  • Mid Summer Road Challenge 2024
This was to be a great event in terms of fun & the scenery.
A small entry of 25 cars (sadly no bikes), it was set out to be taken part in by almost any car.
Day one was to be a touring Assembly taking us into Wales
It started at 7.30 with scrutineering & breakfast at the Crown Inn Catcott Somerset, heading north over the summerset plains we head for Cheddar Gorge, Round Bristol Airport, where 2 of the entrants were lucky enough to race planes taking off, Over the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and then over the Seven Bridge to our first wonderful lunch stop at Abbey Mill, Tintern.
Onward north we eventually find ourselves at the Metropole Hotel Llandrindod Wells, here we all checked had time in the bar & a wonderful meal together.
Day Two started with Breakfast and start at 8.15, the route started north to be a 130 mile anti clock wise loop back to the hotel taking in some amazing views & competitive elements.
Now there was to be a twist, to gain points you had to do each test with in the 70% average time of all entrants, so you had to work out how long you felt this might be, not so easy as you have no idea how long others might be taking.
The first of these was at the very start, a regularity test 17.5mph 7.7 miles (do the sums to the time required), with Mark Gregg taking the time at the end of this test, moving on to the B4518 you get to see wonderful views of the Lakes, Dams, & the roads and rivers were amazing, through Cwmystwyth onto the B4343, and across to meet up with the Tregaron & District Motor Club (thank you guys you did a great job), who had set up a driving test comprising of two cones you had to do a complete circle around each and back to the start as quick as possible, (but not forgetting the 70%).
From there we continued south to Tregaron Clwb Rygbi (home of the T&DMC) for tea & cake. Heading west toward Abergwesyn we are again into the hills & valleys, here we find another test this one a stop & reverse over 2 lines set stager from one another, through Abergwesyn toward Llanwrtyd we find another test over 2 lines but ending by having to revers all the way back over the start line. Another regularity test 15mph 2.7 miles, On to the A40 for more tea & cakes in the real quirky White House Hotel (how often do you have a Giraffe holding a chandler over your table!) continuing on, we pass through Erwood (possibly the best public toilets in the world (according to Jonathan Laver)) to Painscastle for another line test, & form here we wind our way back to the Metropole for more bar & dinner time.
Over all it was a great event with good company and wonderful views.
