Just finished my very first batch, thanks to your teachings they came out amazing! I even used a nat geo tumbler but with some patience I am very happy with the results. Thank you!!! I would’ve given up if I had just followed the directions without any googling

Love rocks of the Great Lakes. My easy access lake is Lake Ontario and like seeing the potential finds at the Great Lakes. Great Job and Looking forward to more of these similar videos.
I have several older videos of Great Lakes tumbled rocks too, and I'll be making more in the future. I have a couple more barrels of finds from last summer running in the tumbler right now.

Another great video. I just wish I could follow behind you on your rock hunts so I could pick up and keep all of your rejects! LOL. I like rocks tumbled and left in their more natural shape, but your enthusiasm for perfection in tumbling also makes your videos so interesting. It is a joy to see someone love what they do. ROCK ON!
I really need to do a video where I tumble a batch of rocks more the way you prefer them. I'd love to know what percent of people prefer your way over my way of tumbling. There are definitely a lot of people in both camps.
It's fun how everyone likes different things. I would never consider spraying my rocks with a coating since that seems unnatural to me (I know I should never say never). But somehow tumbling them until they're a completely unnatural shape seems completely okay to me. Weird.
I loved the cloudy one with depth after the prehnite one. I chuckled when I saw the one that was long and green thinking cucumbers then you said pickle rock and you nailed it.👍
Beautiful! I’m partial to jasper because my favorite color is red. I loved the black and red together. You had an unknown rock there that reminded me of Candy corn! And now a pickle rock is on my hunting list! Thank you for sharing your treasure!
Another great batch! It's nice to see you tumbling rocks with imperfections. I think it's a good example of what can be achieved with some patience and proper technique/experience as well as provide beginners with realistic expectations. I think I miss out on a lot of beauty lately because I've been setting my standards a little too high 😅
I really liked the first rock. I kind of like the quartz ones although they often have fractures in them. The sweet gherkin was cool too ! They all were great, nice video.
At 1:46, the light color rock that simulated a fossil, & that you suggested could be banded chert was my favorite. Was really impressed w/ the clarity of multiple bands so evenly spaced apart. Nice box of work. Always enjoy these vids.
I have a few more planned, although not recored yet. I probably have enough Michigan rocks in the tumbler right now to do two more of my own finds and several boxes of rocks that I bought that I could do videos on.
Can you imagine what a kitchen countertop would look like with polished rocks from Michigan imbedded in recycled glass and made into a slab? Gosh that would be beautiful!
@@MichiganRocks I've seen countertops made with recycled glass chips that are beautiful, but I don't know what other material is mixed with it. Probably some man-made solid surface counter product. But if the glass chips were replaced with different sized thin slabs of rocks that were polished, can you imagine the beauty of it?

That's great. It's always nice to hear about kids who do stuff like that rather than living their whole lives glued to a screen of some sort. Of course, rock related RUclips videos are perfectly fine!
I will call them moldy pudding stones since they look to be past their sell by date. LOL Lots of nice rocks today. My favorites are usually the ones with transparent or iridescent parts.
The very first "boring" stone I found to be gorgeous. The pudding stones are too. Would you sell some? I might make ring of some obsidian. In Tennessee there's not much variety. Thank for the video! ❤😊
I had several people tell me that the first one was not boring, so you're not alone. I just prefer more contrasting colors in rocks, or at least really bright colors. I don't sell any of my tumbled rocks.
You like stripes....that U.P. looking rock is stunning...take a pic and send it to Lake Superior magazine....I sent one that had a cloud that looked like the U.P. I'm published!
I was excited to learn recently that God is also a rock collector, see 1 Peter 2:5, no joke. Then someone pointed out to me that we're getting polished from our rough state.
It took me a minute, but I think I see it. Is the panther sticking up in the middle? Is it where the Keweenaw Peninsula would be if this was a map of the U.P.
The rock at 4:25 probably is agate. I have a few agates that look like that with tubes and teeth like structures. Sometimes u find strange not so well formed agate

No, I wouldn't be opposed to that at all. It's not something I've hardly ever done though. I'd be more likely to throw it back in the coarse stage with some other rocks and then run it through the Lot-O again.
@@MichiganRocks I especially like unikite, and would enjoy seeing more of what you can do with it. I am trying to learn about and am just starting to collect rocks that are pink, green, or a combination of both.
I use a lot of unakite to make Christmas ornaments, crosses, and the bottoms of turtles I make. Sometimes I prefer just green epidote, which is the green mineral in unakite. Rob, I would love to be able to buy rocks you find, polished or not. I started rock collecting just this year, but am 76 and can't go out hunting myself. You have a great eye for choosing rocks, great talent for polishing, and your videos are just wonderful.

