I think the trend was so good cause it was a trend, everyone doing a similar video. Something onscreen small and pretty uninteresting happens, then the [AS] shows up. But everyone did it completely differently. Could be as simple as using sticky notes to spell it. Could be as complicated as having an electronic screen fizzle into it. A nearly perfect trend, as it's easy to make, yet still ask people to be creative, and is built on everyone putting in their own character into it.
The commentary aside (which was really good don't get me wrong) I really gotta appreciate the editing and all the work that was put into this video. Great job man :]

early morning, i was waiting to leave for school. i opened youtube and watched some videos. "adult swim? i know that channel." i watched an adult swim sketch, then another, then another and landed on one that scared the hell out of me. it was great but i have almost entirely forgotten it because it scared me so bad. turns out it touched on a certain phobia of mine. i started seeing things that weren't there, crying at the sight of anything like it. i tried watching it again, as exposure therapy. it got worse. i went months like this. i didn't like adult swim, i hated adult swim. eventually, this trend came around. i loved it, watched all of them, the nostalgia of watching [as] washed over me and eventually i came to love it and forgot all about my fear. weird story but it's my experience with [as] after a very tough time facing memories i didn't know i had.
