The rarest Ford Torino is a 1970 model, not the more famous Gran Torino, with only 90 units produced. This limited-edition Torino Twister Special was released a couple of years before the Gran Torino and is notable for its scarcity and historical importance. It was part of a promotional strategy, sold mainly in the Kansas City region, and designed to attract customers with its high performance and unique features.
The Twister Special boasted significant power enhancements, including a Rochester four-barrel carburetor and a 3.50 Traction-Lok differential, but lacked power brakes and steering, making for a challenging driving experience. Its distinctive look included rear and lip spoilers, unique decals, Cobra branding, louvered rear window, and a bright Calypso Coral red paint.
Today, only 29 of these cars are known to exist, making them one of the rarest muscle cars. The rarity is due to heavy usage, customization, and cannibalization for parts over the years, along with poor resale value. While the original price is unknown, recent auction estimates suggest a sale price of up to $180,000 for an original automatic model. With 61 cars still unaccounted for, there is a potential treasure trove for enthusiasts willing to search.