I know, I never regret spending an extra week or two tumbling a rock, but I always regret missing a spot that could have been removed by just a little more tumbling.

Loving your videos! I'm just starting out on my rock polishing journey and can't find 500 aluminum oxide in the UK. I can get silicone carbide for the 3rd stage polishing but really like the look of the 500 aluminum oxide. Can you recommend a possible alternative to the 500 aluminum oxide for the 3rd stage? Thank you!
What if you tumbled halite in oil? After some thinking, I don't think it's a good idea to tumble with acetone. Acetone weakens plastics and is very flammable. Maybe you could try this at some point.
Being a rock expert, do me a favor. Take a look at the Great pyramid of Giza. I'm thinking it must be hundreds of thousands of years old. No way it's 4-5 thousand.
I'm not a rock expert by any stretch of the imagination. I have never taken a geology class. I'm pretty good at tumbling rocks and I can manage to make a cabochon and a few other things. I'd trust whatever the experts say about the pyramids.
quick question as i just recently started tumbling. I have what looks like a Wishing stone (about a half in middle quartz band) and i want to pulish it without losing to much of the rock. will it do anything to the rock if i skip stage one? or any advice on keeping the rock as close as possible to where it is now but polish it?
I never skip stage one. If you only do one week in stage one, you shouldn't lose much size unless it's a really soft rock. You could test it by trying to scratch it with a knife. If the knife leaves a streak of metal on the rock, then I'd throw it in the first stage. Of course, I can't guarantee anything, so proceed at your own risk!
All beautiful rocks! I wanted to ask you last time. But what vibratory tumbler would u recommend? I remember u saying that u weren't very pleased with the newer Lotto vibratory tumblers...thanks
I have heard from a good source that the motor situation might be getting better. I'd personally still take a chance on the Lot-O. I haven't personally tried any others, so I can't really make any other recommendations.

My mom found a heavy, dark blue, turquoise-ish rock up there and we are trying to identify it! I wanted to post a pic but apparently I can't. Any suggestions?? In areas that are chipped off, it is light turquoise, but the rock itself, about the size of a roma tomato, is VERY dark blue/green.
I know you're kidding, Jeff, but that's the basic problem. I like some sort of contrast. When a rock is mostly monochrome, it doesn't do much for me unless it's a really interesting color. The first rock lacked color and contrast. Of course, we all have different tastes, so I'm not surprised that someone else might really like that one.

Yall talk about chirt from time to time but what is it? Because down here in Alabama, chirt is that crappy gravel (concrete/dirt, hence the name "chirt") that they put on the roads before they pave them. And yes, we have 0aved roads in Alabama 😂
Chert is a microcrystalline quartz like jasper or agate. I have tried to research the difference between chert and jasper and it's very confusing. It sort of depends on who you talk to. A friend of mine told me that if the color is kind of boring, it's called chert, but if it's a pretty color, it's called jasper. He was joking, but I don't think that's too far from the truth. Chert is one of my favorite things to find if it's a really nice banded chert.
@Michigan Rocks the chert pieces I've seen you do have been almost breath taking, I wish I could find some. I just started my tumbling journey last week (after having a tumbler, but no grit for like a year lol) so I've got plenty of time, but nice rocks are hard to come by in Alabama

You're right about the cracks in quartz. It's fun when you find one that isn't cracked. That first one was a little plain for me. I like more pizazz!

Yeah, that's a mystery of a rock to me. Doesn't look exactly like fossils I have seen before and it doesn't look exactly like banded chert either.

I don't sell my tumbled rocks. I sell a few things, like some pendants and Christmas ornaments made of rocks, but this is mostly just a hobby.

