Amazing interview! Among the many interesting points raised about silence, truth, etc., perhaps the most striking was Hernan Diaz's reminder that the "love of the form, love of the materials, love of tinkering" should be the reason for doing whatever it is we do. Especially grateful that you have shone a light on Ida Tarbell - an inspirational role model!
So much food for thought here; had to watch it twice. The paradox of astronomical wealth typically leading to self-seclusion and paranoia, as opposed to the unrestrained opportunity that most people anticipate, as well as the realization that "trust" is one of the most polysemic words in the English language - and as such highly susceptible to all kinds of manipulation and abuse - are two of the fundamental problems we're all dealing with, but are rarely addressed. Thanks again for sharing this thought provoking conversation.
So interesting! I love the kind of books that you don't truly understand until you've done your reasearches and went to forums to read other people's theories. That, to me, is a truly brilliant achievment in a book. As I was reading it, I was confused and I understood what I wanted to understand, what spoke to me more directly. Diaz really plays with that idea of trust and narratives and it's just UGH, brilliant (i'm lacking words here). Two intelligent people metting and talking is truly a delight to watch! Thankyou fo this!
Truth (and of course trust) is hidden in "silence" if behind silence we have freedom to feel totally relaxed in arms of the person not into or thinking how to break something so gentle like womans heart and trust. Approx. 9 months is one woman(our mother) investing time&... in us with trust that we are going to be trustfull person throughout our life. We don't have other option than to give our best.
Enjoyed this interview a lot and most of Service 95’s content which is so innovative. But since I live in Cairo I was super interested by the last issue of the magazine that features a comprehensive guide to Cairo which I found so incredibly misleading and representative of the La La Land in which the golden youth of current Egypt lives in. Kazuko and Reif as places to eat where the average meal costs at the very least 2000 Egyptian pounds which is basically one third of the average monthly wage??? And no Tahrir Museum in Arts and cultural places but the GEM which is not even really open ? And the Four Seasons or St Regis as 2 of the 5 places to stay???? (Marriott has the worst possible service in a supposedly 4 star hotel) The average night rate is 400$ with 95% of the population making less than half of that amount monthly. The designer who made that list needs a reality check.

Trust is power, and the powerful love to abuse it. You’re a modern day muckracker Demetri,, taking on today’s monopolists like Ida!
Christ!
Whoa - was not expecting this to be one of the most fascinating author conversations I’ve ever heard and that Dua Lipa is clearly rather brilliant.
Wait… Dua Lipa has a podcast?! What a pleasant surprise! Subscribed!
Fascinating interview. What you say about creativity and effort is spot on.
