  • Come with me on a Sanibel Island beach walk and see what goodies will be on the beach today. The shells was good, but then the wind picked up and the shells were just rolling in! The digging out of the stranded boat probably helped. Any way you slide it - Sanibel was once again incredible!

Hi Sharmon. I am new to your weekly show and I am glad a transplant Floridian takes care of the natural resources that we have here. I enjoy your show. I left the gulf coast 5 decades ago, and have spent these years on the east coast. The waves are bigger here, and the shells are less. Seeing the shores of Sanibel was shocking for me, very sad. We would visit by boat, I do not remember a bridge, or roads or any housing. The beaches were so deep with shells that we would sink past our ankles in shells trying to walk the anchor line to shore to secure our dads' small boat. There were trees and scrub, all replaced by condos. I had always .meant to go back, now I know that I will not. Rather keep my black and white photos, and my memories of the magical shell island undisturbed.

It must have been amazing to see the island back then, but I will tell you the residents have really protected the island and more than half of it is preserved for nature. It's still a very special island. I'm sure nothing like it was when you visited as a kid but still a lovely place that will always have a special place in my heart ❤️

Think I know the feeling. My family annually took my brother and I camping in S.W Missouri to fish. My Dad had a jonboat and a rebuilt motorcycle and mini bike he got going. We had such good times
riding in the boat, nature walks and hobo dinners by the campfire !.
Then the Corps of Engineers flooded the whole area; the Indian points, covered bridge remains, wildlife, fossils and all, gone. My parents too. I haven't been back in ages,-- couldn't find my way on the new paved roads. The old one room school and persimmon trees, all gone under deep, murky water. Only wish we had taken more pictures !. P. S. I don't go anywhere since disability, but you bet, my heart and mind leave home every day, lol!.🐚💖

Oh what a lovely amount of live critters on todays adventure! It’s so nice to see their beautiful homes but even better when they are alive. What a shame that huge sandollar was damaged too. So pleased Sanibel is reenergising, I was sad when Ian caused so much destruction. Lovely vid as usual. Stay safe xx

Hello Beach Angel! I loved Sanibel when I was there as a teenager. I remember that there were so many shells that when the waves rushed in, the shells tumbled over each other and sounded like those wind chimes they sell at the souvenir shops. I scooped up a rucksack full of them and ran, dripping water all the way, back to the car of the person who brought me to the island. I made trinkets for years on the strength of that rucksack full of shells!
Oh, I like the buttercup lucines! They look like the sun shining on the water at sunrise.
If there were no shells, I know that the sea itself would call me home.
Pretty, pretty lightning whelks! Oh, what a pretty scallop! Gorgeous color! I can tell that I'm going to wear out my exclamation point on this trip!
Beautiful carditas! The true tulip isn't as "hippy" as the banded tulip, being narrower. Lovely coloring the pear whelk.
Ahhh. Beach Time! The waves are perfect today, just right to soothe a lost mermaid's soul. Thank you, my friend.
Nice paper fig! Glad it made it intact! That's an awfully lacy apple murex! Makes you wonder if there's a hybrid or a new subspecies.
Ha! That eight foot distance to a Florida Fighting Conch is about three football fields! It's all relative.
You are spoiled by all the treasure, darling Angel, and able to pick and choose. Don't ever apologize for the riches that the sea tosses at your feet!
Yes, do remember that you are fortunate to be nearly alone on the beach. In a few weeks, maybe not so much.
That's a pretty little apple murex!
I haven't seen that many hinged lucines in forever! May be the after effects of the red tide that was prevalent a few weeks back. I think they're filter feeders.
Oh, another quahog! Wonderful! I didn't know crown conchs came in brown! Beautiful! That orange and white Fighting Conch makes me think of a creamsicle!
Do you know why the left opening shells are called "sinistral?" I was told it's because left handed people were considered to be bad or sinister, so shells that opened on the left were called sinistral after us southpaws!
That is definitely a vertebral bone, very possibly from a bottle nosed dolphin. Note the height of the dorsal plate on the bone, providing strong muscular attachment. I may be wrong, but my study of marine mammals would indicate that. You should take it to class and verify the identity of the bone's former owner. There is something beautiful in its form. I like it a bunch! Before you keep it or sell it, you'd better make sure it didn't belong to a protected species. No sense paying a fine for a bone!
More lucines and a paper fig! You're doing very well today, girl! A wonderful shark eye and, wonder of wonders, a Junonia! Remember the old adage, "where there's one, there may be another!"
Oh, a hinged Atlantic cockle, how fun! That would make a nice jewelry box if you glue three or four little shells on one shell to make it stand still. Even if the hinge breaks in time, it can still be closed and opened. I'd buy it! It would be a great place to keep your pearls!
Oh, you're going to tease us with hints about next week! I can hardly wait, but I feel that way about all your videos! Until then, Beach Angel, take good care of yourself and keeping shelling!
Hi to all the other folks who love SWF Beach Life. So glad you're here, too!

