Ou When I arrived, my friends had left the party. Dans le deuxième exemple: I had just finished lunch when Joe called. Ou Joe called when I just finished lunch. Contrairement au premier exemple, vous placez when avec la partie de la phrase au Simple Past, le deuxième exemple le when est placé avec le Past Perfect. Pourquoi? Est-ce à dire que : When Joe called, I just finished lunch. Cette phrase est-elle correcte? Je croyais que when était toujours dans la partie de la phrase où le verbe est au Simple Past. De plus, je voudrais savoir la traduction du Past Perfect semble être autant le Plus-que-Parfait que le Passé composé??? In the examples provided, the placement of WHEN does not change the sequence of events in the sentences. When Joe called, I had just finished lunch. /Joe called when I had just finished lunch. In both sentences I finished lunch, then Joe called.
Thats why at 2:30 in the video, the brackets do not include WHEN. The WHEN can be placed either with the past verb or with the past perfect. The difference in meaning is not significant in the examples provided.
The past perfect tense in English is translated into **"le plus-que-parfait"** in French.

Yes, both are correct. The verb HAVE is often used as a synonym of EAT. I had a sandwich for lunch. I ate a sandwich for lunch. Same meaning.

Hello! Nice try on your past perfect sentence. You understand the general idea but the meaning is not clear because of the choice of words. Do you mean "I had left work when they broke into the office"? Or maybe "I had quit my job when the company went out of business." Either meaning is possible with your sentence.
