Love this guy! One of my boys wanted to learn to sew, then another, and now my husband is jumping onboard! It’s really hard to find someone that breaks it all down and isn’t going to only teach about making woman’s or little girls clothing. This channel rocks! I hope there will be more uploads.
Did you know you can get a manual rotary blade sharpener? It's a little plastic ring with sandpaper embedded on either side. A quick twirl of your blade and you're sharp again. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Has saved me a TON of money on blades.
Well well well.. look who it is... Looks like we have actual professionals in here watching my little "Tock Custom" beginner's level tutorials lol. Love you Becky. Thx for the tip on rotary sharpeners too!
Just got a sewing machine for Christmas, can't wait to get started! Your videos/tutorials are perfect! I'm a Sheetmetal Worker of 40yrs getting ready to retire. Thank you!

It does not look that hard at all, I just need time and practice. Thank you so so so so much!! I’m going to get all the things you mention in this video, and will keep following you to learn more about this! Thank you!!!
I truly appreciate everything you said in this comment. I'm so happy to not only help you with the knowledge you're looking for, but also to inspire you to create the things that you want! You are so welcome, please let me know if you have any questions along the way! Stay safe, and have some fun crafting! :)

GREAT VIDEOS! I live in Pennsylvania. I'm in my mid 60s. One day, a cab driver I met told me he grew up in Chester, PA. This city is probably the most economically distressed city in the state. He told me that all students, including boys, had to learn how to use a sewing machine. There were no options. All students had to learn this basic task. This should be mandatory in all schools.
The most important safety tip for using rotary cutters is to make sure to always have a sharp blade. Replace it more often than you think you'd should. A sharp blade goes through fabric like a hot knife through butter. As the blade dulls, you put more and more pressure on it and that's when slips happen. A dull blade is more dangerous than a sharp one.
I'm really happy you enjoyed this video! This was one of my personal favorite tutorials to make, hope you're getting setup to make some great new projects :)

Loving this video! Very informative. Thanks! Now I understand a LOT of my grandmother's sewing supplies I've inherited. Still figuring out, Betsy Ross, my Brother SE425 sewing machine. Finally, figured out how to set the sewing needle to the middle and stay there. Now. I'm not swearing at the sewing machine quite as much. That 'Telephone' looking thingy looks like a Must Have! That'll save my fingers, arms and what all from being severed! Thanks for showing that device. From your videos, I'm getting braver. Some things I've added to the collection are, snaps, different sizes, and a Bad Ass tool to POUND, (I mean, set the snaps) in place. My sewing kit's always looks more like a toolbox than a sewing box! Also, I use soup cans, a rock or a brick to keeping the material from moving around. And Sally Hansen clear nail polish to keep the fabric from fraying, (It's a girl thing)! Just tap the tip of the nail polish applicator on a paper towel, then apply to the ends of the fabric and the polish won't make a mess. Works like a charm and is wicked cheap!

