I ended up w/the "AL R" build full 29er (XL) and after taking a few quick-rides on this monster my love and faith for hardtails is totally renewed! I really mean that. I basically wanted the "experience" of my Stumpy but in a hardtail that would pedal and enjoy the paths in New England, dirt rail trails, and fire road trails. I'm convinced I could take this Chameleon almost anywhere that Stumpjumper would go--no exaggeration. I'm so impressed with this bike that it doesn't hurt as much when I think of what it cost. Even IF this was available in carbon, and I could spring for that extra cost, I wouldn't want it in carbon. When you're rockin' this thing you can't tell. I might like carbon rims on this, but I'm 100% satisfied as it is, which includes the minor upgrades I do to customize the fit. Once you test ride this thing it makes the other HTs in its price range seem like they're missing something. Thanks a million though for your thorough, accurate, and honest reviews about this bike. That's even more evidence in support of your expertise. Best hardtail videos bar none. ~JSV
I just purchased this bike and i switched the back 27.5 for 29 inch wheels, its really nice to have both options because one might be better than the other in different scenarios
I’m pretty sure you have the best bike review videos on RUclips. Every time I jump on here my fingers are crossed that there’s a new video from you just waiting for me to watch. You’ve got me pumped to get a 29er that will fit 3.0 tires. Leaning towards a Surly Krampus with a -2 degree headset but would like to get something made in the USA. I spent $1000 at competitive cyclist the other day and used your link. I hope you get a cut. Thanks for all the hard work making videos for me to watch.
Absolute Bananarama! Steve, thanks again for clearly translating your experience on the most recent version of Santa Cruz’s Chameleon. Beautiful backdrop to another fantastic video crammed full of attention to details most of us have trouble describing! Grayson has some skillzzz! Thanks for your Hard Work!
Thanks for these videos, helped me make my decision and picked up my 2022 Chameleon today! Took it out and it was a blast on my local trails. Can't wait to take it out some more. Love the videos, keep up all the good work!
Great video! Dan and I rode Captain Ahab on Saturday and it was a blast! Sorry we missed you.. We were racing the sun so we didn't session things and clear everything but it was amazing. I got a flat from a rim strike and you were right about those darts. We were back on the trail after 3-5 minutes.
Appreciate the comparison to the last chameleon, really liked that bike for how versatile it was. Could make it down almost everything I can on a full sus but it was still lively on mellower trails. I've since moved on to a '21 Chisel as I wanted something faster and lighter. These slacked out hardtails don't appeal to me as if I'm riding steeper chunkier terrain, I'd rather be on my full sus they are easier on the joints/body. The Chisel is great for mellower stuff and is surprisingly capable with a 120mm 34 and dropper. That said I'm gonna experiment with dropping the fork down to 110mm and a -1 headset (shoutout to spesh for using a ZS headset)
I think you put it in the right perspective. I love 21 Chameleon for my local flat stuff. But seeing the Geo change, I think it would be too slack for the XC I do, and not enough travel for the DH type stuff I end up doing with my Bigwig.
Great review! I’m torn between this bike and a Kona Honzo esd. I like to convert to single speed in the winter and gears for summer, trail ride a lot but hit the bike park with my son on the weekends. Both bikes seem about perfect for this, so I guess it’s a win-win situation of the two bikes lol! Keep up the good work 🤙
I thought I was going to say "I LOVE THIS BIKE" and run out and get one. Based on the review, my 2018 Chameleon is staying with me (160mm coil, mullet, SS). Same basic head angle, seat angle means nothing (who sits on a SS???) but the playful nature of the previous model is what I love about it. Having said that, I do still want to try this to see if it has a place as a geared hardtail down the road.
I love what they did with this bike. I Iike the option to switch the rear wheel size. I agree about the cable routing too. Give me external routing any day.
Awesome review! I bought my 2021 AL Chameleon because of the original Chameleon review. Seeing this, I don't have as much FOMO since I still ride green and blue trails in Norcal and occasional visits to the skills park/pump track. Definitely a long-awaited update, but you wasted no time on the review. Keep it up Steve!
Awesome video and bike. A nice comparison will be TREK ROSCOE 9 /2022 vs SANTA CRUZ CHAMELEON 2022. Hope to see this on your channel since i value your oppinion very much. Ty.
@@hardtailparty Can't wait to see your ride review! Sounds like the Chameleon will win, but it's still so fun watching your rides and the details you cover. The choices are endless, so the nuances make all the difference for us brainiacs lol!
