    The lesson I learned with my Ender 3 was that I HATE calibration. It reminded me of the guys in High School that spent more time working in their cars than driving them.
    That’s why I got a Bambu X1c. I just want to print stuff. The first time.
    I have an Elegoo Mars 3 that sits unused because I can’t figure out what’s wrong with it and I don’t have time to get a degree in additive manufacturing or chemistry just for my hobby.
    I just want to design things on my pc and have a machine make it real. Period! I have no time or inclination to d1ck around with it.
    Thank you SO MUCH for this video. $1200 seems like a lot. But Ive wasred $600 just trying to get my $300 printer to make a thing.
    I want this. I’m glad you made this despite the hate you received.

      Absolutely agree. When I started 3D printing, I got the original ender 3, believing I was saving money and could learn the ends and outs of the machine. When I realized I needed something that was plug and print when My Gf stated "you spend more time building and modifying it then printing" I sold it at that point and got the ender S1 Pro and then the Bambu X1 and have never really had a problem since.
      Made the same mistake when I got into resin printing got a cheaper anycubic and the problems that thing caused me I could rage about all day. I got rid of that and got the GKtwo thanks to this and other channels. In short Faux knows what he is talking about.
      Hey Gears is costly but honestly, it really does seem Plug and play. Based off my experience the machine seems worth it and I will be following it closely. And yeah, the System is locked into its own stuff, but ask yourself, if you knew your print was going to come out perfect every time you made something, is it even worth using other materials and print failure, wasted resin, clean up and the like?
      Either way if you don't like the machine, dislike the machine, don't hate the messenger. Honestly, without this channel and others like it would any of us be into this craft at all? Faux, you're doing a great job

      @@FauxHammer I _have_ the pro-background, and I agree most consumer printers of the "Frozen AnyGoo" types are utter 💩, even on a good day.
      But, this Heygears Reflex RS printer seems very primo, a beginner will love it because "it just works" and a pro will love it out of appreciation of how good it is. The cost is worth it if one's time isn't worthless 🙂
      No problem at all with your videos on these HeyGears printers, too bad you don't like Voxeldance Tango, if you got over your Tango complex, you could get similar superior autosupport results on your other printers that you have as the HeyGears gets with BluePrint slicer.
      With the pre-sale price, the Heygears Reflex RS is way more worth it than the "Revo", not even in the same league.

    Honestly? If I was running a print farm where resin printing was part of the service (or I was making decent money from my printers) then this would be the go to choice. The time saved from mucking around with getting the resin dialled in, the supports right and so on would more than make up for the extra cost and propriety resin to be able to just, to quote, drag, drop, go.
    To know that the print will come out bang on and with the turn around time being shorter (due to the previously mentioned faffing around) means the client/customer gets their print at the highest quality in the shortest turn around which means time saved=money saved=more prints=more money made... and the price isn't anywhere near as bad as I was expecting either (even the full, non discounted pre-order price).

    I don’t mind proprietary resin AT ALL if it’s affordable and leads to better results/ease of use. My Saturn 4 Ultra died after a month (user error, overfilling->tons of leakage through tilting vat). Everyone needs to understand that there are plenty of people that don’t know what exposure settings even are but just want to 3D print, and this seems like the perfect printer for that. Sure an open system would be nice, but only for those that are enthusiasts and know a lot about 3D printing and how to dial in resin, which let’s be honest here that’s not the majority of people and it never will be. After owning sonic mini 8k, Saturn 4 ultra, mars 5 ultra (all very impressive printers that I loved), I just received the Reflex (non-RS) and right out of the box you can tell the build quality is absolutely next level. This is not a toy, this is a machine I trust to be used by my employees at my dental clinic that know nothing about 3D printing (unlike all the others I’ve owned before)

    If they want to guarantee and support perfection in printing with their machines with proprietary resin, more power to them. But that doesn't mean the machine needs to be locked down to their resin. I doubt they claim that other resins will damage the machine in some way that would prevent their resins from working again. So no problem. They can say "this is out of the box, hands down, the best prosumer resin printer system when used with our resins. With other resins, YMMV and don't call us." This would solve everyone's issues, and still sell tons of their resin if it's really that good and that easy.
    If they say no to this, then it means just one thing: they want to get their money selling you overpriced, and yes, I mean overpriced, resin. Period. Same as the inkjet printer makers. And they deserve, in that case, to be called out, and to have an industry built up around jailbreaking their resin system.