I'll be honest: the last time I touched a sewing machine, I was in junior high school (Bernina) sewing machine. Basics and some new stuff are there, but I prefer something other than the plastic bobbins. I've picked up most essentials and watched to see if I needed to include anything; I am glad to say I got the basics, but I added the rotary cutters. I bought some fabric shears just like the pair my sister has and recommended. I don't plan on doing anything fancy, just basic stuff. I appreciate all your knowledge. When did the bobbins change? How can I switch back to metal? By the way, I watched your video on seams. That was great! Thank you for sharing. I've watched many videos, and yours are the best basic steps for newbies and oldies just getting back into sewing. Thank you.
I was on the fence if fabric craft was something I could even try, but your videos inspired me so much and gave me what I needed to know to get started. Can't wait to see your other tutorials and start making some projects!
Very happy to hear it Robyn! I would obviously encourage you to get started... but that's just because I love sewing so much lol. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out along the way. Hope you end up having some fun learning and making some cool projects
I am new to sewing and absolutely love your videos and the detail information you give. As a beginner my biggest struggle is measuring and cutting fabric. I struggle with cutting fabric for projects when I have a yard or two and a smaller cutting mat using a rotary cutter and acrylic ruler. I would love to see you do something on the basics and techniques for cutting fabric down and getting precise even cuts.
Thank you so much for enjoying these videos :) Honestly, all I can offer you as advise is just... lots of lots of practice. If you have the passion to get better, you'll become faster, more precise, and more polished as you continue to create. I was terrible at sewing when I was new, but I enjoyed it so much, I just kept doing it, and all my projects got better and better over time. Enjoy watching your skill evolve as you continue to create, and take lots of photos of your work so you can see how far you've come!
Wow this is extremely helpful, I’m so thankful I found your channel😀Thank you so much. One day I want to own my own boutique with custom made clothing and when asked where I’ve learned to sew, I’ll definitely be proud to say, you have helped through your direct and easy tutorials. I can start dusting off my sewing machine 😀
Awwww, I love that idea! I had the same thought when I was new too, and my business model has shifted a few times over the years. Pretty fun to see what can happen when you start making really cool projects. Keep me updated as you learn new things and grow in your craft!
Great timing as I received a sewing machine for Xmas to re upholster my classic car interior but need to learn the basics first and this the stuff I need to know. Thanks from the UK and keep up the great work.
Great vid, Tock! A side note, Keep in mind that your cutting mat is like any other tool. It is not a coaster, and it is not made for hot tools. Take care of it and it will last much longer
Yeah I pretty much ruined my old mat by ironing on it, using it as a painting cleanup mat, heat forming foam, etc... I guess I just wanted to keep this video shorter and left some of those details out lol. Hope you're doing amazing! Love to Dapper plz
You are so welcome, and I really appreciate your positive feedback! We live in a busy world, people need info fast so they can get to work :) Have a wonderful 2020!
I found your channel and I fell in love with it. I am beginning to learn how to sew (on my own) and I will be watching all of your videos! Congratulations! Greetings from Mexico City, Mexico
Great videos!!! I need to make window covers for my van. I need to cover reflective insulation with material and a border. You have answered so many questions! Thank you for the informative videos.
Thank you so much Tock for your really clear tuitions videos. I have on impulse just bought a Brother L14S to begin on which arrives on Monday. Hope that was a good choice. Your videos are going to be an immense help to me as I start on my new venture.
Love this as I'm a begin again when it comes to sewing as I kid i did sewing projects with my grandma but now many years later I'm starting over n I'm just getting my basic stuff together now that my kids r old enough to give me a little me time lol this was a great video n ty the only thing u left out in basic tools is pins needles n a pin cushion or clips i made my first two things yesterday on my new machine a mask obviously hahaha n a baby knot hat for my daughter's doll I'm so proud of myself lol
Thank you so much for the comment! Glad you're getting back into sewing :) Omg, I know... I felt so foolish that I forgot to mention pins lol, it's literally the only other thing I should have included. Anyway, thanks for watching - hope you're doing terrific!
Another well done and well presented video! I have been sewing for years and you have covered the basics very thoroughly. Recently found your channel and watched them all. I look forward to watching your future videos and learning more from you. Thanks!
I just got into sewing like a month ago. This video’s pretty good, but it’s kind of mind blowing coming from an armor / prop making perspective. A lot of tools for sewing can double for tools of armor. Especially the seam allowance ruler, 123 blocks and the chalk wheel. Those are useful for foam crafting too.
I like the tools you mentioned here and I have to go shopping for the supplies I will need to begin sewing and sure do appreciate you showing us the information we need. It really affects me since I am a beginner and hope to be doing some nice work after gaining so much knowledge here on RUclips.
Love your videos! Thank you. I am a complete rookie to sewing and literally just bought my first machine two days ago to make face masks. Your tips are super helpful and easy to understand.... btw- good taste too! Ii bought the exact same fabrics as the one u show in this video. Lol
Here comes the Novel.... Sorry!! Hey Tock! I'm really loving your channel & all the video's!! They are very informative!! And I really like your down to earth personality (I’m the same way but wishing others were that way also…LOL), It’s also very refreshing to see a regular guy into sewing!! I recently got back into sewing It’s been over 10 years since I touched a sewing machine; I did have one but it was sold many years ago it was when they first came out with the embroidery features on a sewing machine, it was by an off brand (not singer, not brother, etc) it had so many buttons and switches and I found it highly confusing and frustrating & eventually lost interest in sewing. Sold it in a yard sale years ago for $40 bucks. Since my new beginnings with sewing again, I needed to find a sewing machine. I wanted light & portable, easy bells & whistles (lol…. but then again I didn’t want one of those sewing machines that are so small & very light & hardly weigh anything at all….. and if you happen to blow out a candle from across the table it won’t go flying about!! ). I’m sorry I’m in a very silly mood this wee morning… I’ve been watching tons of sewing machine comparison videos, tutorials, etc,… etc….Since my search began about a month ago I also want sewing and embroidery function on one machine but I also don’t want to give up me right leg, me right arm & an eye for it all either if you know what I mean!! LMAO~ Our daughter does a lot of free hand drawings from cartoon characters to Disney to Dragons, Dinosaurs, Bird of Phoenix, characters similar to sailor moon but aren’t. She adds characters to game console games, characters (she loves Zelda) comes up with a totally new character, about them, gaming info, a story, writes stories as well and gives them outfits, weapons, special powers, etc. She has a lot of these drawn on paper I would like to get them maybe on t-shirts in embroidery, prints, on T-shirts & etc what kind of sewing/embroidery machine would you recommend? I also plan to get a circuit machine as well. She has also created Tattoos for friends to their specifications of course they never paid her and 40 bucks for a one of a kind pretty rude at the time to do to an 18 year old. She’s now 32. Sorry I love to talk I hope I didn’t talk your ears or eyes off.. Wanting her drawings to be downloaded on to computer then so it could download to the sewing/embroidery machine her drawings??? Erika and I want to print her creations on T-shirts and tank tops, or maybe sell her designs and ideas to other game companies or movies, etc. Which machine is better Brother Pe770 or the Brother Pe800?? Possibly get a circuit machine as well….Can you think of any machines that might help print her t-shirts at home? Tia! Sorry for talking your ear off!! Or any duplication I’m tired been a very long day!!!Have a great Friday!!
Sounds like you have a ton of creative projects you're excited about getting into! I absolutely recommend the Brother PE-770/800 for a very high quality and fairly low cost embroidery machine. I got the Brother Scan n Cut for my vinyl cutter, I also have a cricut maker, and I honestly prefer the Brother cutter to be honest, but they're both good machines. I use PE-Design 10 to digitize my designs into embroidery files - is expensive software, but if you're going to monetize your projects, it'll pay for itself in no time. I do have videos for the basics on embroidery, patch making, digitizing graphics, and all of that, so check them out and let me know what you think. Thanks for taking the time to send such a thoughtful message! Hope you have a terrific week!
@@TockCustom honestly at this point just the basics, I got into cosplay last year around this time and have been building a Mandalorian costume since, there are several things requiring a sewing machine and when I got my hands on one I knew I needed some guidance. Your channel was the second one I watched and you seemed much more down to earth then the first video I watched so I opted to watch some more. Now I've binge watched a lot lol.
@@NorMandalArms Making a Mando is a great reason to get into sewing. I do all my EVA foam and other cosplay tutorials on TNT Cosplay Supply's RUclips btw. Good luck on your builds!
Very helpful video! I started sewing last summer. I have self healing mats and use rotary cutters on them but my mats get scored each time. Am I just pushing way too hard with real sharp blades? Mine certainly don’t self heal haha. I have Fiskars mats.
Video request: I want to add zipper pockets to a fleece jacket - chest pockets, upper arm pockets, wrist pockets. Also maybe add inside pockets. I would love to see a video on how to do these kinds of modifications to an already built jacket. Do I have to disassemble the sleeves to add pockets to them or can they be modified on the machine while still "tubes"? Thanks, you're awesome!
Great ideas here. The inside and outside zipper pocket thing is totally something I could teach. the sleeves thing would be quite a a bit of extra work, but a more advanced tutorial. I'll put these on my list and see what I can do for you. Good recommendations for sure!
Thanks for watching! You know what - that would be a terrific video for taking measurements for men and women. I'm going to add that to my list for sure. I'm certain you'll be able to find other videos on that, but I'd like to do it my way as well :) Thanks for the recommendation!
Thanx again Tock!!! Plain & Simple explaining. But I bought the wrong machine. Thanks to Ccovid 19, Amazon held up my order for the Brother Cs6000i so they could increase the price by 400. Anyway I ended up with a Singer Confidence😫
Oh ouch! Better to have something than nothing at all, but I'd replace that machine as soon as possible when you can lol Hope you still enjoy making some cool things along the way. Let me know if you need anything else as you're learning