I just sold my transition hardtail to my neighbour and now im without a spring /fall bike. Im looking to double this as my wifes bike for her occasional riding.( i have a full squish) she is 5’7 and im 6’. If i get a medium is this going to feel too small for me? How tall are you and what size did you pick?
Great video, What’s the difference between the old and new models, can you convert 2019 model into the same spec or is the frame geromerey different all together?
Great review, Steve! I've had my eye on a hardtail upgrade for awhile, and will definitely need to check out the Chameleon. Looks like an incredibly beautiful trail as well.
Another great review, thanks Steve. While I appreciate the prestige, warranty and technical support from Santa Cruz; when you compare the asking price for the Chameleon R 29 (£3000) or D 29 (£2400), with the Ragley Big Al 1.0 (£1400) it's a lot to take in. Not saying it won't be worth it... but it's a big ask.
Yes, it's a lot of money for an nx aluminum hardtail. One other thing to consider is resale value. It's kind of like a Tacoma. Far more money than a Chevy Colorado, but when you go to sell it you get most of it back. The big Al is a fantastic value. We're also comparing a direct to consumer price to a dealership model.
@@hardtailparty I agree with you regarding resale value, especially considering the current state of the second hand market. In the UK Ragley are a dealership brand, my two LBS do Ragley and Santa Cruz. Spoilt for choice... Keep up the great work, I look forward to the 29er review
I commented on your last video, and just watched your review here. After talking to my lbs about our local trails, and thinking about where I usually ride, I'm going ahead with getting the 29er. I know it's not as xc oriented as the last model, but I think it will be okay since my local stuff is more undulating than flat (and our city is building a bike park!) and the odd race is more about seeing new trails and meeting people for me than about competition. In either case, it will be worth trying something radically different to what I'm used to!
great review as always. So awesome that you can ride a hardtail over that terrain. Have you ever tested a chumba? I love the geo of the sendero and even the stella
I haven't been able to convince chumba to send in a frame. I'd love to one day. I've ridden a sendero in a parking lot for a few pedals, but not enough to get a feel for it
I've watched a bunch of your videos as I'm considering swapping out my 2008 Yeti ASR 26 for a hardtail. One thing I noticed in this video is how this bike sounds. When you're dropping a ledge or landing a jump the bike sounds more put together and solid. There's not a lot of extra noise. The tires hit, absorb, and off you go. Great review, thanks
That's the beauty of plus tires. Also, I wear a microphone on my chest, so it picks me up more than the bike. But this is a very smooth and quiet bike.
Cant wait for mine to come in!! Already have a set of SC Reserves and a hope hubs waiting! As someone who MX'd a 2020 chameleon this new geo is gonna be much better for going downhill fast. Might have to make a Downieville trip!
This is very interesting. I am in the market for a single speed and am leaning towards the spot rocker for that application. I typically ride a race geometry with a long top tube. I am currently riding the Lynskey Pro 29er. I love that you love this bike. can you speculate what it would be like as a ss? I have ridden the rocker and am just wondering how it would compare. You have said that the rocker is your favorite ss. do you think that is still the case? also, since it was a 9,5 for descending, do you think there is potential for it to help with my technical skills?
Been waiting for this. Thinking the last version probably suits my moderate riding and central Illinois trails better than this. Now to get the wife on board and hope everyone goes and buys this new version so there's lots of newer used ones to choose from!
Question steve, I am a big fan of the SC chameleon of building the chameleon from the frame up and run 27.5 wheels could the chameleon with a 150mm fork vs the 130mm it comes with?
Thanks for a great review. I wish SC did this like kona with the ESD, both honzos still available. A previous gen built light and new gen chameleon built as a burlier trail bike would be a great 2 bike hardtail stable. I want both ! Any idea on frane weight?
No idea on frame weight. I'd have to completely disassemble the brake hoses to strip them to get a weight and I'm not willing to do that. I've heard rumors of Santa Cruz posting weight numbers online somewhere.
I know you are a big fan of the 130mm and it's cool to see you riding it all the chunky stuff. My first and only hardtail is the meta ht with 160mm fork. I do decent size drops jumps so I always thought the 160mm was more of a benefit for me. Do you find the 130mm can still handle some bigger drops like 8-10ft? This bike looks sick so just wanted to see what you thought!
To optimize a hardtail for lots of slow speed drops and huck to flsts, big travel makes more sense (and full sus makes even more sense). However, you'll pay a price for regular trail riding with the dive and geo changes of a big fork. That said, I'd have no issues hitting 10 foot drops on a 130mm fork, provided it had a good steep downhi landing (like dth in Bentonville)
@@hardtailparty thanks for the thorough reply. Definitely looking forward to a full sus one day, my knees especially, but really enjoying the hardtail life for now.

