I remember when I came in USA ,from est Europe,to go to Church,I have take a taxi,train , subway and walk it was the happiest my time I was able to make a little sacrifice for my Lord who made for me an infinit sacrifice for me the ugly sinner. Our drive time to the Cathedral was about an hour..with no traffic.. but it was a time to let my husband read prayers, etc..
Or just think..a bit like a pilgrimage each time..
But i DO understand the problems because the time/distance limits how often one can be there.

That’s awesome. I’ve always had this idea that there is a “perfect me” and the rest of me (the everyday sinful self) is just a set of imperfections that need to be cleaned away (through baptism, confession, prayer, repentance etc). It’s interesting to hear the idea that my “perfect self” doesn’t yet exist and is still being formed (by God). Taking this idea even further, since God is eternal and infinite, would we ever have a fully formed self? Wouldn’t it be an ever evolving process throughout eternity?

Considering converting. Always been non denominational Protestant leaning. Grew up in traditional Mennonite house 😅…. Not good for a rebellious soul lol. I struggle with passion and addiction like crazy. The advice and guidance I have found through some of the orthodox teachings is EXTREMELY helpful and gives me hope

My last name is Eby. Good Mennonite name. I converted back in the year 2000. Best decision I ever made. There is a way to grow as a Christian, and yet be free at the same time. The Orthodox Church has the teaching of the apostles, and the answers to spiritual struggle.

@13:08 - yeah, Bishop Kalistos was, and still is such a transformative presence... His clear and comprehensible communications are a blessing to the Orthodox Church.
Just to be clear the word is Nous, the Greek word for “Mind” not Noose (like rope) as spelled in the transcript.

Im finishing that book today, its pretty good, Orthodox Way next! Another good beginner book is Thinking Orthodox, I wish I read that book to inquire at first instead of going online for so much time and having to sift through orthodox and non orthodox sources

I am a bit surprised listening that this dear brother in Christ had studied within a Christian concept of schooling for a while and still didn't know about the spirit, the Nous. It is not the soul (which is emotions, passions), it is the Spirit.🕊️It does confirm that God is never found by the mind (which is intellect, thoughts) only. The soul is not the Nous. All our works are like filthy rags to God, but by working to follow the example of Jesus as set by God we are helped by the reborn Spirit (Nous) for our own sake. We are sanctified by God and led by Him. It is out of His mercy that He enables us by His Spirit to then be able to renew our soul, mind and body. The spirit, the nous is eternal which is the only aspect of us that can totally be reborn anew by the mercy and love of God and it is done so by God Himself. A new heart is another way of saying 'a new spirit'. In scripture heart is refering to the Spirit of God. The eternal Spirit of God absolutely remains untouched by the soul, mind or body but it is the means of mercy and love of God to guide us in renewal of the soul, mind and body according to God's perfect will. Because these latter things are tainted and influenced by the world in which we live. We have to renew these aspects not for God (ours are filthy rags, but God loves us so:), but He does it for us out of His mercy and Love thus we can never boast for example. It is utter humility. This is where we actively listen to the Holy Spirit and work with the Spirit of God in us to renew our mind (intellect, thoughts), soul (emotions, passions) and body. It is what makes us the children of God, and oh God is so beautiful! The path to an individual kind of holiness, 'that clean white robe' is the path of following and obeying of His Spirit, in our heart. Living by the heart is living by the Spirit of our Lord God. Everything within and by His living word which is given us, which is also in the center of us when we receive the new birth in Christ.🤍

Brethren in Christ (sisters reading as well), salutations this fine spring Friday evening. I've been reading that (as well as others within the same burgundy book) prayer quite often in my travels recently, figure it would be only fair to share it for an actual orthodox priest (the prayer, respectfully, is given by churches I pass by on foot). Now, I go on to listen again to the Prophet, President Nelson's nose recent talk. Before I go, though, it's worth asking. Has Brother Lewis been officially canonized by the Anglicans, Catholics, or any regional holy orthodoxy yet? 🙏🏻
How was the first Christian to speak about the nous in the same way that modern orthodox do?
First Christians did not speak of many things that later theologians discourse on. They did not need to. Just like we do not talk about air until we begin to suffocate. Saint Matrona of Moscow, a blind illiterate peasant woman, was like a first Christian - she did not discuss fine points of theological theory - she just loved God, the Holy Virgin, saints, prayed to them and talked to them like to her friends or relatives. She also suffered enormously for Orthodox faith. And in answer to her prayers God worked great miracles.

