I do a lot of macramé and what I have never found in any books is leaving the working string longer than the two inner strings. The outer ones get progressively shorter and you can end up with the two inner string being longer than the outer pair. I often make the outer pair a third longer than the inner pair and when they are both the same length continue to make the pot hanger or whatever it is you are making. There is less waste string this way if you are careful.