Hi I’m looking for a new bike I wanted to have your opinion in between because I saw that you had both tried them, the Santa Cruz Chameleon and the Commencal Meta HT Am which you would advise me to go hiking the trail and also the quiet family walk . Thank you for your answer
Great review! I'm considering the Cameleon or a Pipedream Sirius S5. I know they're fairly different bikes, but I'd love to see a review for the Sirius S5 to know if it's any good.
Interesting. I’d love to see you check back in with the Paradox and see how it stacks up with everything that’s come out and been tested over the last year. I’ve always had one eye on the Chameleon but can’t decide which way to go.
After viewing your unboxing video I've been Anticipating your ride review and it hit the nail ride on the head for me too. The Camillion is on my short list of frames I want to replace my Stache with when needed. I love 29yr +"wheels and Interested in a mullet too!!! Great review as always and nice riding too!!!
Love your channel. Another Chameleon owner (2020 29er AL R) here in NorCal based on your video from a few years back. What pedals are you riding in this?
I wonder how it compares to the 2021 Orbea Laufey. The geo on paper is very similar. I bought the Laufey because of this channel and I could not be happier.
Sick on the Gatekeeper entrance move, and cleaning those tricky climbs! That chute you cleaned at 9:06, with a bit of stutter pedaling was sick bro!!! Steve, is that the chest mount you're wearing? I'm looking at this bike along with other hard tails on the list (Canyon Stoic, RM Growler, Trek Roscoe, Vitus something or other, Nuke Proof Reactor, Marin San Quentin or Marin Team Marin2 - because it has some trail geo.) The Kona Honzo was on the list but I went and looked at one and it's surprisingly heavy, even if it had tubes in it - not sure if it's the frame, or componentry, apparently doesn't come with good brakes and you have to run not very good pads, and the rear hub isn't a boost hub, so the regular 2022 Honzo isn't on the list anymore. That being said the geo on the Honzo is good. I hope you would test the new Chameleon with 29 wheels, in addition to the MX. Looks like can get a better hub by upgrading to the R or S builds: DT Swiss 370, 12x148, XD, 28h or E13 SL, 12x148, XD, 28h - or were you already testing that version?
The S build has Dr swiss 370 hubs vs SRAM hubs on the D and R. Hopefully it's the SRAM hubs you don't like so one can just S spec out of this defect. Changing the hub seems to be labor intensive. Maybe $50 plus?
Nice job on the review. Awesome trail. Great riding. Frame colour looked great against that amazing landscape. Think I’ll still keep my alloy v7 but would love to ride one of these. Do you need the 29er dropouts to ride it with a 29 rear wheel? The dropouts for v7 were so difficult to get from Santa Cruz that everyone just changed wheels or ran single speed without swapping the dropouts. The difference in axle and BB height were minimal. Once again great review!
Left Moab a couple weeks ago and did the Navajo rocks loop which for my budget hardtail is maybe pushing it a bit but it was a fantastic trail having a bit of everything with slick rock ,tech up and down and some flow .
Just curious if you've played with the rear dropouts? I changed my bike from a 29er to MX and slammed the dropouts all the way in and my chain was too loose. I had to slide the dropouts to the middle. I didn't have this issue with the 29 rear wheel
Since mine came as an mx from the factory, the chain was the proper length. Wheel size shouldn't have anything to do with chain length, ubless the 29er dropouts are in a drastically different position.
@@hardtailparty Correct, wheel size *shouldn't* change chain length. When I bought the bike, it was a full 29er. I installed the 27.5 dropouts and slammed it all the way forward and the chain was too long. I moved the axle to the middle position, and chain is still slightly too long, but close. When looking at the 29/27.5 dropouts the axle is obviously in different positions (as it should) I guess all i'm saying is for people like me who wants to run both full 29er and mullet, it's not as simple as changing the wheel and dropouts, the chain may need to be changed too..
Disregard Steve, I was about 14 minutes in enjoying the video when I made my comment, only to have you answer it a minute later lol. Thanks for the great review!
Amazing review as always, better at it than anyone else. And great riding! I wouldn't dare do that withouht at least 150mm travel front and rear. Can't wait to hear your thoughts running 29 front and rear.
Thanks for a great review! I might have to perform some mental gymnastics to justify the $1000+ CAD price increase for the sliding dropouts haha. Could you reach out and try a Canyon Stoic 4 if possible? in an xs size even as I'm 5'5"/5'6" with 28" inseam (27.5 wheels xxs-sm vs the 29er m-xl). Tha Stoic comes with a 64 HTA and Pike Select fork and I figured that it's a super solid deal at only $2400 CAD since I'll have a better fork than the competition and can always change the drivetrain for less. Some of the bikes I've been comparing it to are the Ragley MmmBop, Marin San Quentin 2/3, and this Santa Cruz Chameleon. Thank you for publishing these hardtail reviews!
