Haha Thank You! It sure was a blast and strong fight, I have never fought a striped bass this good before. Usually they fight for a little bit and then swim to the net. This Striper put on a show. I’m very thankful to enjoy this fish and nothing was wasted. San Luis Reservoir sure have quality fish. Thanks!!
Thank You!! I was a bit nervous as of how am I supposed to move this Striper around and when I first try to lift it the kayak started to lean a bit to my left thinking is it worth it to hold it on the kayak. Such a power fish. Thanks!!
Thank You!! Yeah every time I go out here at San Luis Reservoir I try to venture farther and farther and even if not too far but cover in a zone that I probably missed or haven’t fish before. I’ll hit a few of my marks along the way but on a nice day like this with light wind and wind that will push me back to the boat ramp in the afternoon I usually go farther out. Thanks!
There were a few times where the kayak started to feel like it’s started to lean a bit haha. I usually wait till I get back on land to hold it but that excitement got me going haha. Great way to start the year! Thanks Man!!
Since two November ago kayak were pretty much off the inspection list, only boats. But I still say practice clean and dry kayak every time, no one wants a dirty kayak.
Thanks Thanh! Man I got lucky! I usually bring my big arbor spool reel for in case they run but this time I brought a smaller spool kind of reel and it was a bit nerve wrecking once I started to run out of line. Haha right? It can eat the small 20 inch Striper in one gulp. It was a blast and crazy trip hooking up on one so big. These big stripers are tough to process it’s too big. Not like a halibut where it’s still easy to process even when big. These Striper spine, rib bone, fin bone, and head are thick! Processing for soup, fish head soup, bone broth isn’t like the smaller one easier with a small knife or scissor. Thanks!!
@ what’s the actually measurement? Those kinda sizes are usually in Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. I can only imagine chopping through the bone with an axe. 😂. Enjoy! Here’s to the next PB! Cheers!
Dude! You need to join in with me again at SLR. Water is clear and cold, my type of condition for fishing. I should have used a hacksaw to cut bones. Let’s go catch some stripers!! I’ve been finding more and more spots that are productive. Stars align for an early morning fishing.
Very true in that aspect of Striper and brown trout. Man I bet you would kill it at San Luis especially on your boat and you already use big lures on trout, same method and bigger fish. I say go while it’s nice and cool before that place heats up into the 100 plus degrees and algae everywhere. Your trout setup will hooked so many Stripers especially with the red hooks.
Yeah man, always welcome to join in. I used to really don’t like dinosaurs point but after fishing this area for a few years now it’s not that bad and produces pretty good. My waypoints are getting more and more pins. Thanks!
Holy crap. That thing is huge. Congrats. Gotta be a pb. What was the final measure? What time did you get on the water? You’re a beast for getting on the water when it do dam cold.
Thanks EJ! Man it was unreal, I was like sturgeon or Striper because I’ve never fought a striper like this before and had seen sturgeon jump out the waters here before. But yeah my PB, sure beats my big stripers from the delta and the two big fatty from Pacifica while salmon fishing. Never too cold haha, I was on the water at about 7:05am and got bites in the cove but knew my fishing grounds was out the cove. Barefoot in the cold is best. Thanks!!
Nice fish! I've always been curious about going out there on a yak. Never felt it was worth making the trip out there due to how bi-polar the weather can be. How often are you out there on the yak?
Thank You!!! It’s fun on the San Luis Reservoir when you go on calm conditions. I don’t even plan a trip if the conditions isn’t good or calm enough. I always use two sources of forecasting like windy.com or the Windy app and I use google. It tells you all the wind speeds at each hours and the directions of the wind per hour. If the wind gets pass 6mph I probably won’t even go because like you said and sometimes the forecast isn’t accurate and it can be a few extra mph difference where a 6mph actually being a 10mph which I have been in before. So I watch for the afternoon winds direction and if it blows into the middle or east to los Banos then I don’t go out far. If the winds blow back to the boat ramp then I go out farther. I always play by conditions and forecast. Whitecaps happens fast and dangerous. It just depends on the forecast if it allows me to play and fish or go somewhere else. Kind of hard to say how often I go but if it’s calm I’ll be there till rockfish season opens.
There are fish in the cove by the boat ramp so you don’t have to go far. The fish in the cove moves a lot so you will have to find them, they don’t stay in one area for long but they are in the cove.
Thanks James! I always thought man some people are so lucky to catch monsters and over the many years maybe one day… I got luck on my side this time and wow what a fight! These big fish are hard to clean, bones so big and thick that I had to take out the giant butcher knife and a wire cutting tool to cut some bones and top fin spikes. Thanks Man!!
Taste similar, I can’t tell much difference at all, the “red meat” or blood line meat is a lot bigger so you taste it more if you use it into your dishes but to me it tastes the same. Bigger fish bigger red meat, if you cut it out it tasted pretty much the same as a smaller striped bass. Only difference I can point out is that the smaller 18-28 inch bass has a tiny bit more tenderness but not by much. The soup with the big ones are much better with the bigger bone adding more flavor in my opinion.
bro, that place is haunted , got some weird sea serpent in that big lake, last thing i want to be on is fishing from a kayak by myself... don't want something to grab u over and pull u under if u know what i mean
I hear a lot of Hmong stories about dragons and spooky creatures and boats getting stuck in place with the motor running and they not gaining distance. I fish SLR solo for many years and from gate open to gate closing and never have any issues nor see anything strange. I like fishing SLR, it’s a good lake that produces fish from the kayak and paddle board. Thanks!
It’s ok to keep a big fish, we spent thousands on fishing gears for what lol. Just know your limits on what to keep and what to release. I usually release most of my big fish
Thanks Man!! I usually run into people who are really into the fishery and saving or releasing the big females for the fishery so we can all keep fishing so I try to practice in that. But the odds of me catching one of these are rare and nothing is going to waste. One big one is more than enough, no need two if I hooked up on two. Fish head soup, fish bone broth, liver and heart will get eaten, eggs into soup, scales for my plants, and what ever is left over is for crab bait. Thanks Man!!
I wish! Maybe one day I might get a Hobie adventure island with that sail for smooth sailing and room for fish and crap traps. Fun fight and definitely need a bigger boat, one is all I can handle.
I usually like 19-27 inch, more tender meat. That’s what I say about over 35inch lingcods but I see people taking them home and eating them. I took a 35in lingcod home and it tasted just fine.
Congratulations that’s once in a lifetime to catch big hog striped bass at San Luis Reservoir. You’re making those boater s jealous! 😊
Haha Thank You! It sure was a blast and strong fight, I have never fought a striped bass this good before. Usually they fight for a little bit and then swim to the net. This Striper put on a show. Did you measure the length and weight of the striper ? I guess it’s about 35-38 lb
That must be the one I lost 15 years ago that pulled me in the water from shore. “THE ONE” that got away. Congrats 👍
Thank You! It fought strong so I think it might be the same fish.
holy shiet!! Good harvest. For a sec there, was worried you might flip when you were holding up that biggun.
Thank You!! I was a bit nervous as of how am I supposed to move this Striper around and when I first try to lift it the kayak started to lean a bit to my left thinking is it worth it to hold it on the kayak. Such a power fish. Thanks!!
Wow! You went far on that kayak! Nice catch! The second one was huge!
Thanks!
@22:17 you were about to tip over from that monster! Best day.

