    Hey all, here's a special one. a printer you've probably never heard of. The company behind this product have specialised for years in Industrial scale 3D printing for Dental and prosthetics.
    And now they are entering the consumer space with the UltraCraft Reflex.
    Using this printer I took on a commission job of 3D printing the official prototype models for Wargames Atlantic's The Damned Campaign in partnership with MiniWargaming gamefound.com/.... It was as simple as loading the files into the slicer. let the slicer do all the supporting, and click print. So this gives you production quality in minutes, with no need to mess around with settings or temperature, or test prints.
    So if you are looking for 3D printing in "Easy Mode". Check this one out. (Full Review coming when I get hands-on with a production unit)

    I work in a dental lab in the 3d print department and we use their printers. That service you got is how they handle everyone. They are super hands on and very knowledgeable. @@benburke9355Hey! Dental lab guy here too in metro Atlanta. We have Heygears printers at our lab too, which I run. We have three A2D’s and one A3D. They are all really awesome printers and great customer service. We have a ton of models to print all the time so the A3D really saves the day for its continuous printing where it can cycle itself after each job and start a new job. Without it, it would be very difficult to keep up. I usually nest about 12 to 14 hours worth of jobs for the overnight printing and then it’s ready the next day when I come in.

    Proprietary resin bottles is a sure way to monopolize these prices. This is 2D printing all over again!

    • @Bardghost_Isu
      @Bardghost_Isu Год назад +20

      Yep, I just had a look at their website.
      The PAT10 (Clear resin) is £48 on offer (Normally £70)
      The PAU10 (ABS like) is the same pricing.
      The CMYK set (Sold as a bundle of 5 bottles, not individually) is £241 on offer ( Normally £354)
      Each bottle is the standard 1000g of other bottles on the market when not on sale in the UK (Can't speak for US regional pricing), so we are talking double the price, Its already showing the proprietary bollocks that is standard play in the 2d printer sphere.
      Only possible saving grace is if someone dumps current market priced ABS-like resins into those bottles and finds a way to get it to print successfully with them.

    • @jtrain9926
      @jtrain9926 Год назад +5

      Yeah but once you use up a bottle of their resin what's stopping you from filling it up with clearance Sirayatech or something? Sure it wont have the settings in the application but I bet you can set that stuff up manually

    • @Bardghost_Isu
      @Bardghost_Isu Год назад +7

      @@jtrain9926 that would be my hope, even if you can't adjust the settings, I'm sure someone out there figures out a product or mixture of products that matches closely enough to not need adjusting.
      As long as they don't fully seal up the bottles and put RFID tags that get triggered as empty so the bottle can't be reused on them there will be some ways to defeat it.

    • @K8Stuff
      @K8Stuff Год назад +3

      @@Bardghost_IsuI don’t think they’ll go that way because the CYMK set for example is meant to be open and mixed etc so I don’t see why you couldn’t put other stuff in. • @thegraymarquis349
    @thegraymarquis349 Год назад +39

    Thanks for all the informative and quality content you create.
    At $1,800 - 2,500 I think this platform is way overpriced for what it offers. There are some cool features with the printer (wireless printing, heated resin vat, auto-leveling, etc.) but many of those are beginning to make their way into mainstream printers. For a fraction of the total cost, someone could buy a top of the line consumer printer, wash & cure, and all the consumables from another brand. HeyGears price tag doesn't even include resin.
    The wash station feels like a gimmick. Unless the shaking provides demonstrably better results, it’s just more parts to break, will vibrate your workspace, and potentially damage prints by tossing them around. Wash and cure stations from other manufacturers all include a metal basket so you don’t need to dunk your hand in the IPA and smaller parts can be put in a sonic cleaner basket ($5 - 10 on Amazon for a set). There’s also the very real spill risk from user error or a worn-out seal. The one possible saving grace would be if there was a filter that could pull out the resin particulates from the draining IPA.
    The proprietary slicer and resin are a big red flag. This screams printer ink 2.0. I would be wary of pricing (current and future), availability, and door-to-door shipping time. Most resin manufactures already have resin profiles you can import or manually input into a slicer, so having them preloaded really isn’t a game changer. People have had issues with resin bottle caps cracking; I would hate for that to happen when the bottle is attached to the top of my printer…
    33um is nothing to write home about and it seems odd to spend >$1K for a printer that has worse results than currently available ~$400 printers.
    Customer service is huge. But I can’t imagine the average consumer would receive the same white glove treatment as a popular YTer that they sent their product to for free in return for a review (albeit upaid).
    If I were going to take a risk on a new entry into the 3D printing space, I would buy from Athena. Their printer has all the best features as this one at a fraction of the cost AND is designed for future upgradability while HeyGears is clearly designed to lock you into their ecosystem.
    The big appeal seems to be an “all in one” solution with little tinkering required - but all of that depends on how well all the components (slicer, printer, wash & cure, etc.) perform once they hit mass market.
    I am excited to see new players entering 3D resin printing and upping the ante both in features and build quality. I hope this forces existing big players to begin adding these QoL features into their products.