@@hardtailparty Thanks for the reply, I was using the Canyon size finder and they recommended me the xs since they run a size larger than the other brands acording to others. But I'm usually in between sm and med sizes anyways. Looks Like I'll need to get your patreon over winter here and figure out what I need vs want!
@@ShortGuac The Canyon online sizing is off. Read up on it. A lot of returns due to this. I'm usually a medium on most brands and Canyon told me i was small. Luckily my friend got a small i could try and as i thaught it was too small. Wayy too small. If you're familiar with your numhers look at them and you'll see it.
re hub engagement: it's $220 (Australian) for the Shimano 54 tooth upgrade. I looked into it to upgrade my old 350 with the 18 tooth. Absolutely stupid money for 2 bits of metal.

Congrats on a killer bike. I'm thrilled to hear my reciews helped you. Have fun on your new bike.
Nice review. I've had my new Chameleon 8 for a few days now and it's a very impressive bike. I love it.
I just purchased this bike and i switched the back 27.5 for 29 inch wheels, its really nice to have both options because one might be better than the other in different scenarios
Stoked to hear you are getting experimental with this one. It deserves it!
Thank you so much for using my link, that definitely helps. It means a ton. By the way, you're going to love the bike I'm designing.
@@hardtailparty Steve, your own design? Are you coming out with your own brand?
Great review :) any comments on bike park / pump track handling, playfulness?
The bike looks great but that trail is something else! You got some great footage of an amazing trail on a beautiful day.
Spectacular!
It is indeed an incredible trail.
Looks so fun! Would it work 27.5+ front and rear or is it really a 29er?
That’s what I would like to know as well🤔
big ups for doing this review at Ahab! I remember when you posted the last chameleon review there, that video made me need to get mine!
Nice! 👍 Which build did you end up going with? And did you go 29er or mullet?
Great review. Ended up going with the Chameleon over the Roscoe. Moving up from a Marin Bobcat. I’m excited to progress!
Awesome. Several years back I decided i would clean the entire trail, and it forever changed that trail for me.
I have always felt that I have needed a chameleon for many years and versions. Maybe one day
I love what they did with this bike.
I think your chameleon fits your terrain better than this one. Glad you're loving it, it's a special bike.
Awesome video and bike. A nice comparison will be TREK ROSCOE 9 /2022 vs SANTA CRUZ CHAMELEON 2022.
Hope to see this on your channel since i value your oppinion very much.
Ty.
They ride extremely different.
@@hardtailparty Can't wait to see your ride review! Sounds like the Chameleon will win, but it's still so fun watching your rides and the details you cover. The choices are endless, so the nuances make all the difference for us brainiacs lol!
How would you compare this to the current salsa Timberjack?
Great video! How does this compare to the new timberjack in your opinion?
Great review as always!! Certain like the looks of the new Chameleon. That price tag tho...Looking forward to you getting experimental with it!
Keep us posted what you think of it. This bike really has to be ridden aggressively to come alive. Don't hold back on it. :)
@@hardtailparty will do! I'll probably only get a handful of rides this year since it is scheduled to arrive in November, but I'm excited!
@@joelhenderson3723 are you going with a 120 or 130 fork?
@@frostycubed8748 new model is only available with a 130 fork, and geometry was designed around that.
Great review as usual.
Although I have to admit I think I'm happy with my 2019 model for the way I plan to ride it.
I really respect that. The old chameleon is still one of my all-time favorite hardtails. I wish i could find one.
@@hardtailparty I bought my 2018 because of your review, after your wife pointed me to it in a comment.
Is there a noticeable difference on the flats and climbs if coming from a Rocky Mountain Growler 40?
Great review as always, with the 20mm shorter seat tube what size are the droppers now Steve?
great review as always.
Any thoughts compared to Salsa Timberjack? I know liked the Salsa when in mullet mode, so curious how they compare.
Love the review and the Tonka Truck Yellow sold me to go with the new geo. Keep up the great reviews.
Nice review, also nice trail, also makes me want one, have nowhere to put it tho, although that hardly has stopped anyone.
Cant wait for mine to come in!! Already have a set of SC Reserves and a hope hubs waiting! As someone who MX'd a 2020 chameleon this new geo is gonna be much better for going downhill fast. Might have to make a Downieville trip!
