I can see the inspiration from Tim Follin:
The 6/8 part at 1:48 reminds me a lot of Solstice's title theme music.
3:18 has an atmospheric vibe similar to Equinox's, this happens again at 4:15.

When you slow down that “droplet-like” sample that you’re mentioning it sounds like a vibraphone, so it’s probably just the sound of a vibraphone sped up. Hope that answers your question! (Also sorry late comment)

BE WARNED that it is very difficult towards the end, like it makes Kaizo 1 look like a mild difficulty boost once you reach postgame. Use save states, or just watch an LP.