Yes! When one has a pure heart! And lives with faith through Grace without analysing everything with the mind. That’s how St Paul walked on water until….
Perhaps the tools of holiness and sanctification are closer to what you’re talking about…but the tools of salvation are believing with your heart and confessing with your mouth that Christ is lord.
Hebrews 12:14 teaches that “without holiness (sanctification), no one will see the Lord.” From an Orthodox and fully NT perspective these aspects of our salvation in Christ are never divorced from one another as in modern thought. Can you imagine being “saved”, but unable to perceive the Lord? How does that work? Unless our personal “salvation” is effectively also our transformation from glory to glory in union with Christ and His death and resurrection, it seems hard to me to think of it as personal salvation in any truly meaningful sense. This does not mean Orthodox believe the working out of our salvation in Christ or our cooperation with God earns our salvation or obligates God. Our salvation in all senses is the freely bestowed gift of God. He just doesn’t force it on anyone.
Be ware of unholy Ecumenism, syncretism.
I hope nothing I say comes off offensive, but I'd love someone who is Orthodox to respond to some of my questions. I've been an Evangelical Christian (attending Calvary Chapel type churches) all my life. I've recently become very unhappy with the lack of reverence for God when I go to church. Worship has become entertainment rather than true worship that glorifies God. I want something deeper, but there are aspects of Orthodoxy which seem to me like idol worship (please correct me if this is wrong). It seems to me that there's a heavy emphasis on the saints, almost to the point where they're on the same level as Christ. I have a real problem with churches treating ordinary men as if they're worthy of such awe. Only Jesus is worthy of our praise, the example He gave is MORE THAN enough. We are all sinners, all in need of our Savior and I feel only Jesus deserves our complete adoration. So while I feel called to certain aspects of Orthodoxy, some aspects concern me. Again, I hope this doesn't offend, but I'd love some feedback.
I have left Calvary Chapel for Orthodoxy, I was first hit with how reverent they are towards God, I love how they pray in the trinity every time, I love the tools of the church, it’s like my mind has been opened
Definitely come to liturgy, talk to a priest, one day I realized it wasn’t in contrast to the faith left to us. I had a hard time with the saints and how they treat them, not anymore. Talk to a priest, become catechized, all your questions will be answered
There are some good interviews where the Fathers featured on this channel talk about idol worship v. veneration. In the Orthodoxy Church, icons are venerated - not worshipped. When it comes to the veneration of the Saints, they are venerated because they, as ordinary humans, were able to to achieve deep reverence of Christ and were able to behave in a Christ-like manner. Note that they are venerated, not worshipped. Nor are they seen as equals to Christ, they are seen as notable humans (with flaws and had sins) who managed to achieve a level of communion with God that should be aspired to. Hope this helps, and I hope that anyone else can correct me if I am wrong.
@@thomascrocker1264 Thank you for that explanation. It does help me understand a bit better. I suppose that having such a clear hierarchy in a church repels me a bit because it's so easy for one's ego to become puffed up. The churches I have attended don't even like to claim the title of "head pastor" because Jesus should be the head. I also feel turned off by the idea that there's a need for someone (a priest) in between God and I. I feel completely right praying directly to the Father myself, with no middleman. Don't get the wrong idea, I do value wisdom from godly people, but I really dislike the idea of treating a person as "holy" if that makes sense.
@@hannahbaker3080 I think one thing that upsets me is such a clear hierarchy. To me, I love churches where they don't even claim a "head pastor" because that title is reserved for Jesus alone. I don't know how I'd feel about a middleman between God and I. Other than giving the sermon on Sunday, what other roles does the priest serve? Do you have to confess to them? What exactly is the structure?

Now that I know why you are this kind of “new” Orthodox, and NOT the authentic Orthodox. It is because, as you yourself stated it in this clip, you wanted to learn about history and see where you fit.
However, the REAL and GENUINE Orthodox of old was, FIRST OF ALL and BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE ALL ABOUT GOD. God planned the plan of salvation, He worked it out, He offered it to us, and He put the eternity into our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11) drawing us to HIMSELF - NOT to any of the tens of thousands of denominations and religions in the world.
Now then, to make it clear, whosoever listens to that let’s call it emitter set into his heart by God, and submits to the voice of the Holly Spirit that whispers, will become A CHILD OF GOD, “born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:13), born of the very SAME God that Jesus was born of (Hebrews 2:11), by repentance, believing in the Gospel and baptized AFTER believing (Mark 16:16).
But whosoever looks around with his/her own eyes as a sinner born in sin and iniquities (Psalm 51:5), will become one of tens of thousands of religions and denominations in the world, including the Orthodox one.
At that time the word “Orthodox” it was not an official word. This word, Orthodox, entered in its use around year 500 (see Fr. John Anthony McGuckin, Handbook to Patristic Theology, 2004).
One more thing, the Orthodoxy took its departure from its origin at no more, and no less than 180 degrees. And it is so because people looked with their sinful eyes where do they fit, in other words which denomination it will accommodate better their fleshly desires.

@@Adam_Wilde I am a priest after the order of Melchizedek, made priest by Jesus for His Father (Revelation 5:9-10). And like my Great Priest, I do NOTHING of myself as He says in John 5:19, NOTHING that comes from ANYBODY on Earth, but ONLY what the Father from Heaven tells me in His Holy Words.
Now, I don’t say that I am perfect, but I talk about the way that I live. And the church that I attend it is the same, like it is specified in the Bible.

The Catholic called in the orthodox called her, both not biblical. I don’t know of any dog by theirs. We’re not three person even though we have a body so in the spirit so there’s one God names. Jesus Jesus said in the Bible says if you have the son you have the father also if you have not the son, not the father Jesus, the word that I speak I speak out of myself, but the father dwell in me, do it the word the God was in Christ, the body, the flesh the word made flesh the word. God made the word the world through his word through Jesus through the word the word was made flesh and it is beautiful. There’s no three persons like the three amigos, you know what I mean