I was curious about your question regarding dextral and sinistral so I looked it up. Allegedly sinistral is from the latin for "left" so I looked up left and you are right in the sense that left is "sinistra" but I also found "sinister" in the definitions as well. I think it might very well be from things that were different/sinister. And now that difference makes it so special 🥰

Melancholy for what has been lost, sadness for what will never be the same, then awe for people's unbroken spirits and the desire to rebuilt a place they love. Mix in a little fascination and gratitude and I have myself a trip to Sanibel 😂 There were so many shells I stopped and put some in my backpack but it still didn't help. Just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to finally getting my boxes of shells out! Many are up to 54 years old since found! I have 4 separate shell books & have wanted to get them out with shells & try to identify all of them! Some I had id’d over the years but raising kids, working etc, time & other things sidetracked me. I knew many but without getting my books out, thanks to your weekly beach walks, I was able to identify all but a couple! I want to clean them & wondered if it might be safe to put them in bleach soak at their ageI had 3 sand dollars, one had gotten broken & plan on using hydrogen peroxide on two remaining! I have one common nutmeg, one pear whelk, 5 shark eye ( two are Paul Neumann) & one possible gaudy natica I didn’t realize I had! I also found my coquina couple still hinged! And I believe one true tulip. Lots of lightning whelks , worm shells & various pieces of corral! I think the biggest surprise was finding I had one operculum of a star shell like you found on Honeymoon Beach! I’ve always been a vacation sheller on beach near St. Petersburg & love west coast beaches the best! Now I am retired & hope I get to go shelling on some of those beaches you frequent! All are so beautiful!! Thank you again for bringing back my love of shelling❤️

It's kind of interesting with the shells - you could have found them 30 years ago but they'll look just like new! That must have been fun going back through your collection. I LOVE going to flea markets and thrift store looking to see if there are any shells around. I can't bring myself to buy any but I sure like looking. I hope you do get back out there to find some goodies to add to your collection! 🐚

Ok. That FFC at 12 min was definitely a keeper!😂 And the LW's were out in droves! Yep, a vertebra. That was a big one so probably shark or dolphin. I've never seen Sanibel that deserted. I guess since the waterfront places are still closed, people are just not coming much yet... Thanks Sharmon! xxoo

The coned shaped shells... "the critters" living inside, as they grow they look for abandoned shells from others like them. So that's actually real estate for the sea life.

Loved the lightning welk that had an obvious repair. So unusual.. you have taught me to notice those things & I'm grateful. They are more than just shells because of you! THANKS! ~ ~ One of the books on shells that I read says that Fla. Fighting Conch will stuff its foot in a bi-valve shell opening & not allow it to close. Then it will consume the inner animal without opening it further.. Is that correct?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Год назад

That is not correct - the Florida Fighting Conchs only eat algae. They may be fighting conchs but they are really lovers ❤️
