Used to be 2 of those in Sandpoint Alaska. They were installed in 1947 and ran without overhaul well into the 1980's. You could hear them all over town. I was just a young teenager and id go to the Aleutian Cold Storage shop just to watch them run. Engineer there told me they only get shut down for oil change and started back up. 350RPM
hard to believe they were never rebuild in 40 years. There is no wear free engine Wonder how often they chaned the oil I guess they were used for generating electricity?
Our family Ranch in texas has a fairbanks morse like this installed 1930s 1960s it was placed in stand by auxiliary power .. well different times it has been Used .. 2021 massive snow ice storm it ran one month -- non stop no issues it always has been maintained 100% and concrete building protection from elements I think it is a 250 kw unit not sure but definitely 4 cylinder .. has to power main house bunk house barns one horses one for dairy cows and full Machine shop in business since 1930 .. its nice to see these running , but its best to use it for purpose it was built for like ours. Great video Thanks
I love that sound! a testament to innovation of the time that it runs so flawlessly today. thank to those that decided to display it in working order. 👍👏
I am a lifelong engineer and these engines PUT ME TO SLEEP it is MUSIC to an old engineer! I love Fairbanks Morse - some of the old engines actually blow smoke rings out the tail pipe!👍👍👍
I go see this particular engine run every year in goochland, VA. FIELD DAY OF THE PAST is the name of the event they have it a weekend every september!
VWs are no worse than any other brand. It's just that they got caught doing what every other manufacturer has gotten away with. Their only fault was not being sneaky enough. That's how the game is played these days.
Yeah there's this brilliant well meaning blues musician on here called Bottle neck John who has this habit of recording blues songs to the pitter patter of fine olde worlde engines like this. It would make an amazing beat box for a good tune!
Back when electric power was cheap and reliable. Just about every town had one of these and a reliable bunch of hard working guys to keep the lines maintained. The guys actually climbed the poles with pole climbers strapped to legs and shoes.
Jazzy jas that's full throttle .they only 3_4 hundred rpm. gen .was probably DC. Fairbanks mustave had a foundary .could survive a hurricane even god wouldn't take er.
I could off had one of these FB Morse units, twice the size of this unit, for free. It was at the old Garland, Texas original downtown power plant that was being commercially repurposed. Just did not have the money to pay to have it moved. Even talked to the last guy that ran her before the plant was mothballed.
K.C. LeJeune I heard that some would run on one cylinder at low to no load, and others if adjusted by a skilled mechanic would run on all four at no load.
I love how 73 year hold engine it works like brand New.... probably never by opening to rectify......I want to see this new generation to see how is car/engine is not working after few months.....
Same as a 4 stroke. It does not breathe thru the crank case.like a weed whacker engine so it has normal pressure oiling on journals and connecting rods.
kimmer6 The air intake is in the crankcase, look at the pictures. On the same side as the exhaust at the bottom.I know this because i have seen other engine decriptions of the same exact type of fairbanks morse diesel
Yes..and my Detroit Diesel 3-53 also has a blower on the side and intake ports in the cylinder sleeves. But it is completely isolated from the crank case which has standard crankshaft oiling. The intake ports on this FM are in their own gallery and are not exposed to the crank case air.
kimmer6 Then what forces the exhaust out?On the detroit diesel the supercharger does the work of forcing the exhaust out and a fresh charge in.Since the fairbanks is not supercharged and you say the downstroke of the piston does not do it what does? Also i have heard from another source that the mains are lubricated by a wick system like an old electric motor.
kimmer6 You can read about how these engines are scavenged and lubricated at Oldengine.org.They have an online copy of a 1940 FM manual. The print is kinda small but readable.
Engines like these will run forever.

That's sweet! Do you know how often they would change the oil?
hard to believe they were never rebuild in 40 years. There is no wear free engine

this is my favorite sounding engine EVER, and its been 76 years since this was made, im so shocked.
It's so awesome to hear in-person

The way things look today yall may need it again soon. Love these machines

This.... the sound of a kitten/cat purring and rain falling on an iron roof....
All beautiful sounds to fall asleep to.
Wow! Just too cool!
She sounds perfectly happy to work.
The view ports are fascinating
That mighty old rock crusher will still be running long after we're dead of old age...
I am a lifelong engineer and these engines PUT ME TO SLEEP it is MUSIC to an old engineer! I love Fairbanks Morse - some of the old engines actually blow smoke rings out the tail pipe!👍👍👍
Well said! awesome engine. thanks for commenting sir!
The way that thing rumbles is almost musical. It's the original "heavy metal", literally lol.
The perfect engine to power a music system!
I like those old engines, they never die! Not like todays crap
It could play the same tune for 100 years, without stopping... .
What a satisfying beat! Nice to hear one of these huge engine running properly and not misfiring and farting.
wow..I could fall asleep to that beautiful sound!!
this one is playing music.
Oghey
Loved when you put the camera in front of the exhaust!! 😍😍
The best ever I have heard of any internal combustion engines
man you could dance to this engine's sound
You're right, just has that nice beat to it, idk the genre it could go into tho... Hell make it dubstep I say
Justin Noker techno, or industrial
Haha👍👍👍👍👍
Indian would like the beat
Psytrance
Amazing sounding Engine !
I go see this particular engine run every year in goochland, VA. FIELD DAY OF THE PAST is the name of the event they have it a weekend every september!
I love these engines as they sounds is specific !
Best video capture of old iron I've seen. thanks
Thank you sir
That's a heck of a beat though!
still runs cleaner than modern vw's

