Regarding the girl in the lake that gets shot, look into the arch of hysteria. The pose she dies in is related to that. Jeffrey Dahmer would leave his victims in that pose after he killed them and famously in conspiracy circles, Tony Podesta (Jon Podesta's brother of Clinton campaign fame) has a gold statute of this pose in his house that drew a lot of attention. I think it's a nod to that, since this movie has a lot related to real life conspiracy rabbit holes (the owls are a big part of that too)
The shot from above Sam's head when he watches the Gaynor movie, displays clearly suicidal tendencies that are then interrupted by the movie's 'positive messages'.
The pool scene with Marilyn is from her last and unfinished movie Something's Gotta Give. Although the movie was never completed (except for a short version made out of rushes), images and photographs taken on set are now even more famous than the film itself : looking at them, we know Marilyn was gonna disappear soon after. And to many her death remains a mystery, which adds even more mystery and possible interpretations to UTSL. But I think that specific scene mostly evoques the final moments of the fleeting dream that was Marilyn Monroe / Sarah.
Columbus represents voyage and discovery. Like him or not he helped put the Americas on the map. In 14 and ninty, 2 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Sam passes through the gate to begin his initiation. The writer takes him to the inner sanctum where he keeps the treasure (key to knowledge). Sam later picks up where the writer drops off and continues until he resolves the mystery and learns Sara's fate.
One of the three woman who participate in the cult, describes a dark pool..--- reference to John Muir's description of a place in nature in California ? ;) I think its just a hommage to that stretch of nature, where all this could happen if it were happening irl. Its so complex.. thanks for getting us further with your vids!
In my mind the skunk spray symbolized the burden of knowledge that Sam took on the minute he met Sarah and the chain of events began. Normal people who know nothing about the sex bunkers comment on Sam's bad smell when he talks about things related to the rabbit hole.
That's an interesting interpretation, I talk about what the Skunk and Dark Figure symbolize to me in Part 4 if you haven't checked that out. Thanks for watching!
If you got back to the money you will also see an icon of the garden of Eden. This and the Owl cult are a metaphor that knowledge/wisdom in the story is tied to death. Our main character is a Christ figure given a resurrection in truth and a new view on the way society has used and abused women, specifically in Hollyweird.
Why do you draw a connection between Christopher Columbus and 1492 with the Egyptian doorway? What does he have to do with Egypt? Also I think your analysis of the skunks and the body moving is a stretch. Maybe there is a connection but what is it supposed to mean in relation to the film and its themes? Symbolism has to have a point, otherwise it's meaningless. I really don't think Sam is schizophrenic either. What would be the point of that? What is David Robert Mitchell trying to say by that? What would that have to do with anything that happens in the film? If the Owl's kiss represents suicide I would think her method of killing people would be more similar to that of suicide. As you point out, cutting your own throat is unorthodox, and she has apparently killed a lot of people with a knife, if I recall correctly. Sam does not appear to be particularly depressed or suicidal when she is about to kill him either. I don't agree with everything you say but I think you have some good points too.
I appreciate your opinion on a number of those points, but I would suggest watching my first and third videos if you haven’t already. I dive into a number of those points further.
Also, as I stated in the video, Sam walks directly through the doorway with the hieroglyphs on it and still misinterprets what to tombs are - he believes them to be bomb shelters until the end of the film. Parallel: Christopher Columbus was seeking India and other eastern countries, but landed in America instead. Instead of accepting that he’d landed in the wrong location, he calls the native Americans Indians, although they are not Indian. It’s a connection between their failure to recognize the significance and actual nature of their ‘discovery’.
Additionally, I address some of the directors thoughts in my third video. We are seeing ALL of the events of the film through Sam’s eyes. I think it’s short sighted to assume that Sam doesn’t ‘seem’ suicidal, although we already know that he’s incredibly paranoid and unstable. It’s also unfair and shortsighted of Sam to assume that the author was not suicidal as in our culture it’s still taboo to talk about and many people who suffer from depression or have harbored thoughts of suicide become very good at masking those behaviors or signs. I appreciate your feedback, again, but I disagree on several points.
@@Tdurdenreturnssomevideotapes Still a bit of a stretch in my opinion with the Egyptian doorway but fair enough. With Sam being alone in the apartment before the Owl shows up, I don't see any reason why he would be masking any depression. He doesn't seem depressed to me at any point in the film, same with the author. So I don't see any reason to believe the Owl would represent suicide. Especially considering her method of killing. Anyway, thanks for the videos. This movie deserves more analysis for sure.
American Indians built large earthen mounds that had people as deities buried with virgin females. They were sun Worshippers just like ancient Egyptians. Both built large pyramid structures with humans inside for leaders. They are celestial place markers as well.

These vids are terrific work. Maybe sam is the owls kiss since when he poses at the end his shadow on his left looks like her silhouette

Not to mention the fact that Sarah also wears the same type of white dress Monroe wore in the subway scene from The Seven Year Itch.
