    These guys truly were our heroes. "The Wounded Gull" MR, Shaun Thompson, Gerry Lopez, Ben Aipa (those new "Stinger" shapes)... What a great time to be a surfing teen. We were in SoCal, but our heroes were across the oceans. J-Bay always looked tremendous. Pipeline. Waimea, Sunset. We lived for Surfer and Surfing magazines.

    That shared tube ride is etched in the memories of every stoner kid that grew up surfing in the 70's, myself included. It's part of our DNA.

    MR and Shaun Thompson, classic!!! These guys along with Buttons, Bertleman, Lopez, Mark Liddel and many others. Only the best. Memories. I used to dream about surfing in class and draw surfboard shapes.

      YES! All those names! Drawing waves with guys whacking the lip on my high school PeeChee folder. Lip smack, re-entry, hard bottom turn, step on the tail to stall just long enough for the barrel to grab 'em. High in the pocket, lean back with arms dropped at their side... so nonchalant, and deep in the pit. No 360's or floaters back then, just a style that was the bridge between the 60's longboarders and the 80's spastic shreddy-rippers. I remember some squirrely little 11 yr-old zinc oxide-cheeked grommet dropping in on me with his little potato chip board and going all spazzy epilectic- turns, turns, turns, poking at, and assaulting the wave like a skateboarder who put too much sugar on his Rice Krispies. I WAS local, lived 30 yards from the sand in Mission Beach and when I hollered at him for snaking me, he flips me off and squeals that his big brother was gonna pound me. I'm glad I got to experience the sport in the 70's when it was still dripping with soul. We surfed WITH the wave, not AT the wave.

    I was out at Cottons just prior to the OP Pro and took off on an outside set, thought I had it all to myself, dropped in and S.T shoulder hopped me, gyrated some speed did a very quick cutback, looked at me, smiled and I cut out. Hell, the dude just flew in from J-Bay and he was a cool dude on top of it. He paddled back out to the line-up and I was on another wave coming at him, he paddled over and said "Thanks mate". Had a short conversation with him back out in the line-up and he was a very cool dude, very real unlike some of the other Pros in the water that week. This film when it was the real deal in 16mm is awesome! ST and MR were some of the very best tube riders at the time. Love these old films but the original footage is insane. Lynch is another cool dude along with M.R

    Great surfers in the 70s. That move away from longboards started in the late 60s well underway by then. Not knocking longboarding, mix and match myself depending on conditions. I enjoy watching footage of surfers back then than any other era.

    Those Shawn OTW sessions were a seminal moment in surfing history - technically when I look at them now he was using his single fin like a thruster by that wide stance & using his rail as a third fin!

    Shaun the GOAT of Back door pipe. On a single fin. If he was on a 6'4" Quadie, he'd be doing 360's in the tube.

      Dogbeach Surfkennel . . .completely agree with you. I saw Mark Richards compete in the early Eighties. He was a great surfer and World Champion for 4 years running!
      MR cleverly used the twin-fin surfboard UNTIL the tri-fin or "Thruster" took over from 1984 and onwards.

    • @davedemaio8738
      @davedemaio8738 7 лет назад

      Hey Sloth Chuck, 90% of the action footage from "Bustin' Down the Door" , is from Free Ride made in 1977 . I still work with Bill Delaney - he's just not internet savvy and so bummed that its like the wild west on the web that he won't do anything... I've made almost 30 action sports videos. So if I sell you a VHS or DVD does that make it all right to put it on your 'Channel " and try and build your subscribers when all you did was rip off someone else's work they spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on. All that stuff from 19977 was 16mm film, not cheap to shoot , Like the Milliken Camera high speed water footage Merkel shot, and the hundreds of hours of unusable stuff that hits the cutting room floor. On top of that Bill paid for transfers to tape for editing , the soundtrack( all the artist got paid for their music) and the color grading, etc. I guess this is the age of stealing, poaching,
      rip-offs, and "catch me if you can" plain thievery. Doesn't make it right...he'd shit if he saw how shitty it looks on You Tube. This film is a great looking piece of work with deep colors and clarity. This knocked off copy shit doesn't do it justice...it the people who watch it here who are getting cheated out of seeing a great film...
