It doesn't matter if the player has the trivela playstyle or not. Just make sure the player has at least the basic flair playstyle. Also, don't use too much power. The rabona cross only works with one bar of power (press the cross button once, don't hold it).

Every time I try to do the fancy ground shot it just turns and shoots normally, how do I fix that?

It's because you're not putting enough power behind the shot.
Fancy shots require just one bar of power, while trivelas need at least two bars.