    • @dariansutton5503
      @dariansutton5503 9 дней назад

      They can’t just say don’t call us with other resins. People will still call and say “I’m using a good resin, your machine is crap.” No one fact checks consumer reviews.
      They would need a way to validate what resin was used.

    • @jaym2381
      @jaym2381 9 дней назад

      They don't say it will damage/destroy your printer, they do say they don't support other resins, which means just that. Don't try to use the fault ticket system if your print doesn't come out OK, because they simply won't help - and have no obligation to do so. The cat is already out of the bag that other resins work fine, and they haven't stopped providing review equipment to the reviewer that tested that (the opposite, in fact). Don't expect them to go announcing it though. Why should they?

    Thanks again Ross for another great review. This is exactly what I want, a drag and drop resin printer system. I currently print FDM after my friends started printing, I got the bambu lab x1 carbon based on your videos. That was a great decision, as the quality of my prints are so good compared to my friends that they have stopped FDM printing them selves and I print there stuff for them. The people commenting on all of the locked aspects of these systems don’t see the point of these aspects saves time, as you know the quality and standards you’re going to get before you start the print. I know some people like the journey of the print set up, but for me I got into printing because I liked producing stuff, and now I want to print minis. So for me a locked system that guarantees quality, and allows me to enjoy the prints more and not have to waste time and material trying to get something to work is the perfect solution. As from my view point I’m buying the time to enjoy my prints, which I guarantee over 1-2 years for printing time with this machine will save me money from not wasting material on failed prints, the headaches of calibration, and disappointment of random failures.

    I would think the answer to proprietary resin is simply to compile a public list of third-party resin that is less expensive and works in the machine and produces similar results as the proprietary resin. When users use those resins instead and Hey Gears loses money on resin, they'll either lower prices or open up their ecosystem to certified vendors. The question is whether the hardware and software elements are that much better, that it's worth making that effort. The only retort to that I can think of is that the Hey Gears user-base is very specific, and the cost of resin isn't a factor to them, making it a moot point.

  • @meadmaker4525
    @meadmaker4525 8 дней назад +10

    As someone who does not own a resin printer, and therefore have no bias one way or another, I can completely understand Hey Gears wanting to use only proprietary resin in their printers. It allows them to control the quality of the printed product to the nth degree, which is clearly what matters to them the most. Quality. Full stop. If they open it up to other resins, print quality will likely suffer, thus making their equipment seem inferior/flawed to those who don't understand it's likely down to the cheap or poorly tuned resin they were using.
    On the other hand, I completely understand the fear of spending a ton of money on a fantastic printer that only uses proprietary resin, which may be a lot more expensive than other resins on the market, and which may at any point become forever unavailable if Hey Gears goes under (yes, I know, they won't) or chooses to stop doing these printers for one reason or another, leaving you with an expensive, useless brick on your bench.
    Both arguments make sense. I guess it comes down to whether or not you've got enough money to either not care or blindly trust that, when you buy this Hey Gears printer, the 2nd argument will just never become reality. And if that's the case, then the whole thing is moot and all that's left is to maybe whinge about the cost of the resin, but if you've spent that much money on the printer and its accessories, you likely don't care about that either.
    I mean, the detail on that Hey Gears printer is INSANE!! So, if you want/need that, then you pay the cost of entry to get it and you pay for their resin and you enjoy it. It clearly seems to be the Bambu X1C of resin printers. Just simple-stupid to use, with fantastic results every single time. For everyone else, there are really, really good resin printers out there that don't use proprietary resin.
    Why argue beyond that?