@@MFKR696 this
This what a turn of the century night club sounds like?
Love the sound.
That thing could run like that for years without shutdown it runs so leisurely
Fairbanks-Morse perfected the 2-stroke diesel. No valves, no springs, no rockers, no pushrods and no cam.
Yeah there's this brilliant well meaning blues musician on here called Bottle neck John who has this habit of recording blues songs to the pitter patter of fine olde worlde engines like this. It would make an amazing beat box for a good tune!
The original industrial techno
Sounds exactly like underground part of my local pub 🔥💪😎
Lol
Hammer Sound.
It sounds like someone playing a drum beat sounds fantastic
1:28 thats engine music right there.
That has a great sound.
I'd love to have one of those plants because old engines are cool and I'd use it for backup power lol.
Wonderful days when fuel oil was 3 cents per gallon.
Back when electric power was cheap and reliable. Just about every town had one of these and a reliable bunch of hard working guys to keep the lines maintained. The guys actually climbed the poles with pole climbers strapped to legs and shoes.
I retired from fm after 40 years very cool place
lol, the engine sounds just like the beat of a song lol
I knew exactly what this was and thought it looked familiar! I realized why when I saw the location card and sign at the beginning 😂
I played my guitar over this, makes a pretty good drum backing track...
somebody needs to sync up the thomas the tank engine theme to this!
I cant get this out of my head now. its got funk and kids programs mixed in.
coolbluelights [irony intensifies]
Freakin' awesome sound. Somebody ought to sample it for a trance track! lol
Oh Yeah 🎵🎶🎧🔈🔉🔊🥁🤓😎🤩
Man, i could dance to this beat xD
SO QUEIT MAN, THEY NEED TO BRING THIS TYPE POWER!!
….I have been working on big old Waukesha and Cooper Superior engines for 30 years. 3 more years left
Great cadence. :)
PARABÉNS ! MUITO BOM...
Hermosos motores.
Good sound
Did Trent Reznor compose this generator?
👍👍👍вот это машинка,пёрдь-пёрдь и ещё лет100 работать будет
Good drum beats
It sounds like : chaka choko chaka choko chaka choko chaka choko chaka choko. Really nice idle
Jazzy jas that's full throttle .they only 3_4 hundred rpm. gen .was probably DC. Fairbanks mustave had a foundary .could survive a hurricane even god wouldn't take er.
In December 2088, someone walks into an overgrown forest ......... What's that noise !!!! 😳
No doubt Sarge. Will run for many many years
Sounds good
Nothing beats a 4 cylinder
They ran about twice the rpm that this one is running. Play @ 2x.
This motor is idling
I wonder what the realistic fuel burn an hour would be on an engine like this.
Там ломатся нечему
Hear the sound bois!

This isn't far from us. I want to see this in person. Is there a display of museum with this as part of the collection?
I want one in my back garden....wonder what the neighbours would think?
Definitely running on one cylinder.
K.C. LeJeune I heard that some would run on one cylinder at low to no load, and others if adjusted by a skilled mechanic would run on all four at no load.
Wonder what power it made in kw
Sounds like
"Musseltuffel musseltuffel"
Thegamer4332 It really does hahaha!
Sound like Sigue Sigue Sputnik-Love missile
Great
Holaa, alguien sabe que utilidad le daban a estos tremendos motores?
Is beautifull this sounds suoss
O som desse motor é música.
Yeah it does
someone should record the sound and wright a song and use it !
why is there so little oil in the crankcase and around the rod bearings?
@Kathleen Shaw There are NO reed valves on this type of engine.
@Kathleen Shaw I always thought they were piston-port induction, compression & exhaust.
Gut, gut, gut
Chunk-a-meat-an-two-potato-chunk-meat-an-two-potato-chunk-a-meat-an-two potato (endlessly)!
nice machine but in bad visual shape give it some love and paint please
That isn't diesel sound, that is musik 🎶
it sounds like the triple expansion engine the rms titanic and her sister ships had
can the generator still turn on incandescent lamps? 🤔
Jetzt jemand mit einer Banjo oder Gitarre dazu, gäbe bestimmt ein geiler Song.
Why do people dislike this video?
drum set!!!
The Devil Went Down to Georgia
That thing probably makes about 60 HP and 2000 LBS of torque@ 100 RPM LOL....
300hp if u twist it up
Thats a big ass 3 cylinder
4*
I love how 73 year hold engine it works like brand New.... probably never by opening to rectify......I want to see this new generation to see how is car/engine is not working after few months.....

chugga boom, chugga boom.
How are the mains lubricated if it's a two stroke?

Never understood how these are supposed to generate diesel
Is that at field day of the past?
Yes
BLUE SMOKE
Na und? Ist doch cool
It's the Inception Trailer Theme! { Insert BAAAWWWWWWWWWWMMMMMM }
I wonder how much torque 🤔?
Enough to Jumpstart dead planets.
