    Super strength and durability could imply that we could use our fingers to minimize surface area, making fingerpunches incredibly effective. Call it the backup dagger of a superstrong and durable person. Combat sports like jiu jitsu, which favor grappling over striking, would be incredibly advantageus as well. You could simply squeeze and crumble people to death, although that would be gruesomely graphic.

      The "Eragon" universe would allow for a fight like that, since they specifically mention that the dragon riders are so powerful, that just hitting something with a normal sword (like a wall or other sword) would quickly dent or break the blade.

    Some of the super strength issues like breaking things when trying to lift them could make for an interesting plot. Instead of the classic "I don't control my own strength" a super strong character could have full control over the strength but be ignorant to the ways it actually works(so maybe he would need a friend with lots of knowledge about physics that helps him apply his power efficiently). If someone tries to make a book out of it, I believe the friend should be called Shad

Assuming you have super strength but not super-mass (but definitely super durability since you would basically just rip yourself apart otherwise), you basically just pitch a baseball made of a strong material. You're letting go of most of the momentum you generate except for the momentum of your arm and rotation of your body. Super strength, I would say that another conversation I have had in this comment section has a point. Super heavy gauntlets, perhaps made of depleted uranium (modern day), or a combination of steel and lead (medieval), to increase the weight behind every punch. Spikes would help. Alternatively, I would say. Large club or mace, again, possibly spiked.
      Teleportation is an interesting power to consider a weapon for. I would probably say a bow. Being able to pepper your opponent and deny them the ability to close the distance. But melee, perhaps a spear? Keeping your opponent at a distance and harrying them from various angles.

    Love the video but you have a MAJOR misconception about how muscle fibers work Shad:
    Slow twitch fibers and fast twitch fibers aren't called slow or fast because they create fast or slow movements. They are to distinguish muscles fibers which produce low amounts of force for very long periods of time (slow twitch) or great amount of force for a short amount of time (fast twitch). Slow twitch fibers use oxygen to be very energy efficient, but cant produce massive amount of force at once. They are relatively weak, but have high endurance. Marathon runners for example have exeptionally good developed slow twitch fibers (yet they aren't running slow in any way)
    Fast twitch fibers need much less oxygen, and can produce much stronger contractions, resulting in more force output (which, depending on training, can result in both more speed AND strength). However, they fatigue very quickly, often depleting there energetic potential within seconds, before having to recover. Both powerlifters (strength) and Boxers (speed) train in a way to improve their fast twitch fibers.
    So, in regards to the biology of super strength, having enhanced slow twitch fibers WON'T make you super strong, it will give you super human endurance. Enhanced fast twitch fibers would give you both super strength AND super speed, and which one is more dominant depends on how well you brain is able to send signals to your motor units (bundled muscle fibers) quickly, and how many motor units it can access at once.
    Hope that helped clear things up a little bit, still like the video, just had to address it.
    Keep up the good work.

      Thanks for clarifying! This is a good explanation! Hope Shad can make a follow-up video now lol.
      Basically, holding constant skill/technique (i.e., neurological ability to contract muscle groupings to produce a movement efficiently), someone who is stronger is always faster; the more force your muscles produce, the faster the limbs move, and the Laster the limbs move, the faster the weapon moves. This is why big strong dudes in HEMA are a damn nightmare to fight... They don't only hit harder, but their weapon also moves way faster, and they can use weapons with more mass and greater reach.

He had to specialize in his lower body mass being an issue, being more like the motor to the sword and having to use the economy of motion. He used his super strength to spring far and wide and had to spin and tumble when he missed in a martial arts recovery. Being super-strong does not mean you have the mass and leverage to not have other issues, great video Shadiversity.

