  • Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek overshadow Panerai these days. It was not always the case. Panerai has lost some of its momentum with collectors over the last few years but i think that is going to change.I love the Panerai's I own. I have three and my wife has one.
    Today we are going to take a look at two of those watches. The Panerai Pam 61 and Pam 48, one at 44mm (Pam61) and the other the Pam48 at 40mm. A rare size for Panerai as most are 44-47mm. It's definitely time to re-appreciate Panerai. I love mine.

    I've got a PAM00104. I love wearing it on NATO straps. Even with my small wrists, it looks great! It always feels strange wearing my Speedmaster after wearing the Pam for a while. Both watches are keepers!

    FYI It’s Panerai that rhymes with die not day. The type of clasp/buckle on your wife’s watch is called a deployant not deployment. Okay rant over back to the video😁
    It’s not a good time to buy a new Panerai, these days they’re ridiculously overpriced and the grey and secondhand markets are saturated after a decade of overproduction. Around 2010 ETA lost their virtual monopoly on movement manufacturing for the Swiss watch industry and Panerai went to ValFleurier who makes movements for the other Richemont brands like Baume et Mercier and Mont Blanc for replacements. They started producing a wider range of watches in far greater numbers with arguably sub par proprietary movements that only they could obtain spare parts for bringing all servicing in house, charged a premium for them and now a decade later the brand is on its arse. They produce some nice watches still but they no longer represent value for money.
    But before 2010 back in the halcyon days of low production numbers and ubiquitous stalwart ETA movements there is unquestionably treasure still to be had at a decent price. The first decade under Richemont that fuelled the meteoric rise of Panerai had some absolutely stunning models that remain preeminent today. Look at any Paneristi group or forum and it’s these old models that still garner the most reverence and adoration. If you’re looking for the quintessential Panerai tool watch for your collection, look here.

    I compliment you for a very thoughtful video. I own a Panerai 00632 44mm which is a Luminor Marina with a tobacco dial and cream color baton markers and Arabic numerals and a seconds subdial. The movement is an ETA. I own more august watches but the PAM is a remarkably comfortable watch to live with and wear. I do think that PAM is under appreciated. Leaving aside status and cost, the PAM is much preferable to live with and wear than either my Yachtmaster or Ploprof 1200M. I have enough dream movements in my collection so base PAM movements are fine with me. If I were to get another PAM, I would go for one of the base Radiomirs. I usually change watches daily and sometimes more except when traveling. I often choose the PAM to take on trips and happily wear it for two weeks at a time. I like the PAM Luminor Submersibles but I have not been compelled to add one to my collection. I am not overly impressed nor attracted by the PAM marketing campaigns which currently feature a picture of the Luna Rosa rising out of the waves alongside a racing sailboat. I think that PAM needs to direct its marketing at the 3 or 4 basic reasons why PAM is a watch worth knowing about and owning. People like you who own PAMs love them. That is what I concluded after processing all the anti-PAM propaganda coming from non-owners. Thank you.

    • @MichaelBath
      @MichaelBath  4 года назад +2

      Cheers. Yes, i like the Radiomirs but really like the California dial - PAM424. Well priced and a special dial in my opinion. I know most buyers prefer the Pam 249 but for me the non limited edition is the one. 👍

    Not sure who bothered to thumb this down. A perfectly valid premise and video.
    I’ve been a collector for about 24 years, and have owned multiple Pams, along with Rolex, Audemars, Patek, Cartier, IWC, Journe and others.
    I only own one Pam now, the pre-Vendome 2A. The others are long gone. But the 2A gets regular wrist time and is a lot of fun.
    Thanks for sharing your own history with Panerai.

    I've always struggled to see where the value is in this brand, it comes on leather or rubber straps that cost next to nothing to produce that's half the watch spoken for then it has ETA movements which obviously cost far less than an in house movement, then they have non intrecate dials (flat & printed) no wounder they are so easy to clone. I'am refering to the older models.

    • @4120306
      @4120306 3 года назад

      I don't think I'd buy it if its price point makes it acceptable for everyone.
      We must understand that price is never solely based on production cost (unless you are selling commodities). Because if it is then I could surely claim that ALL luxury watches are overpriced.

    • @markkriger
      @markkriger 3 года назад

      I also cannot justify it's price. Especially if I compare it to the new Seamaster which I like very much - for a price of a used PAM I can get a new Seamaster 300m (steel), with a far better movement, great bracelet with micro adjustment, great brand and legacy....

    • @dakotaxu4792
      @dakotaxu4792 2 года назад

      There are in house movements that are not necessarily better than ETA movements. ETA movements are designed to do the job and perform well for decades upon decades

    Thank you for you interesting a rather impartial genuine review of a truly underappreciated brand. The ROLEX movements date back to the late 1930's, so it's been a while yet both brands' histories are forever intertwined.

    I agree with you. I have a PAM632 and a very similar to your wife’s only blue dial, a PAM119. I love the brand and it’s a watc 16:54 you don’t see that much on everyone, it’s got a unique look, not your average watch. I love the vintage look and their history. I’m looking at a Radiomir now. Panerai needs to keep prices steady and revamp their entry level models. The snap back cases really irked panerai collectors. Also, the fakes are too good. Crack down on that shit. Enough panerai.

  • @louisnguyen2865

    Thanks for the neat video of 2 cool Panerais. If I may ask, what were the reason(s) to have your Panerai serviced? Did it need the service? I ask because I've seen some watches still run great without service (i.e. Omegas and Rolex)

    • @MichaelBath
      @MichaelBath  4 года назад

      The Pam91 not in the video, the rotor seized. Lubricants dry out basically. The PAM61 is quite reliable being manual wind. From memory it was the spring, so no tension and unable to wind. I guess with any watch service whether it be Panerai, or Rolex they take apart the movement clean the parts and check the accuracy and replace seals etc so the watch keeps water tight. In saying that my 2 vintage Omegas, manual wind have never been serviced in 20 years. But i am going to probably send the Omega Flightmaster to Switzerland to have a semi restoration done on it. Cheers

    • @Andy220566
      @Andy220566 4 года назад

      Mechanically they may be sound but regular servicing isn’t just about that. Arguably its most important role of a service is the replacements of the seals and gaskets that ensure the watch maintains its water resistance because no matter how good it is if water gets into the case it’s pretty much game over for that movement. So luxury watches need to be serviced roughly every five years regardless of their mechanical condition.
