    Great Job! I just did this myself on my testing environment a few hours ago and it was successful with basically the same steps you took. Just did the cmd part differently since I did not open up the cmd from the D:\support directly. Keep it up!

    Good work dude.
    Just wanted to share some of the behaviour I saw when I tried it.
    DC server 2012 r2 standard (full GUI) to --> Server 2016 Desktop Experience: Worked fine.
    DC Server CORE 2012r2 to --> Server 2016 CORE. (I was not able to select keep all files and apps & the installation hung up)
    Suggestion: go with a net new server, save yourself some time.

    I would prefer clean installation of OS and domain migration from 2012 R2 to 2016 by adding next domain controller into existing forest of active directory, transfer all fsmo roles to new system and demote the old domain controller + remove from migrated domain.

      Can't really argue with this method. Clean installation's are the best.

    • @TheB1nary
      @TheB1nary 4 года назад

      @@JF32304 It is - but not always expedient. I run a large network and can't always get the funds/time/resources to clean install. So in that case quite a few servers have been upgraded with little to no issues afterwards.

    Microsoft has intentionaly changed something where they won't let you keep your files when trying to do a simple upgrade from 2012 R2 to 2016.

    ok so you have to up grade the schema as if you were adding a 2016 server to the forest as a secondary server.. might as well build a fresh one, promote that and then demote the old one once replicated. having said that, an upgrade is always simpler as you get to keep your various settings...

    • @TheB1nary
      @TheB1nary 4 года назад

      You should always prep the schema with any installation of a newer server operating system (specifically if that server will be a DC). Hope that helps!

My main domain controller has a lot of roles and services running. Am I able to upgrade my current windows server 2012 to 2016 without running into any problem?

      You shouldn't have issues, but make sure you read the core requirements for Server 2016 when upgrading to it. I can't remember if you can do a direct upgrade from Server 2012.

      What version of 2012 do you have? Standard? Datacenter? Enterprise?

  • @danfratamico
    @danfratamico 7 лет назад

    I did an upgrade from Server 2012 R2 Datacenter to Server 2016 Datacenter and ran into many issues. All my scheduled tasks were deleted and IIS configuration was corrupt. I created a snapshot before upgrading, so I was able to revert back. I tried the upgrade 3 times with the same result. Have you had these issues?

    • @bjtechnewshd
      @bjtechnewshd  7 лет назад

      No I haven't. Sorry to hear that. What type of service or scheduled task are you running within your Server 2012 R2 datacenter server?

      I have a few custom tasks and ones that Windows created like the Optimization ones, all gone. They are in my Tasks folder, but I cannot add them back to the schedule.

      Yes but you have to check your current situation don't you?
      Check some stuff like:
      Are RDP ports open in firewall?
      Is RDP even enabled?

    • @joeyyakeera9886
      @joeyyakeera9886 7 лет назад

      It is remote server in datacenter, everything is enabled before the upgrade.

    • @fredganter7215
      @fredganter7215 7 лет назад

      netlogon service erroneously gets switched to manual during the upgrade. You need to change it back to automatic and start the service.
      Amazing to me that a) people make these videos without checking basic functionality before posting, b) "check for updates" doesn't have an update that corrects this.

      You're running too much on your DC. It's best to migrate all the VM's to their own machine.