    Shad, that bit about some of the issues with weapon size came up in Utawarerumono. The character Karura is so strong that she cant use regular weapons as when she swings them she'll just break them as soon as they hit something. She once tried to get around this by basically taking two swords and staking them on top of each other, but even that wasn't enough.
    She eventually had to have a sword custom made for her strength. Problem was that in order to fit her requirements, the sword ended up so big and thick that it was more of a huge club with a sharpened edge than a sword. Additionally, it was so heavy that even the biggest and strongest warriors around could hardly lift the thing off its stand. Karura was the only one able to wield it.

      I mean a log is super heavy, too, but it doesn't just bend and break in half, unless you excessive force on a single point. And if we go with that much force, you'd not bend the thing, you'd just plunge your hand into the material instead.

      @ashtongiertz8728 3 года назад

      This is why I think weapons are actually a hindrance when you have super strength. Making a weapon that doesn't break when you use it would be a huge and costly undertaking, and even it's inevitably going to break because repeated use would wear down on the weapon.

      @matteste 3 года назад

      @@ashtongiertz8728 The price bit was actually mentioned in the work I brought up, and suffice to say, it was expensive enough to sting even in the coffers of a local king.
      And another thing that also came up was that the sword was later inherited by another character who also was strong enough to wield it. Problem is that said character lacks the mass to wield it as effectively as it's prior wielder, and as a result, the sword is swinging her around just as much as she is swinging it.

      Yeah, but a bar bell has weights at both ends of it. The problem with a really heavy sword is the pressure that it puts on the point where the blade ends and the tang begins. If you’re swinging a 220 lb bar of still which ends in a tang capable of being held by human hands (so excluding the Hulk hand scenario), the chances that repeated strikes will not put extreme pressure on that point are really low.

    Pretty sure he can go several times faster than the speed of light to be honest.
    Comic book superheroes get pretty out there.
    Hulk also has super-speed though. Not as crazy-fast as Superman, but he can run at hundreds of miles per hour at the absolute minimum, and he's fought (and defeated) characters who, like Superman, go at or beyond the speed of light themselves, such as the Silver Surfer etc (also he can see ghosts).
    Pretty much every super-strong character in comics also possesses super-human speed, at least implicitly, based on their showings and on the type of opponents they get pitted against.

Say you're swinging a sword at someone trying to cut through their left arm with a horizontal strike, you want the sword to go as far as it can, even through their torso, not to just strike the arm. Or if you're punching someone in the nose, you don't aim for the nose, you aim for behind the nose, even the back of the skull(as my old sifu once said) so you can impart the maximum amount of force, you want to keep the acceleration as high as possible when you make contact. Bloody, top-notch video, dude

    On the subject of super strength and weapons being destroyed by the forces, I was expecting to hear you actually talk about the way a hammer resolves much of this conflict.
    By placing the mass at the end of a lever, be it something on the measure of a maul, or even as small as a single-handed mallet, something rather interesting happens. The shaft has very little mass, and therefore experiences very weak forces upon impact IF you do not continue to apply pressure through the strike. In practice, when using a weapon of such mass, this is the proper practice regardless of super strength because the energy of the hammer is already a multiple of the effort used to accelerate the head to that point, meaning any forced follow-through is a tiny fraction of additional energy transfer, and simply not worth the exertion involved.
    By this means, a solid mass with enough toughness to withstand the impact (achievable by simply making it very large) on the end of a lever is an ideal weapon for super strength. All you need do is accelerate it as hard as you can, and let the weight of the hammer carry that multiplied energy into the target. The only limitation at that point is a haft must be strong enough to both support the weight of the head and the forces of the initial acceleration. This is not as big of a problem as it might seem. An ordinary steel bar used for power lifting can hold over 400kg.
    If you placed just 100kg on one end of such a bar and had the strength to swing it at the same speed an average person can swing a 20lb sledge hammer, the forces would be almost incomprehensible by human standards.

