  • How to hoist furniture when moving - Do you have large furniture won't fit up stairs or into an elevator? What to do explained by the professionals.
In this video we explain how to professionally pad wrap, protect, and hoist large furniture. Our customers often ask how we would move furniture that does not fit into an elevator or up a flight of stairs, so we decided to create this video as a visual reference. To be clear, we do not recommend hosting large furniture by yourself and we always recommend hiring a professional. However, due to the overwhelming questions that we have been receiving, we created this visual representation to explain how a professional mover would perform this task. Please do not try this at home. This is not an easy task and should only be performed by trained professional piano movers.
This video was created by the professionals at Stumpf Moving and Storage to shed light on the moving industry. Please hit that like button for us, and don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more moving tips!

Where was this video at when our crew moved a couch from a second story balcony?! We got the job done but definitely skinned the cat the long way lol Im with Baileys/Allied. So we had me and one guy on the balcony with the sofa strapped the long way dropping it down, sofa side first, to just one guy standing on damn near the top of a ladder and soon as he had hands on it I ran down to give em a hand while the guy I left on the balcony lowered the rest of the weight down! Smh on a windy snowy colorado day at that. Thanks for the videos! I've learned a ton watching Stumpf

Hey Maurice! Thank you for watching our videos. How long have you been working for Bailey's? It sounds like you had quite the hoist. I'm glad you got it done safely. It's always nice to hear that our videos are helping people learn, and get some entertainment at the same time. Is there a topic you would like to see covered in a video?

Thanks so much Sean and the rest of the crew for showing this and other videos. I'm starting my own moving company and it's great to see how things are done by the consummate professionals of the industry.
At the same time, every time I watch your videos, I feel like there ends up being a lot of waste. I know you cut down on waste by using rubber bands, but out of curiosity rather than criticism I was wondering; why use so much plastic wrap? Is it really worth the time, cost, and waste to wrap the couch so completely when it's only getting hoisted up? Have you used less in the past and had issues where the blankets got pulled off with the hoisting? I can only imagine that this is the case, but when I think the chances of a mess upvs the cost of the material I can't help but feel like when it comes down to it you must end up paying more for materials than you do for the occasional mess up and claim. Can you shed some light on this? And explain why this is the direction that your company goes with this? Thanks again for all the great educational content.

Thank you for watching our videos! It means a lot to us.
As for your question about the plastic wrap, we only recommend using plastic wrap, tape, and other such materials when absolutely needed. In the case of this and any hoist, sofas must be completely wrap and protected. Hoisting furniture is a very difficult and skilled operation to perform. If a hoist is not done correctly, the furniture could be damaged, or the movers could get hurt. For that reason, hoisting has become a lost art that many movers no longer do. The risks out way the benefits in the minds of many movers.
Much of the furniture that we hoist is very expensive, oversized, and cumbersome. Some of the sofas that we hoist cost several thousand dollars. If something were to happen to the sofa, it would end up costing us more to fix than what we would make preforming the hoist. If the sofa was not properly wrapped and protected, the rough brick facade of the building could snag or rip the sofa. The tree branches and bushes could also do the same thing. Finally, when the movers bring the sofa over the banister, they cannot have anything obstructing their view or their grip on the sofa. The protection of the sofa isn't just to minimize risk to the furniture, it is also to keep our movers safe at the most difficult time of the hoist.
It may seem like a lot of plastic wrap was used, but we did not use as much plastic wrap as you would think. We didn't even use a quarter of the roll for these two sofas.
Long story short, it's better to be safe than sorry. At the end of the day, it is in everyone's best interest to professionally wrap and protect items being hoisted.

Because each hoist is different, there is no blanket cost covering the service. These types of moves are difficult and dangerous. For that reason one of our move coordinators must give an each customer an estimate for the cost of this service. Our move coordinator will first see if a hoist is possible. Once they determine the possibility, we have to take into account what equipment is needed, how many of our crew members are needed, are there any special accommodations that must be met, and finally how long the hoist will take. Remember call me this is not an average move. This task requires highly trained and experienced professional movers to accomplish.