@@robynwetherbee3982 I'm on Instagram and Twitter... shouldn't be too hard to find 😊
Thank you so much for enjoying these videos :)
Honestly, all I can offer you as advise is just... lots of lots of practice.
Thank you so much for your presentations. Very thorough and enjoyable.
You're very welcome, thank you so much for watching and the positive comment. Have a great week!
I am brand new to sewing and this tutorial helped a ton! I just received my brother se600 tonight and I’m so excited to start my new projects!
Oh you're gonna be off to a great start! I'm so excited for all the amazing things you're going to be able to make!
What a great Video. I am so ready to learn from the sewing Jedi master! Your the best Tock! Thank you sir!
Lol, you're too kind my friend! Thanks for watching, hope to see you make some cool stuff this year! 🤗
Great video for newbs like me! Thanks!
Happy to help! I made this just for you!
Glad this video made it to you at the right time. Re-upholstery jobs are really fun! Hope you enjoy the project, cheers and Happy New Year!
THIS WAS SO INFORMATIVE THANK U BRO
Glad it was helpful! Thanks a ton for watching :)
Great, easy to understand instruction! Thanks! Just getting started with sewing and I will definitely be watching your videos, probably over and over.
I appreciate the comment Bob, hope you end up getting into some great new projects! Always have more videos coming out, thanks for your support!
I'm about to use the hell out of these videos to learn to sew my own gear for camping/backpacking. Maybe even some rain gear too. Thanks!
That sounds awesome, thanks for watching! Let me know if you have questions along the way :)
your videos are so clear and organized! thank you for getting straight to the point! SUPER HELPFUL!!!🙏🏼

You inspire me to jazz up my sewing machine!!
I 1000% support this idea :D
Glad you're getting back into sewing :)
Omg, I know...
Thanks!