    No Fuzz printing, like getting popular in FDM, is very welcoming! It makes the audience broader and as long as the resin is within reason to high quality resins like Sirayatech I really do not care. The risk is they start get greedy BUT all printer makers have had their products challenged by 3rd party replacements, I cannot see any issues refilling bottles. My Saturn 2 will work for many years more but I want easier and higher quality and faster slicing/removal of support.

    What was their reasoning for making the RS a 405nm wavelength machine to also keep the resin proprietary? Seems odd change to the industry standard wavelength, not make it compatible with their entire line of resins and keep it a locked down system. I thought one of the main reasons for the proprietary resin on the OG Reflex was the 385nm wavelength. Does this open up the RS to be more compatible with other resins?
    I don't have an issue with proprietary resins when ease of use is a benefit, but the lack of printing options is something to consider. You can print in your favorite color, as long as that color is Pale Purple. Grey also being an option for near 2x the price.. Wax, colors and transparent resins seem to be missing from the RS menu.

    Not hate just being somewhat realistic. They can offer the assistant service for their resin only, they have no resin for things like action figures etc. So this printer is not even useable for me. I read one resin on their site that seemed useable but the price for 1k to try it and find out it isn't useable is just too high. The price of their resins are higher then Resione. Just a thought buy resione resins, download their chitu settings for your printer and hit print. The only time I have gotten a fail was my own supporting screw up. Ok to be fair I had a fail with my saturn 4 ultra, but Elegoo support helped me out with that fail.
    I understand they cannot control other companies resin but Bambu got it right, its plug and print with their own filament but the printer and slicer still has a generic option. If Bambu does not offer their filament in the colors or type I need, the printer is not a desk weight.
    This might be the ultimate printer for wargaming minis but it would seem to stop there. Add that each resin bottle is higher then the cost of a Warhammer squad, it makes you wonder if its worth the investment.

If I was asked to advise a printer for a library school or printer farm then this will be it. Time and reliability paired with quality beats the odds in those settings. Just figure having to support (and removal), tuning in the printer to the resin. And next batch of resin reacts differently, you just wasted all that time. Disappointed customers and labor costs. Probably makes more sense if Id put Saturn 3 like I was meant to. First one happened within a few weeks. Can't think of anything specifically that caused it, could have been user/warranty issue but I just went ahead and bought a new one. Second one was the better part of a year later, some hardened resin I missed in the tank causing a crack on an attempted print. Third was a few weeks ago, I installed an LCD that was already slightly cracked on arrival and stopped working within a week of normal use.
      Dunno if I just had a bad luck with a dud machine as other haven't been that bad. But that thing would lose its zero constantly. Plus the sheer effort it would take to get the tank off because of the bolt issue. Making rezeroing after every 2 prints, real fun…. This is the bit where I clearly haven’t communicated this well enough and it’s what I said on my livestream last night and why I want to make another video about the resin.
      If you could touch this and see it in action. You would understand instantly why this is about 3x the cost of a Saturn.
      But the fact that other people have shown you can just any resin in this and it dynamically compensates lift and retract speeds to ensure success every time. Rather than relying on the user to dial it in is just one example of what this does that nobody else comes close to

      Their cheapest resin is $35 a bottle. PAS10, which is the same as PARP10, a resin so good I made a video about it. Love that stuff.
      But also, you can use your own resin as Greedy3D and RisingApe have proved.

    nice video, always a happy to support on patreon, never thought you sold yourself and yes the printer is nice BUT the "promise" of easy and stable prints and all auto-support is just bullshit marketing talk. open up to other slicers and resins would minimize their resin sells bc people know its not a great resin just a regular one. imo you have a choice between easy, fast stable but high resin price (for the industrie and printfarms) on the one hand and perfect minimalistic but slower supports and cheaper resin (hobby) on the other. for me i'd love to have their nice well build machine and the opportunity to use my goto resin mix and my own supports. i just guess they will not open completely to the hobby market bc a huge part of their business is a complete solution like 2D printer companies...

