not sure about the desire behind this video, and what factors went into the completed project. but, when you do work on cultural pieces outside of your own, you do need to do a fair amount of research so the viewers can see that you at least made an effort to do things correctly. some here were saying basically that effort was made, but i can see that the work was done with more of an "i saw it in movies" kind of thing, verses "i did a few days of research and did my best with the materials i could afford" kind of thing. how the (ray skin) was applied, and then the wrapping shows just how little thought he put into it. it looked like how i did it when i was a kid trying to make a samurai sword...which was okay by a child's standard. i've seen knives being restored, and made, with much more thought. all this together shows he doesnt really understand that japanese swords are prized possessions, instead of just something a metal worker thought would tickle his fancy. by his standard, it probably came out very good, which i respect. but, he broke a lot of hearts working on something more sacred than he realizes. take it with a grain of salt. we've all been there wanting to try something. props for that, of course. but, it is valuable to do more research about things you have little to no experience in. looking at his effort, and ability, you can tell he can create a much better result. perhaps, he just didn't have the time. just a note. perhaps he knows the blade is not authentic, so he treated it that way. as far as polishing to mirror finish goes, it's extremely important, as doing so better seals the surface against oxidation. so, yes, fine polishing is important in the life value of a fine piece.
I can only hope that this was ether A. A cheap knockoff katana or B. A relic found on a field from ww2. Because I am a martial artist and a practitioner of the way of the katana. For someone to willingly and knowingly let there Katana get to the state it was in the beginning of this video is an outrage. If you can’t or don’t know how to care for the sword don’t own it. In Japanese belief the katana is the heart and soul of the samurai it was cared for above everything else in a samurai’s life and was with him till his death. It’s great you brought this one back I hope you won’t let it get to that condition in the future.
I did not see a makers signature on the tange, so I believe it is safe to say that it was either a cheap knockoff (possibly made in China) or a WW2 officers sword that was somewhat mass produced.
@@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 that is very true. Only the absolute top sword smith in Japan put there signatures on the tang so. I say again I hope this was not a true real Katana if it was I would be heartbroken.
I was so glad this isn’t a real japanese blade, not even a cheap WW2 blade. The fact is has no markings on it and a bo-hi on one side off the blade with a rounded edge is enough for me to tell for sure, this wasn’t a real japanese blade, and never will it be!
I read these comments and am trying to understand your history, pride & disappointment in this sword being treated so. I also thought of your initial Ancestral Katana makers and the years it took to create one blade. The power tools used for the restoration had me realize how long just drilling a hole or any slot opening in metal, hammering the layers of steel that had to be made, etc. Please reply why this isn't correct so you can educate me. Many thanks...
That all depends on what you think a real Katana is...if you mean ancient you are correct but a Katana doesn't have to be old to do its job. Katana just means blade and it looks like a blade to me. I'm pretty sure it would take your arm off if a skilled person used it.
What a half assed job. You did "OK" about half the way thru the blade resto but then turned armature. That short tang will split the handle the first time you use it. You could have used some nicer material for the hardware. and then what did you wrap it with...looked like chap ribbon. So sad, this blade could have been turned into a work of art. What a waste.
It must be mass produced factory replica. No marking or makers mark engraved on the handle. I don't think its that old either there was practically no pitting on the blade after first clean. Good effort though.
It's a beautiful iron rod.

just a note. perhaps he knows the blade is not authentic, so he treated it that way.
as far as polishing to mirror finish goes, it's extremely important, as doing so better seals the surface against oxidation. so, yes, fine polishing is important in the life value of a fine piece.
So Which is it A Samurai Katana or a Ninjato
What does the boiled coffee do?
Maybe, but if the blade is clean, strong, and sharp, then it was good work. The rest is artistic open to all/any opinions.
Nobody asked you cowboy move on
It's very clearly mass produced junk, there aren't even any folds in the steel
I did not see a makers signature on the tange, so I believe it is safe to say that it was either a cheap knockoff (possibly made in China) or a WW2 officers sword that was somewhat mass produced.
@@jackn2236 many valuable nihonto don’t have signatures so that is not a good way of determining whether it is authentic or not
@@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 that is very true. Only the absolute top sword smith in Japan put there signatures on the tang so. I say again I hope this was not a true real Katana if it was I would be heartbroken.
Hi .why did you put that sword under heat to straighten it? :-
I was so glad this isn’t a real japanese blade, not even a cheap WW2 blade.
Not a real sword (katana), but the job you did to bring it back to good condition is was very well done. I applaud your work. Well done.
That all depends on what you think a real Katana is...if you mean ancient you are correct but a Katana doesn't have to be old to do its job. Katana just means blade and it looks like a blade to me. I'm pretty sure it would take your arm off if a skilled person used it.
Not a real katana, presumably not made of the superior magical ancient steel.
For me à katana remain a sword made of strong Steel and manufactured by a very competent blacksmith
Awesome
Its a fake katana, you can tell the difference in the tounge its rounded and no signature of the maker.
Peut-être un shin guntō ?
It must be mass produced factory replica. No marking or makers mark engraved on the handle. I don't think its that old either there was practically no pitting on the blade after first clean. Good effort though.
many valuable nihonto don’t have signatures so that is not a good way of determining whether it is authentic or not
Amazing! But I am curious. What does the coffee do for the blade?
caffinated steel
Polisher of souls! Nice job on an ordinary old Katana.
Yeah! A real Japanese sword smith, would turn in his own grave!

What a mess. You did a new differential quench on a blade that's already curved...this is a video of what not to do. :(
I wonder if it was even a real katana...
@@j.lietka9406 at best, it was probably one of those cheap $50 "katanas"
Edit: that thing wiggled too much for my liking when it was in the vice....
@@1.1797 wish he had given a better look at the tang and blade after he got the majority of the corrosion off it. Yeah, probably a stamped out type!
