  • I'm heading out on a winter kayaking adventure! There's some snow in the air, and it's almost freezing out, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a kayaking river trip. Kayaking in the winter can be amazing! It can also be dangerous if you don't have the right equipment. It can be even more dangerous if you do it alone. But is there ever a good time to go kayaking alone? Is it safe to go kayaking alone? These are some of the things we'll talk about while challenging big rapids in a big kayak!

    I've kayaked for years myself. A few years ago I invested in a drysuit. Still paddled myself for another year with the drysuit. Last year I did paddled with someone but we didn't go out very often. I am back to paddling myself this winter. Yes, it is better to have someone else with you, but, I accept the additional risk going out myself. Every trip, I make sure someone who's where I am. I tell them when I get off the water. I have learned to roll and I've taken several safety classes.

    Always a pleasure to watch you in action. Thanks for addressing solo paddling. I often paddle alone--for me, it's hard to find a paddling partner with the required advanced skills. I have sadly discovered that paddling with someone who doesn't know their stuff is just as risky as paddling alone...

    Good video! Thanks Ken! I appreciate the debate about paddling alone. I have paddled flat and whitewater for 35 years and do occasionally paddle alone. Recently I have had some exceptional flatwater solo fun and wouldn't miss it for the world. Reliable roll and rescue gear and knowledge are key, as you said. I also paddle whitewater alone if it is at least a grade below my ability and I know it well. More often I enjoy my paddling buddies and whitewater community! Please keep celebrating paddling, sharing your knowledge and stories as a proud fellow Canadian!

    Great video about the topic of solo paddling. I regularly paddle alone, but it's a little bit safer to do so here in the UK as our waterways (rivers/canals) are mostly lined with footpaths/towpaths that are used heavily by hikers, cyclists, joggers, dog walkers and the canals are home to a fair few canal boats/narrow boats. So even though I'm paddling alone, I'm never really alone. So I think it's more to do with where in the world you paddle as to whether you should paddle alone. But definitely something people should think heavily about before doing so.

      Even here in the UK it does vary. For teaching purposes in Winter the likes of Coniston, Ullswater and Windermere are rated as high as the sea. Large lake (small by US size) affected by wind so can get small waves and largely with no perimeter road. Yet in the middle of summer you can't paddle in a straight line for more than 20 yards if you are with a mile of any of the launching points.

    Solid truth in this video on reasons NOT to paddle alone. Yes I do it sometimes, but in more calm or easy to get to shore rivers. I had a recent "wake up" after 30+ years of kayaking. I was out alone on my paddle board and no one around me for hundreds of yards in deep water with zero beach area next to steep cliffs. In the transition from standing to sitting, I lost balance and this old guy went swimming. I broke my cardinal rule of always wear a pfd. I did not have one on and I did 15-20 minutes of treading water, holding on to the paddle, and trying to scissor kick 400+ years to the nearest beach area. My big board is 36" wide x 11'6" and not easy to flip back over. No panic, but mad at myself for a newbie mistake. I moved to the back, grabbed the rear long fin and wrestled it over. Luckily I was in warm water as cold water would have been a real struggle. A reminder lesson for sure.

    Hey Ken , you covered pretty much every pcs of gear but you missed out on the importance of a neoprene hat.... Soooooo important in those conditions. I paddle alone almost exlusively except in new or big whitewater. Solo flatwater or mild whitewater is the reason I got into kayaking in the first place. Staying vigilant on the river can also be easier done alone. I found other people don't necessarily make paddling any safer, personal responsibility does.

    I always enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them. Paddling alone...I decided to go out one, gusty, windy day, by myself on a large reservoir in the Sierra, near Truckee, CA. I was in 85 feet of water and was practicing edging my FeelFree Aventura 125. It was my second time out in this kayak and I was using a half skirt. While edging it I just happened to roll it over; I was 65 years old, but in pretty fair condition. I always wear my PFD and I've watched many a video on self rescue, but I did not have any self rescue equipment such as a paddle float or a bilge pump.. I was able to flip my kayak back over, but I had neglected to latch the front hatch and it was full of water. After many attempts at trying to empty the water out, I decided to tow it to a nearby island, about 40-50 yards away into the wind, where I could stand up and dump the water out. There were 4 people on a boat nearby that watched my struggle and came over to offer their help. They pulled my boat up onto their boat and dumped the water out, insisting I stay and rest for a while. After about 10 minutes they left me at the little island, I got into my boat and paddled back to the boat ramp where I started. When I got home that evening, I ordered a bilge pump, paddle float and a bilge sponge. Preparation really is a must to avoid getting into trouble, especially if you are alone.

      That could have ended many times worse! Preparation and training is so important! Glad you survived the challenge! I am 61 this February, started kayaking this past summer and have yet to practice rolling and reentering my kayak. I think I will do that before venturing out solo again!!

    • @alangross2277
      @alangross2277 2 года назад +1

      @@barrymeeks3339 Evidently I'm a slow learner...went for a solo bicycle ride, it's just a bicycle ride, right? That was a couple of weeks ago and I crashed my bike! I had gotten off of the concrete path to avoid a pedestrian. There was an asphalt path about 30 yards away paralleling the concrete path. I rode on it for a while, riding at a pretty good clip. I got well passed the pedestrian and decided to cross back over to the concrete path. I picked a clear spot and rode diagonally across to the concrete path; what I wasn't prepared for was that the concrete was 4-6" higher than the dirt I was on! I went down hard as soon as my front wheel hit the concrete edge...possible concussion, road rash on my elbow and knee. I woke up in the middle of the night with really severe hip pain, which made me wonder if I had broken it. I will ride alone again, but I won't do what I did before! I'm not one to not do things just because I have nobody to do them with, but being prepared is a wise idea if I'm going to be alone. Stay safe.

