed his dad it would be the same as killing Xiangyu's own dad. Being a honourable man Xiangyu was he let LIubang's dad go... According the the Chinese moral and ethical system, we should put the well being of our elders especially parents above all else, but Liubang risked the life of his own father just to win a war for me that is intolerable..

    • @K3nM3g
      @K3nM3g 6 лет назад +6

      Yes Qinshihuang. His way of ruling by dividing China into provinces instead of fiefdoms changed China forever. Up till now China and most countries are still using this system as a foundation

      Only qinshihuang can stop war at that time, cruel but can't count as tyranny
      About gaozu I'm sorry to say this
      But in my opinion Han dynasty is only a gift from xiangyu
      He even kill HanXin who help him to beat Xiangyu

    • @funplay3953
      @funplay3953 5 лет назад

      Qianlong should be on this list

    • @Tony-kj7ui
      @Tony-kj7ui 4 года назад +1

      Qin shi huang was not really that much of a tyrant compared to other rulers of the time its just that he adopted legalism which has harsh punishments in order to control the populace. Liu bang is indeed a scumbag not because of the reason you wrote tho. i call it political skill but what makes liu bang a scumbag is when he proposed a peace treaty to xiang yu then attacking him from behind while xiang yu was retreating home after the treaty. xiang yu is a legendary warrior he only lost because his wife was kidnapped and he chased after her and was trapped by 700,000 han soldiers. yet they still couldnt kill him only once he lost all his soldiers he slit his own throat. so yes liu bang is just a lucky scum bag and qin shi huang is made to look worse in order for liu bang to have legitimacy

    During that 130 years of Tang prosperity, Emperor Wu Zetian the only female emperor took over. She switched it to her dynasty briefly. It was fortunate she took over as her husband was crap. She continued that great trajectory and improved it. Had she left her husband and sons do it all the dynasty would have declined. Also that last in that run of good emperors, Xuanzhong wouldn't have been there. Although he crapped out halfway through his rule, he nevertheless did rule well up until that point. Wu Zetian should have passed the throne to her daughter. She might have done better but then again there might have been a civil war.

    Actually, the greatest emperor of ancient China is emperor Qin - the first emperor of China. He combined six nations as one and unified the Chinese characters, laws, education, political system, Architecture, measurement, and so many things.

    •  3 года назад +1

      Of course not. Zhao Zheng copied Zhou's "get off the same track today, read the same text and do the same Lun". However, there are still controversies over the fact that there are different human relations, different trains and the same track, and there are simply more than one kind of records,
      Moreover, there is no great unification, only one unification. The great unification has to go through the 14-year agricultural tax exemption policy of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty before it can be truly recognized by people all over the world. In ancient times, there was no Zhao Zheng in the top ten positions of emperors.

    The Chen Dynasty,
    @4:20 something, are you sure those were Han Dynasty painting? @9:46, if I am not mistaken, that was one of the several parts of a painting about the much-forgotten city of Kai Feng during the Sung Dynasty.

    I moved to Nanning a few months ago and I've watched several of your other videos about Chinese culture, but it's really hard to understand a culture without knowing its' history, so I really appreciate you doing this type of video, and because of it have now subscribed to your channel. If I may make one small suggestion though, slow down your presentation just a little bit. Your enthusiasm is contagious, and understandable, but it's really hard to keep up with all the information your present. :-) Other than that, really good presentation and choice of graphics. Keep up the good work!

    In my opinion, Emperor Hongzi of the Ming dynasty was the greatest emperor of China. It is a pity that no one thought about making drama about him. In every Chinese drama I watched, the emperors are completely unworthy. In all of China's history there was only one who could serve as a model example for the nation and has been omitted ....

    Good, cause I really like these videos :)
    Would be great if you guys could make little headers with the names of people or dynasties/years that stick through the whole time you are talking about them (preferably on the top left of the screen so it doesn't get blocked by captions or cards on mobile). It would help the content stick a little better to my brain :)

    Really fascinating thank you so much , Mike . I'm subscribed to your channel Beyond science but I only just found this one just now I really enjoyed it because I love history and I'm fascinated by the Orient . In a section of Dallas they have what is called Chinatown ( but it is not like a traditional Chinatown ) in an area called Richardson . They have a short Avenue in their parking lot of eight statues , 4r on each side facing each other , all from Chinese ancient history and at the beginning of them is Confucius , making the 9th statue. These monumental statues are impeccable.. and even more so at night where each one is illuminated from below , by a light turning every color of the rainbow... one of them is Emperor Wu . I'm really going to enjoy this series and if you have never read a book called The Last Empress ( by Seagrist ) this is an incredible well-researched story written by a man whose family has roots as Westerners in China This needs to be made into a miniseries because it's simply could not be packed into a movie unless the movie was done in a series .. but I wish everybody would read that book .. the descriptions are mind-blowing and some of them so beautiful that it's incredible the author was able to find the words ( regretfully some of them so horrendous that wants one has read them they cannot on read them such as the stories about the making of eunuchs ) . This is the kind of book a person cannot put down

    I learn from school Tang Taizong died because of injury on eye.
    At that moment, Tang was the strongest country in asia.So many countries (including Baekje ,silla(Korea) and japen)of Asia send him many tribute.
    But, Goguryeo(korea) was an exception.
    So Tang Taizong attacked Goguryeo and said " Send the tribute to us".
    So Goguryeo and Tang started war.
    At the and, the general of Goguryeo shoot an arrow to the eye of Taizong.
    Army of Tang start retreat.
    After war , Before his death he said like this: "Do not attack Goguryeo again.never"
    Each chinese history book said the reason of Tang Taizong's death differently.
    Some books says he died because of cold or some says because of illness.
    But many historian think Taizong was died because of injury during war with korea.
    Since chinese historian hide shamefull event, many true became closed by historian of china.
    The same is true for death of Tang Taizong.
    The yellow emperor of Tang died because of korean is shame to china.
    Thanks for reading!

      tang dynasty crushed korea in the end and subjugated it as part of its empire

    • @hobike44
      @hobike44 7 лет назад

      winsun wong There was three country in korea at that moment.
      Goguryeo,Baekje and Silla.
      Silla and Tang have team and start war with Goguryeo and Baekje.
      Baekje was doomed in 660.
      And Goguryeo doomed in 668.
      But Tang was started attacked Silla.
      So Silla have to take war with Tang again.
      Left people of Goguryeo and Baekje joined Silla's side.
      In 676, Tang retreat from korea and Silla have territory of Baekje and half or Goguryeo's.
      So actually, korea was not part of china.
      It was Silla's victory.
      And later in 698, the migrants of Goguryeo and Mohe people established Balhae.
      King of Balhae was the migrant of Goguryeo whose name was Dae jo-young.
      Some chinese say Dae jo-young was chinese but it is false.
      The letter which Balhae sent to Japen, King of Balhae describe him "King of Goryeo" and Goryeo is redused name of Goguryeo.
      Korea was never belonged to china in ancient times.