I'd be worried the reserves would make it too stiff. They're beautiful wheels though.
Excellent riding and reviews, which bike would be more suitable for heavy rider (285lb) this chameleon or Roscoe 9.??
Thanks.
Neither. You need the stiffness of carbon at that weight.
Smart thinking!
Question steve, I am a big fan of the SC chameleon of building the chameleon from the frame up and run 27.5 wheels could the chameleon with a 150mm fork vs the 130mm it comes with?
How quickly do you typically reply or see messages on patreon?
Usually within 24-48 hours unless it's the weekend
another splendid review,Steve. Wishing for that bike now
I love the color they chose. Looks like a great bike the way it's setup. I wish my shop sold Santa Cruz. 🤙🏼
this frame is seriously on my top 3 hardtail frames.. so sleek and ugh sooo clean
You need a "What a Bike" badge to display for these kinds of bikes.
How does this compare to the RSD MC or the Paradox?
Thanks for a great review. I wish SC did this like kona with the ESD, both honzos still available. A previous gen built light and new gen chameleon built as a burlier trail bike would be a great 2 bike hardtail stable. I want both ! Any idea on frane weight?
No idea on frame weight. I'd have to completely disassemble the brake hoses to strip them to get a weight and I'm not willing to do that. I've heard rumors of Santa Cruz posting weight numbers online somewhere.
Great review and riding as usual...I need some desert riding in my life.

@@drujenssen5444 it's got sliding dropouts, so I don't think UDH is an option, though I'll see if I can work that in.
@@hardtailparty When will we be find out about this bike you’re designing?
Love your channel. Another Chameleon owner (2020 29er AL R) here in NorCal based on your video from a few years back. What pedals are you riding in this?
The cheapest spds i could find.
I wonder how it compares to the 2021 Orbea Laufey. The geo on paper is very similar.
I bought the Laufey because of this channel and I could not be happier.
You sound pretty happy with the new Chameleon! Sounds like it's maybe not right for Boise xc trails, but then again is super versatile.
Looks like can get a better hub by upgrading to the R or S builds: DT Swiss 370, 12x148, XD, 28h or E13 SL, 12x148, XD, 28h - or were you already testing that version?

they are pretty hard to find where I'm at. But then again most bikes are atm.
@@fortunateson2 Yup, crazy times we are living now, just hoping for the better!
I wonder if putting a 27.5 front wheel on it would mello it out more for green and blue trails? another good one man cheers!
probably
On the V7 i never bothered with swapping dropouts when i swapped tires, but on this model i want to try the correct dropouts.
I gave the last gen r build with a 27.5plus and niner wheel set. Need to try it mixed.
Another awesome video. The sticker on the logo didn´t last long, though hehe.
Santa Cruz shows seat tube at 74.5 deg. Does that feel steep enuf? With 65 deg HA I would expect 76 or so deg. Maybe not needed for a hardtail?
It's got a shorter reach so it's not needed as much
What camera do you use on your chest harness?
the bike is pretty sick dude !!!
great video
Man, just have to say again I love that color.
Left Moab a couple weeks ago and did the Navajo rocks loop which for my budget hardtail is maybe pushing it a bit but it was a fantastic trail having a bit of everything with slick rock ,tech up and down and some flow .
That's such a fun trail. I rode it last week on my rigid ss klunker. Video coming soon.
@@stanleychan1340 Maybe your chain was too long to begin with when you bought the bike? Wondering if you have any new information on this.
Great review Steve. Great comparison with the older version. I think the older version is a better fit for the riding I do. Now If I can find one…
Steve, do you plan on testing this bike as a 29er front and back or just mullet?
Disregard Steve, I was about 14 minutes in enjoying the video when I made my comment, only to have you answer it a minute later lol. Thanks for the great review!
Amazing review as always, better at it than anyone else. And great riding! I wouldn't dare do that withouht at least 150mm travel front and rear.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts running 29 front and rear.
Thank you for the kind words, it means a lot.
Which do you prefer, the old carbon model with a Slack-R, or this new one?
I've never ridden an older one with a slack-r. I've installed a few, but never on a size medium where i could try it out.
How was it compare to your banshee
I'm the same size as you and I'm hoping for a medium stoic. Canyon doesn't have any bikes available to send me for review.
The reach is 445. What’s ur preferred stem lenght Steve? 35? 50?
Depends on head angle, intended use, etc.
re hub engagement: it's $220 (Australian) for the Shimano 54 tooth upgrade. I looked into it to upgrade my old 350 with the 18 tooth. Absolutely stupid money for 2 bits of metal.