      I promise you, their promise of easy prints is not just marketing talk. If I have not shown it well enough. You’d understand just by using this how much easier it is and how inviting it is to keep going back to print another thing

      @@FauxHammer i def got you, maybe I haven't made my point well. i don't consider "easy and stable prints" marketing bullshit but that this is the actual reason for not providing the freedom to use the slicer and resin we want. like any other company they don't care about the customer and the perfect solution but their profit and it is clear to me that they see more value in gatekeeping and selling only their resin than in selling more printers. thats why i compared it to 2D printing. the real profit isn't in the printer but in the resin/ink

      Really? because I saw some serious bias going on in this video, particularly when it comes to the lack of a resin vat heater coming standard with a $1000 printer. He called out the Saturn 4 Ultra for it which is less than half the cost but Heygears gets a free pass. Oh, also he mentioned "Honesty" as something this company is known for when they lie on their own marketing literature about the wavelength of their lighting systems(Fun Fact: the Reflex is not 385nm, closer to 405 actually than it is to 385). That aside, it looks like it is a great product and they are learning from what Bambu is doing in the FDM space. I just dont think they should be purposefully preventing you from dialing in your own resins at your own risk. If their slicer wont work, then disable the auto-support function when using third-party resins, but dont make it impossible to do so. If Heygears goes out of business, jacks their prices up, or discontinues the resin you rely on, you are screwed. I personally wont give a company leverage over me on proprietary consumables, they will eventually take advantage of you because they can.

    Ross, i think you slightly buried the lede on this video. Heygears' system didn't really click for me until literally the last minute. They're industrial manufacturers? Of course! Tight integration for maximum efficiency and performance is the norm with industrial machinery. I dabble with 3D printing, but professionally I work in traditional printing (laser, wide-format signage, etc.). All of our machines use proprietary materials, whether it's liquid ink, powder toner or repair parts. But the thing is, they all just work. Load it, hit continue, and keep working, because downtime is the profit-killer, not proprietary parts. That's Heygears' business model. I completely get the antipathy toward it, but i now really understand where Heygears are coming from, too.

    • @FauxHammer
      @FauxHammer  7 дней назад

      Yep, that’s exactly right. But I have nothing industrial to compare to. It’s a different leave to the rest. But in the consumer space it’s in its own.

    I feel like I'm very well within in their target audience, the price is far better than I expected and I'd happily pay for something made by people who put this much care into their product, but I'm also quite opposed to some of their practices (the lack of resin choice, the always-online requirement of their slicer that sends every action to their servers, the silly attempt to lock the sliced output files.. and that's just the bits i know about!) and have disliked the responses they give about them online. :) Fortunately they don't ship to my country so I don't have to concern myself about which would win out. Looks like another great, high quality printer anyway!

    I could never afford this printer but I have no problem with proprietary resin. If the prints work and you get consistently successful prints then the resin has paid for itself. I would say on average 1/4 to 1/3 of my resin goes to failed prints even when fully supported so I'm completely on board with this.

      Siraya Tech Fast ABS-Like is anywhere from $28 to 36 (rounded up) for 1 kg. Using his above numbers over lost resin you are looking at .250 to .333 Kg lost which amounts to for every 3 to 4 kgs you have basically lost 1 bottle. So you get anywhere from 2 to 3 kgs of printed models with supports. At 2kg this cost you $84 for 3kg it’s $112 at $28. At $36 it’s $108 to $144. Let’s say on Heygear all prints are good at 2 kg for PRAPR10 at $45 a bottle that’s $90 for a better print for the 3 kg it’s $135 it less than 4 bottles of good prints with Siraya Tech. The quality is on the high end do to the X factor of you using a more commercial and consistent printer. So if you print a lot and are buying there resin you should come out with either a savings or break even. Note I use Sunlu resin so where I would come out reducing cost and time is over the support due the size and removing the supports. I love my GKTWO but there times when the Sunlu resin is just not up to par so I’ve got wasted resin.