    Heavy armor covered with hooked spikes. Then dual wield... In one hand, a heavy duty sword catcher with a pointed end so that it can thrust. And in the other hand, a very heavy club with a large spike at the end. Both weapons don't need to be that long, baseball bat length would be perfect for super quick movements. The armor or sword catcher would trap attacks then the club could strike... shattering them. Both weapons would do massive bludgeoning damage, you'd also be able to do thrusting with the point and with the spike you'd be able to hook opponents, spike shields and tear them away or puncture whatever needs a hole.

    One interesting thing they did in the Live-Action adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin is what they did with Sanosuke's sword; it was much wider in the comics, but they slimmed it down considerably. Also, even the comics took into account the thing you pointed out about the blade by having Sano explain that his sword really didn't have much of an edge anymore, but he could still use it to smash and crush. A question to consider here alongside wearing heavy armour with super strength is the actual durability of your body. I was taking a trip to Ireland recently and I had to carry a heavy backpack around with me - and while I could carry it around with me without any issues, when I got to our destination and I looked at myself in the mirror I had huge black bruises on my shoulders because of the amount of weight pressing down on my skin had damaged the stuff underneath it. I'm sure the vast majority of people are also aware of the issues with lifting really heavy things with your hands - this results in blisters, skin getting worn off your fingers, bleeding and more nasty stuff. If you were identically the same as you are now but you decided to just lift a giant boulder above your head you would likely just dislocate your shoulders and injure your hands regardless of the actual strength of your muscles!

    In my humble opinion, the best weapon for someone with super strength and not speed (assuming increased mass from both heavy armor and body destiny... I mean, density) would be a longer warhammer, sort of like a halberd, which I call a "Battlehammer", with a large head weighing about half the weight of the user (without armor). This head has one end dedicated to pure blunt force trauma, while the other side is a large, sturdy, triangular spike. This spike is sharpened on the inside edge, and works like a heavy, two-handed kama, in that it pierces and then pulls with a cutting edge, making a terrifying tool to rend flesh. There is also a razor-sharp spear point on the end, in line with the haft. The haft itself is probably either enchanted or made of fantasy wood, to support the massive forces surrounding the weapon. There is also a pommel on the other side, which can be used to strike in a pinch. What you're left with is a brutal fantasy weapon of mass destruction, capable of handling nearly any foe. Got a heavily armored opponent? Just batter him down with the maul end. A large creature (such as, well, a Dragon) charging you down? Use their momentum to your advantage, shove that foot-long spike deep in the chest of the monster, and let them run by as your battlehammer disembowels them with their own insignificant weight. Close quarters? Choke up the handle, and use the spear head, with light, fast jabs and slashes that bear a high amount of mass behind them. Let them raise their shields against you; bash them apart, or perhaps hook the spike around the top, pulling it down with gravity alone to thrust the spear point forward at your powerless enemy's exposed heart. And remember, the weight you can bring to bear to push around your enemies is second to none; knock them down, shove them aside, for they will NEVER move you.

    Brief response to a point you mentioned:
    You very briefly touched on the notion that a super-strong individual might be better suited to rending and tearing than to adopting better armament. I'd just like to mention that this bears out in nature. The "super strength" of chimpanzees is such that a grown male chimp can snap a 300-pound test cable without too much hassle. Although they will frequently pick up weapons for hurling, they seem to (usually) prefer simply tearing their foes limb from limb in a close-up scrap. Some have said that this is due to the tendency of branches (even thick ones) to "give" under the force a chimp can bring to bear, and that they are more efficient simply hammering with knuckle-strikes or grasping and wrenching. Younger chimps *do* seem more prone to grab a handy tool for striking others, while older (more experienced?) apes will forego these implements.
    Naturally, there's an argument to be made for culture here. Maybe the older apes are showing off by showing they don't need any tools. Would they still act the same if they had ready access to steel? The only way to find out would to be to hand a bunch of angry apes some rebar, so I doubt we'll find out anytime soon - but I find it interesting that these inhumanly-strong, rather human-like fighters have come to the same conclusions you have.