    Seems similar to Formlabs. Price is a little cheaper than the Form3, hopefully resin is cheaper than Formlabs $150 to $250 per liter. Formlabs software has one touch printing also where it auto arranges and does all the settings based on their resin. A lot of their resins require heated curing at 60 to 80 degrees C to get the full potential out of the material. I just got a Form 2 and have been learning about it....we will see how well it works because it was kind of used and abused 😆. Already dismantled it, cleaned spilt resin off some internal electronics....broke it, fixed it a little, broke it some more and then finally got it working. This past 5 hrs has been a rollercoaster for me haha

    Formlabs has already done this -- ages ago, not sure how this is revolutionary, it's just based on msla, not sla. You pay for a closed ecosystem and it just works. I have a form3, it just works, at a price. It aint cheap. Question is how much do you want to pay for the "just works" experience. I've not had a failed print on my form3 ever, only prints I've had to re-print are when I've intentionally re-oriented a part against the PreForm slicer objections.

    Hi there! I love your channel. But, can I STRONGLY disagree about resolution? 😆You already showed in your videos that when you have big voxels, when you paint the result is quite different than when the voxels are tiny or well anti-aliased. I agree that under 35 microns you need a microscope... BUT the texture and appearance of the surfaces changes A LOT and can be noticed at naked eye when we go to 20 microns.
    By the way, I agree with you about ACF films: it seems to be blurring and introducing an unintended "texture" to everything.

    • @FauxHammer
      @FauxHammer  Год назад

      You aren't wrong in principle, but even on those smaller micron printers like the Mini 8k with it's 22 micron prints, you need to enable Antiailiasing x2 and image blur x2 to remove all voxel and layer lines.
      When you do the same on a sub 35 micron printer, it also removes all voxel and layer lines.
      So there's a slight reduction in sharpness on the larger micron printers, but I'd challenge anyone to realistically see it.

Still looks like a great machine but I think many will get it, use a bottle of their resin, then re-use the bottle with less expensive aftermarket resins. At least the people who can't justify spending that kind of money for resin.

    In one of those weird synchronicity things that makes people think fate is real, I was just thinking "I wonder if there's a resin equivalent to Bambu out there?"
    This certainly fits the bill. But... there's one big difference: if I use my X1C with Bambu's own filament, there's no fiddling about with settings. That's similar to HeyGears approach here. *BUT*. I can put any spool I want to on the X1C. Sure, I need to do a little testing when I first start a new type of filament to get the settings perfect, but that only needs to be done once. And so I can go with generic filament for almost half the cost, rather than being tied into Bambu's branded supply.
    It doesn't seem like that's an option here. And yes, I realise there's a hazmat issue with printing resin and the proprietary bottle-becomes-feed-system really helps minimise that issue. But it still stands out as a big deal. Having the *choice* to get the high quality branded supplies when it suits me or to use the lower-cost generic stuff when that's good enough is an important factor in evaluating something like this.
    I don't mind being in some walled gardens. Bambu has done a good job of making their slicer and so forth just a little smoother and easier to use while still giving me the option to go to, say, Prusa if there's a problem. Knowing that I can (mostly) leave the garden if I need to makes me much more comfortable just sitting inside it. HeyGears doesn't seem to offer those options. Granted that this is probably out of my budget even if it was absolutely perfect; but I'd be more willing to consider it if there was an option to use anyone's resin, and a way to use any slicer.

This machine does look fantastic, but at almost £2,000 its beyond the scope of what I can buy for hobbying. This is good for the 3D printing industry though, more competition and better quality and features is going to keep driving the industry forward, and the top features will eventually be found in all price ranges of machines. Exciting times!

It's a touch similar to the Athena? that has the same lift top and so I wonder if they are related in any way. This is a no-go price for the "it just works" general populace. Honestly, I think it needs to be 1000-1250 in order to attract people. it's 1750 for the whole kit for me. That and I'll have to pay a premium for their resin unless they allow people to use those bottles for other resins. I would rather them reduce the cost of the unit and make up the money on the resin or vice versa. It's GREAT innovation, but at that price, I'll have to wait until others do it.

Yes I know I'm saying this and I've just bought a Saturn 3, but that was on offer and I had to save up for it. Good review though as usual. I do agree with the lid comment though, I have got to find somewhere to put the Saturn where I can also lift the lid off. If you didn't know, the Saturn's height is 567.3 mm. That's over half a meter! But I pretty much have to add that again for taking the lid off. Doors are definitely a better idea.

    Great concept, hugely expensive to own and operate. I hate to think about the cost of parts, these styles of machine with force sensor technology is definitely the future. It’s easy to rave about support when a company is in its development stage of a product, but from personal experience in the past that support either becomes a paid for service or evaporates away like it never happened. With this company trying to break into the home hobbyist market from a pure business oriented product line, expect costs to shoot up, you’ll probably get good after sales service for the first year with limitations and then upgrade paths for better service and support at a price.