    Loved the video format, always brightens my day to see paddling on water like that. I have the same issue re mitts etc. and often take warm gloves to put on after paddling without though I still don't paddle when it gets to freezing. Agree with the sentiments about paddling alone but if the waters a grade or so below what you would do with a group sometimes you do or you just wouldn't paddle. As an ex instructor I reckon if you would happily be responsible to teach others on that water then you can happily paddle it alone. At may age I now only paddle alone on flat water, but even flat moving water has its risks from downed trees etc.

      @@PaddleTV That made me think. When I did slaloms we had rock solid thigh braces and seats packed out with very hard stuff. (It was late 70s early 80s) Then later started to appreciate a little bit of give when doing long days and teaching. I have seen people add softer padding to the thigh braces. Now I can't actually make my mind up if hard and immovable (discounting the adjustment) is better than having a certain amount of give. I guess you can always pad out a rock solid one but you cant fix one that is too wobbly.

    Paddle alone is totally fine as long as you know yourself, know how you react in different situations and have all the safety.

    I agree as a general rule paddling on your own is not a good choice. Skill and knowledge of the water you are paddling on are factors. This is true on all waterways, flat, open, white.
    I would suggest that your joke about hot water and Bayley can give people the suggestion that mixing alcohol and paddling isn't a bad idea.

    I tend to paddle alone, but keep to flat water and close to civilisation. Having said that, speaking from experience, don't get in the water to cool off unless you're 100% certain what's in there, or you might end up with a massive laceration down your leg from an oyster, requiring you to make an emergency services phone call and wait for the ambo's to get to you (though they did thank me for the nice boat trip they got to have).

    So what do you do if you are new to kayaking and literally have no one to paddle with? I Also have an odd schedule and live out in the sticks. Should I just not paddle, but maybe 5-10 times a year or paddle at my leisure solo? Safety wise, I should only paddle 5-10 times a year...though if I ever want to get out there and practice or get better I'd have to paddle solo.

    Hey Ken, what is the mount you use for your camera on the front of your kayak? How is it attached and how secure is it?

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  2 года назад +2

      Hi Wayne. For this video, I simply used a sticky GoPro mount on the kayak. It worked because I chose a spot on the kayak that was flat and smooth, so the mount stuck very well. That being said, I didn't trust it, and so I used a tiny rope as a leash that was attached to the deck lines of the kayak. That way, if the mount failed, I wouldn't lose the camera.

    What is your impression regarding size now? You had concerns about a larger paddler in the first review. As a 6'2" paddler interested in some overnight trips would you recommend the mv or hv?

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  2 года назад +2

      Being 6'2" myself, I can tell you that I enjoyed the 'smaller fit' when paddling in the whitewater, as it made the kayak more nimble, but for the second half of the trip (mostly flatwater) I started getting pretty uncomfortable in the kayak, purely because it was small and I didn't have room to move my legs around. I would definitely get an HV myself.

    Hi, I see I'm not the only one interested in the comparison of the Virgo and the Dagger Stratos 14.5l (which I own). What are your thoughts? Great vid thanks

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  2 года назад +1

      Hi Mark. It's a popular comparison! I don't know if you saw my reply, but in a nut shell, I really like both the Stratos and the Virgo. The Virgo costs about 50% more, and for the extra money, you get a kayak that is a little higher performance, and the outfitting and build quality is slightly higher. More specifically, performance wise, the Virgo carves a little better and turns more quickly. Examples of the outfitting/build quality include things like the thigh hooks on the Virgo are super stiff, while the Stratos are very flexible. This isn't a big deal except in rough conditions where the stiffness is a perk. Honestly though... both are super solid and fun boats in my opinion.

    After 25 years of cold weather paddling in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Canada - I'm done with cold weather paddling. Way too many mornings crawling out of a snow covered tent and boiling water to thaw out my gear. I still go out in the spring and fall, but only if the air temp is at least 65° F and the sun is shinning. The water can be cold, but the air has to be above 65°F. I guess it's because I've been to Costa Rica and Ecuador a few times and got used to warm water kayaking. That said, I live for those rare summer days in the North when the water is up and the air temps are in the 80's. Should you paddle alone - well, that's up to the paddler. I Never paddle alone and I have a "Bomb-Proof roll", but I still swim once in a while because "Shit Happens".

    Okay, I love you Ken and I love your videos but I ONLY paddle alone. That's kind of the point. I am out, getting away from people, and I don't want anyone with. So...I stay right on shores, go for quite short paddles, and the water is glassy calm. Should I get into any trouble, I'm never more than a twenty minute hike from people, and with all your great advice on gear and dry bags...come on...it's okay. Yes?

    • @PaddleTV
      @PaddleTV  2 года назад

      Ha! Sorry Jennifer. I didn't mean to make you feel like you're doing something wrong. It sounds like you're being very conservative with where you paddle and how you paddle alone, and so I definitely don't think you should stop doing what you're doing. :) Yes, it's always a little riskier paddling alone, because you don't have the same safety net. But you're mitigating that risk by paddling in sheltered water, close to shore, close to help. I'm a firm believer that if we spend our lives trying to remove all risk from it, then we'll miss out on so many wonderful experiences. All we can do is minimize the risks, and make thoughtful choices, which it sounds like you're doing. Happy paddling!