No, I wouldn't be opposed to that at all. It's not something I've hardly ever done though. I'd be more likely to throw it back in the coarse stage with some other rocks and then run it through the Lot-O again.
@@MichiganRocks I especially like unikite, and would enjoy seeing more of what you can do with it. I am trying to learn about and am just starting to collect rocks that are pink, green, or a combination of both.
I use a lot of unakite to make Christmas ornaments, crosses, and the bottoms of turtles I make. Sometimes I prefer just green epidote, which is the green mineral in unakite.

Galaxy stone is just what Taylor (Agate Dad) calls it. I think "amygdaloidal basalt" is a more accurate name. I found a piece of that in the eastern U.P. and slabbed it. You can see it in this video: ruclips.net/video/Sd0jEUEf2d0/видео.html

Rob, I would love to be able to buy rocks you find, polished or not. I started rock collecting just this year, but am 76 and can't go out hunting myself. You have a great eye for choosing rocks, great talent for polishing, and your videos are just wonderful.

I know, I never regret spending an extra week or two tumbling a rock, but I always regret missing a spot that could have been removed by just a little more tumbling.

Loving your videos! I'm just starting out on my rock polishing journey and can't find 500 aluminum oxide in the UK. I can get silicone carbide for the 3rd stage polishing but really like the look of the 500 aluminum oxide. Can you recommend a possible alternative to the 500 aluminum oxide for the 3rd stage? What if you tumbled halite in oil? After some thinking, I don't think it's a good idea to tumble with acetone. Acetone weakens plastics and is very flammable. Maybe you could try this at some point.
I have no interest in tumbling halite. Since you do, why don't you give it a try and let me know how it goes?
Being a rock expert, do me a favor. Take a look at the Great pyramid of Giza. I'm thinking it must be hundreds of thousands of years old.

I'm not a rock expert by any stretch of the imagination. I have never taken a geology class. I'm pretty good at tumbling rocks and I can manage to make a cabochon and a few other things. I'd trust whatever the experts say about the pyramids.

quick question as i just recently started tumbling. I have what looks like a Wishing stone (about a half in middle quartz band) and i want to pulish it without losing to much of the rock. will it do anything to the rock if i skip stage one? or any advice on keeping the rock as close as possible to where it is now but polish it?
I never skip stage one. If you only do one week in stage one, you shouldn't lose much size unless it's a really soft rock. You could test it by trying to scratch it with a knife. If the knife leaves a streak of metal on the rock, then I'd throw it in the first stage. Of course, I can't guarantee anything, so proceed at your own risk!

I have heard from a good source that the motor situation might be getting better. I'd personally still take a chance on the Lot-O. I haven't personally tried any others, so I can't really make any other recommendations.

My mom found a heavy, dark blue, turquoise-ish rock up there and we are trying to identify it! I wanted to post a pic but apparently I can't. Any suggestions?? In areas that are chipped off, it is light turquoise, but the rock itself, about the size of a roma tomato, is VERY dark blue/green.
That's not a lot to go on and I'm not great at identifying rocks, so I don't think I'm going to be much help.

I know you're kidding, Jeff, but that's the basic problem. I like some sort of contrast. When a rock is mostly monochrome, it doesn't do much for me unless it's a really interesting color. The first rock lacked color and contrast. Of course, we all have different tastes, so I'm not surprised that someone else might really like that one.

Yall talk about chirt from time to time but what is it? Because down here in Alabama, chirt is that crappy gravel (concrete/dirt, hence the name "chirt") that they put on the roads before they pave them. And yes, we have 0aved roads in Alabama 😂
Chert is a microcrystalline quartz like jasper or agate. I have tried to research the difference between chert and jasper and it's very confusing. It sort of depends on who you talk to. A friend of mine told me that if the color is kind of boring, it's called chert, but if it's a pretty color, it's called jasper. He was joking, but I don't think that's too far from the truth. Chert is one of my favorite things to find if it's a really nice banded chert.
@Michigan Rocks the chert pieces I've seen you do have been almost breath taking, I wish I could find some. I just started my tumbling journey last week (after having a tumbler, but no grit for like a year lol) so I've got plenty of time, but nice rocks are hard to come by in Alabama
