And those that commit suicide become civil servents in the afterlife. That's why she said she wouldn't have cut her wrists if she knew then what she knew now. The guy that made the "feeling a little flat" joke is someone that threw himself in front of a truck.

Betelgeuse was changed to Beetlejuice so people could know how to pronounce it. In the movie, he, and the Deetzes got in trouble for revealing themselves to the living, basically confirming there is an afterlife, which is against the rules.

Adam and Barbara were decaying because Otho was accidentally performing an exorcism (“death for the dead” or however they described it) instead of a summoning. Remember the room of lost souls for the ones that have been exorcised? The souls in there looked just like they did

They didn’t go there on vacation. Lydia’s father bought the house. Jane put it up for sale as soon as the Maitlands died. She said she was related to them (probably a cousin or something) which is why she felt so comfortable going up to their house often and telling them about people making offers on the property. Barbara even told her “please stop showing people pictures of our house”

The spelling in the movie itself is named for the star, Betelgeuse. However the movie title is Beetlejuice because people wouldn't be able to pronounce it.
The animated series was AWESOME, despite how much it departed from the film (cutting the Maitlands entirely, and making Betelgeuse and Lydia BFFs). Very much part of the 80s and 90s trend of taking adult properties and turning them into kid's shows or toylines (Police Academy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Terminator, etc.).

The afterlife bureaucracy are only people who killed themselves. They are stuck being the lowliest of the low of government officials for eternity. The other ghosts have to do a period of time on earth in their dwelling, For Adam and Barbara it was 125 years, kinda like purgatory afterwards they can stay on earth as ghosts or more on to the Netherworld. The first time I watched this I was probably 6 and I loved it and still love it. I've probably watched this movie 300 times.

The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was the same way for me. I didn't even know there WAS a comic book before seeing the movie, and grew up watching the cartoon first. I was therefor VERY confused by the deviations from the cartoon made for the 1990 movie. It wasn't until I got to high school that one of my friends let me borrow his copy of the First Graphic Novel compilation (covering TMNT #1-3, along with a couple of the side stories) and I realized just how faithful the movie was to the comic (though even then it was toned down. The Turtles were straight-up KILLERS in the original books).
The 1990 film is STILL the best TMNT.

Somehow it's cute and fitting that Barbara was able to smack a sandworm and drive it off the first time, then tame it later.
Maybe it's just me that thought Lydia was an iconic role for Winona Ryder.
I've been pleased with other things she's done too, like the best part in the first JJ Abrams Star Trek movie as Spock's (human) mother.
It was funny that wearing pastels, was Otho's worst fear.
A friend told me about a wedding he was at : the best man, when the ring was called for, pulled a plastic finger out of his pocket with the ring on it, took it off and handed it over...
Other fun Halloween sorts of movies by Tim Burton ( Iconic for their time and still.):
"Sleepy Hollow", with Johnny Depp, Cristina Ricci, and Christopher Walken.
"Edward Scissorhands", with Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder. (I must see Duaffy's reaction.)
Tim Burton did the first 2 Batman movies with Michael Keaton, & Jack Nicholson as Joker, Danny DeVito as Penguin and Michelle Pfieffer as Catwoman.
The same sort of wacky humor, somewhat sarcastic dark art and story in all Tim Burton movies.
See also Nightmare Before Christmas, from Tim Burton.

Otho was forced to wear a Leisure suit. They were crazy colors, lime green, orange, powder blue etc. with opposing color stitching. Kind of a big but very temporary fad in the 70's. Very Wide lapels and very wide lapel shirts and you weren't allowed to wear a tie with them, hence the name "Leisure suit" by the end of the fad most people said they wouldn't be caught 'dead' in one. But no worries, almost no one, gets that joke. I just happened to I have a father who loved them. His favorite was black with orange stitching.

LOL The singer and the songs are correct. Those are songs sung by the great Harry Belafonte. An American of Jamaican descent, he popularized the music style of Caribbean calypso music to the world in the 1950's. Their language is Jamaican patois, a creole: English, with lots of French and West African language words thrown in. A little Spanish for good measure. For a bad Mexican American like me, English or Spanish, y'all talk funny 🤪

I've never got the meaning of the story of this movie, it never made sense to me.

Always figured they named it Beetlejuice because Americans can be a bit slow and they figured it would sell better.
Also kids could read/write it easier.

I can't do this anymore, Duaffy. Your editor's inserts of other shows and movies are just too distracting and downright annoying. I'm here for YOUR commentary, not his. Tell that clown to get his own channel.

I actually appreciate them. After all these years (and I saw this in the theaters in '88), I found out what Beetliejuice said when he said he could relate to Livia, calling her Edgar Allen Poe's daughter. Never could make out what he was saying.

Did you do all your own make up until the lipstick, then handed it over to Stevie Wonder.
