this whole piece is centered around the vocals. If you want to hear him without listen to most anything else he does. I consider this a rare treat by an amazing performer. Too bad for you that you can't share the same appreciation.
What an amazing piece. For those that can hear this as the masterpiece it is, don't worry about it. It took me about 25 years to understand it. The an is a true genius.
I just caught him and Flora Purim last night here in the Philippines for the Jazz Fest! Damn, it was f*ckin unbelievable! We got to jam with him on stage too... It's a real honor to be playing with the legends of Brazilian music. Legal! Greko, his guitar player was damn awesome! Actually, all of them were... Hope to see them back here SOON!
Saw this man yesterday at Jazz Middelheim. He played with Toots Thielemans, Kenny Werner, and Oscar Castro-Neves. He also performed a solo, simular to this video. It was breathtaking. After the solo I understood why Toots called him Maestro.
The people dissing Airto by watching this video are a manifestation of something that's wrong with society now. We now only seek instant gratification without looking deeper into the meaning of music, or art. What Airto is doing here is taking us through a tour of his roots: the Brazilian idiosyncrasy. And he does it by himself, with a handful of instruments, covering more than five different rhythms in different metrics (not only 4/4). Its in effect a freaking 5-minute trip to the Amazon
this makes me want to dance in the moonlight. This guy is percuassion fire and dragons in the midnight sky....Airto must be seen live to appreciate and this is the best next thing to it...don't miss him when he is in your town.
si hay un musico que es sincero con la musica y los musicos lo saben bien que en esta actividad la mentira esta prohibida como casi un juramento hipocratico de los medicos, bueno yo creo que don Airto es un gran ejemplo,un sacerdote de la musica sin duda.
Amongst his peers Airto is almost universally considered a genius (and those who don't think he's a genius say he is a virtuoso). It is ok, to be ignorant of something wonderful like this, and it can sound kind of funny first time (just like Uni or Caviar might taste funny at first), but that is only because your taste for it has not been developed. The fact that every other percussionist in the world says it is great, should give you the confidence to spend the time to develop the taste.
For some reason, Airto is annoying to some people... I think he's really fun to listen to and watch.. he's a percussive genious. and funny as hell! LOL
@crksmcgu obviously you have no clue who this legend is, google him and become enlightened before being disrespectful. Please feel free to '' bang things together'' and emulate him, then post the result, I'd love to see that.
mateenj42 playing 4 syncopations, introducing a rythmic vocal is'nt creative? If Miles rated Airto enough to have him in his band, as did other legends, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Reggie Workman, JJ Johnson, Cannonball Adderley, Lee Morgan, Paul Desmond and Joe Zawinul to name a few, forgive me if I take your (opnion) with a LARGE pinch of salt, unless you upload something better played by your self, I'd strongly suggest posting such slurs only make you look foolish.
pero entonces cual es el problema? si los vascos ,de los que yo vengo, tienen un cuento que yo conosco de chico ,y piensan c omo vos, siqueres te lo cuento ,pero no quiero que algun vasco de esos que yo se que hay ....
Talent like this is in your blood... You can't learn it... You have to be born into. Airto is a gift from GOD to human kind. Obrigado!

I met him last month and fortunate enough to have a chat with him ! He is one divine percussionist.
You have to imagine - "what is it like to do that?" "How does it feel ?" That's when you realize that this (like any of Airto's work) is cosmic !!

Love the bass drum sound, slow attack, warm and roomy.
