Wonderful sermon. And isn't it interesting to notice how the divine message of Christian peace is inevitably met with words of hatred and violence? But as Orthodox Christians, let us respond to our adversaries with love and kindness. Peace and love will never lead us astray. In peace let us pray to the Lord. +++

***** I'm confident it is you then. I do not expect you to remember but I believe my screen name was Alan Scott, avatar was an old white plank Church, and I think I put Wesleyan Protestant under jurisdiction.
I private messaged you thanking you for a post you made on the challenge of forgiveness. By God's grace it made an important impact to my family and I at the time.
I hope all has been well for you and yours brother! Peace be upon you always!
      In Christ,
      Scott

Really helped me understand something. I used to feel such a drastic affect from Jesus prayer that I was kind of scared by it... When I was depressed and searching God for peace and understanding I used to go to the woods and sit but the noise of insects, vividness of the sun and heat of summer even seemed to be too much for me but then I prayed Jesus prayer slowly and deeply and I noticed my surroundings to dull and I was peaceful.. But kinda part of me uneasy because of how much it worked.. Sounds weird I'm a bit of a wuss but really it showed how much God loved me to how much he will ensure our peace.
    Jesus is the way

Interesting to see Professor Tariq Ramadan (one of the most outspoken muslim thinkers of our time) listening attentively to the Eastern Orthodox theologian Kallistos Ware. I have a lot of respect for both Tariq Ramadan and Kallistos Ware. It is interesting to note that Palamas- the founder of the Hesychast movement- spent a good deal of time in the Ottoman court in Istanbul; and his use of a kind of mantra and prayer beads was probably due to the influence of the Sufis.

I've read that it's the other way around. The sufis were influenced by the Orthodox monks. The Jesus Prayer and the prayer "beads" (more like knotted cord) pre-dates Islam by a few centuries. The prayer rope was first introduced in 4th century (around the mid 300's) by St. Pachomios in the Egyptian Thebaid.

i am tending to think that St Gregory Palamas was less influenced by the Sufis as you suppose. I cant recall where, but I actually read a book that covered this topic rather well. By chance do you have any references I could look up? Thanks!

Alas as of around 2020 totally senile. May the good Lord take him soon before more heresy is spouted.