    Funny story about the 'future of 3D printing'. A few months ago I got serious about working up my ultimate 3D resin printer that does full color, and along the way I found method to convert most ball screw-style printers to negate all peel force and print almost in real time; my R&D test mule went from a full plate 98mm tall print that was doing 9hrs and 38 minutes to 34 minutes. Best part, all it cost me was a bit of time and about $100 in materials. I haven't gotten deep enough to see how fast it's going to burn out a screen, but I suspect it will need a stack of them in the near future.

      @@Cw99612 Normally I'd guard my prototypes rather zealously, but I'd rather pursue other variations so if you know someone who can help, it wasn't too difficult. You need a base printer with a very stout UV source, collimated lens and a reasonably accurate LCD screen. Basically you're going to invert the whole machine and lower the printer arm into a large container of resin, printing almost continuously on the surface of the resin (essentially the upper most layer of your part) as the platform lowers. Syncing up the platform to the exposure rate was the interesting part but totally doable. Also becomes paramount to design parts with the assumption that they will need to vent inverted of normal.
      I suspect this is why DLP printers exist, but for the lack of over 2k resolution and larger print plates, I stuck with an LCD screen, as much as I loath their fallible life cycles.

    • @cgooch_
      @cgooch_ Год назад

      @@C-M-Eif you’ve got an effective prototype, you should chase this as there’s likely some ways to optimize the final product. Bottom up printers are convenient in terms of cost and reliability but if you can use the same equipment for a top down machine that’s just as good and prints significantly faster, I think you’d have a marketable product. Personally I prefer top down machines but they generally cost 4 to 5 figures on the low end…
      The alternative would be to try and pitch the idea to a company who’s got capital and is willing to contract things out with you but that’s rather risky territory.

    Even the pre-sale prices are absolutely bonkers, but the care that they put into their machines, resins, and customer support seems pretty evident. I do chafe pretty hard at the closed resin ecosystem - but I also don't see anything mechanical that would prevent you from refilling one of those well-designed resin bottles with something of your own...the only catch would be if the slicer couldn't be trained to work with 3rd-party materials.
    Ultimately, I'm going to stick with the poor-friendly resin printing equipment I already have (Phrozen Sonic Mini 4K and Anycubic Wash & Cure station). However, if I won the lottery I'd consider giving this a closer look.

    Are you able to refill the proprietary bottles and use custom settings for third party resins? Or are they locked in with an RFID chip (or somethimg like that) like other proprietary resin printers? Looks like an MSLA Formlabs clone without much innovation in comparison, and at a similarly high (albeit much lower) price point that most hobbyists won't be able to justify.
    The whole 3D printing ecosystem sounds great, but the question remains - how closed off is it? If the cheapest resin you can buy is £100/L it's just not affordable for the vast majority of consumers. Or if the company goes under, or stops supporting that model of printer, so you can effectively no longer use it. If they released an open source resin bottle that you could alter the parameters of that would be great, but I that seems to go against what they're trying to push with this.
    That being said, it's good that Formlabs have some competition. But the closed system is really not the direction I think 3D printing should head, and having worked with similar machines in the past, the price difference is mainly for the cosmetic appearance/'ecosystem', rather than the functionality.

    maybe the wifi is for further integration too - to like connect to a camera and show progress or like control and such from out of the room, or if like a power outage is detected it can send you a message and when power is then re-detected (since the 'on' unit would be off - then power restored, and power comes back on) - can alert again, and allow you to resume or something? I dunno but I like that it has the options, even if they don't come to be, over being stripped down to the basics like other companies do.
    machine is great, but out of price range for most I think, especially for the actual build volume. (198x123x220 height) its a bit smaller than current printers are doing, but who knows.
    I do love the resin bottle ideas as well, but most of the tweaking and auto settings limit you to their resin (as most resins don't tell you their compounds in great enough detail to compile a list of exposure settings to use for 'your' machine) but it also opens the door to some monopolization of prices on them. I mean, you only need "1 bottle" and just fill it with whatever you want to print - but at the same time, it's just a bad feeling thanks to previous companies all doing similar things to exploit and greed. (Apple I am lookin at you, same with you HP printers)

    Had 1 BIG question... could not find the answer on their site (I'm prob blind ). Is this a LCD or DLP printer? I'd guess DLP as nowhere did they mention 4K, 6K, 12K etc.

      It’s LCD. They haven’t listed the K because it’s not a comparable metric. Compare the pixel size

    So it's basically the same ideology behind Formlabs? Proprietary "engineered" resins, a reskin of PreForm, and a "just works" claim for a moderate to high price for the average consumer? Now I think this is a better deal than something like the Form 3 for the average person but I don't think it's the solution to someone tinkering with wanting to print some minis. This to me strikes that prosumer territory where you're trying to monetize your hobby.
    Edit: So it looks like the presale price of just the printer is $980 USD so in line with something like the Anycubic M3 Max. So while I still don't like proprietary resins it's not as bad as I originally thought.

      I agree with this point for this printer: trying to monetize the hobby
