I've seen Harland live with Charles Lloyd, and he's got to be the most inventive percussionist I've ever seen. He stole the show. Ceaselessly inventive.

@@lieutenantcolumbo114 as a drummer I’d have nightmares about having to play this far away from the rest of the band. Always better for the drums to be close to the band or at least the rhythm section especially the bass.

Hi dear friend, actually you are correct. Being far from the band it's really hard for a drummer.
And like you wrote, especially far from the bass player . It's really to play far for the bassist.
I played drum for a church, and ouch was a hard experience, cause the sounds were terrible, far from the band . And surprisingly the sounds was really great in the church for the member but for us musicians.. it was so painful.
I have heard Caravan done by so many drummers. And of course many many drummers have done this and showed their skill. There was only one drummer that did this back in the early l960s who blew the socks off every drummer ever. Who was this man? The one the only BUDDY RICH. I know Buddy has left us but I have yet to see a drummer come close to the exceptional talents of Buddy Rich. Tell it like it is Buddy Rich was never ever meant to be forgotten. Buddy Rich was the beginning and end of drumming period. Case Closed
As great as Buddy was, you can’t compare him to other jazz drummers like Elvin, Tony, Roy, and even Eric Harland here. He may have been the greatest jazz showman but you can’t say he’s done much to progress jazz or jazz drumming. I’m not saying mentioning him is a disgrace or anything and I still give him props since he’s who inspired me on the drums first, but calling him the greatest is a bit naive.