@@Adventurewithnhia Thanks Man for getting back! Did you now have to have your kayak inspected before you are allowed to launch?
Since two November ago kayak were pretty much off the inspection list, only boats.
But I still say practice clean and dry kayak every time, no one wants a dirty kayak.
Holy cow! That’s a monster right there sheesh!
Thanks Man!! I got really lucky this time!
Yo!!!! That’s a monster of a fish. You called it too! It looks like it can eat your smaller keeper in one try. Hell of a day for you. Great work!
Thanks Thanh! Man I got lucky! @ shoot! You don’t have to convince me of a good time.
Good eating right there!!!
That is a UNIT! Congrats man!
Thanks Jake!! I was like come on 2 in the low 20 inchers and I am happy, yikes! What a day!!
@ that’s the beauty of fishing! Never know when you will hook a monster!
Heck Yeah!! Feels good when a surprise ends up at the end of your fishing line.
Damn ! Thats a beast 💪! Congrats brother
Thanks Man!! Trout fishing is still a blast but dayum these stripers get crazy big. I went to a warmer lake and I got really lucky! Thanks!!
@Adventurewithnhia love stripers ! Like the brown trout of the bass world ! I haven't been out to San Luis in years . Looks awesome.
Very true in that aspect of Striper and brown trout. Man I bet you would kill it at San Luis especially on your boat and you already use big lures on trout, same method and bigger fish. Congrat Nhia, I need to come out there and visit your area with you one of these day.
Yeah man, always welcome to join in. I used to really don’t like dinosaurs point but after fishing this area for a few years now it’s not that bad and produces pretty good. My waypoints are getting more and more pins. Thanks!

What area is this if you don’t mind me asking
SLR, kayak range from the boat ramp.
Which lake are you fishing at?
SLR, more keepers and rare to see shakers.
What's slr?
San Luis reservoir (SLR)
Congrats on a stud one dude.
Thank You!!! Unreal and unexpected fish.

Nice big mama

that big striper does not taste good compare to a 18 to less than 30 in fish.