This comment would take way too long to answer lol, but I'm happy you found me now!!
I'm sure all you guys like this video because you guys can make good videos for you guys. Go, you guys, go!
Just when i was thinking "what tools do i need to get started with" !
Perfect timing! I forgot to mention, you'll need sewing pins... that was an important thing I missed. Thanks for the comment!
Your videos are so imformative & worth the time. Thank you!
Hi, did you ever make a tutorial on making a pair of trousers?
I will be doing a video on that before Christmas! That's going to be a great video :)
Glad I found your videos, there so simple but really detailed!
Thanks so much for watching! Super fun to help the newer sewing folks out there :)
Another great video! Thank you! You teach very well and make sure to go through everything in a way it's easily understood
Thank you very much, I do my best to cover the important details without all the extra nonsense. Thanks for watching, Happy New Year!

Here comes the Novel.... Sorry!!
Hey Tock! I'm really loving your channel & all the video's!!
They are very informative!! And I really like your down to earth personality (I’m
the same way but wishing others were that way also…LOL), It’s also very
refreshing to see a regular guy into sewing!! I recently got back into sewing
It’s been over 10 years since I touched a sewing machine; I did have one but it
was sold many years ago it was when they first came out with the embroidery
features on a sewing machine, it was by an off brand (not singer, not brother,
etc) it had so many buttons and switches and I found it highly confusing and
frustrating & eventually lost interest in sewing. Sold it in a yard sale
years ago for $40 bucks.
Since my new beginnings with sewing again, I needed to
find a sewing machine. I wanted light & portable, easy bells & whistles
(lol…. but then again I didn’t want one of those sewing machines that are so
small & very light & hardly weigh anything at all….. and if you happen
to blow out a candle from across the table it won’t go flying about!! ). I’m
sorry I’m in a very silly mood this wee morning…
I’ve been watching tons of sewing machine comparison videos,
tutorials, etc,… etc….Since my search began about a month ago I also want
sewing and embroidery function on one machine but I also don’t want to give up
me right leg, me right arm & an eye for it all either if you know what I
mean!! LMAO~
Our daughter does a lot of free hand drawings from
cartoon characters to Disney to Dragons, Dinosaurs, Bird of Phoenix, characters
similar to sailor moon but aren’t. She adds characters to game console games,
characters (she loves Zelda) comes up with a totally new character, about them,
gaming info, a story, writes stories as well and gives them outfits, weapons,
special powers, etc. She has a lot of these drawn on paper I would like to get
them maybe on t-shirts in embroidery, prints, on T-shirts & etc what kind
of sewing/embroidery machine would you recommend? I also plan to get a circuit machine
as well. She has also created Tattoos for friends to their specifications of
course they never paid her and 40 bucks for a one of a kind pretty rude at the
time to do to an 18 year old. She’s now 32. Sorry I love to talk I hope I didn’t
talk your ears or eyes off.. Wanting her drawings to be downloaded on to
computer then so it could download to the sewing/embroidery machine her drawings???
Erika and I want to print her creations on T-shirts and tank tops, or maybe
sell her designs and ideas to other game companies or movies, etc. Which
machine is better Brother Pe770 or the Brother Pe800?? Possibly get a circuit
machine as well….Can you think of any machines that might help print her
t-shirts at home? Tia! Sorry for talking your ear off!! Or any duplication I’m
tired been a very long day!!!Have a great Friday!!
You always know what content to upload... Thank you so much for this
That's a wonderful compliment! Just thinking of videos I wish existed when I was new 😆
@@TockCustom Awww so sad you didn't get them but thanks for availing them to us... Especially me who is new to sewing

Love these tutorials. Found your channel today and I am thankful I did
So happy you found my channel, I really appreciate the positive feedback. Let me know if there's anything you'd like to learn!

@@NorMandalArms Thanks a ton! Still growing that channel, so that means a lot :) Happy crafting!
Very helpful video! I started sewing last summer. I have self healing mats and use rotary cutters on them but my mats get scored each time. Am I just pushing way too hard with real sharp blades? Mine certainly don’t self heal haha. I have Fiskars mats.
Great delivery and info man... outstanding really
Love your choice for jeans! : )
Thank you! 😊 I love making wild clothes!
I appreciate the list of basics.
Of course! We all start somewhere :)

I really love your videos. They help me a lot. Thank you thank you ☺️ thank you
Thank you so much for watching, I seriously love helping people learn! Sewing is too much fun not to share with people :)
This is so cool. Would you recommend getting the tracing paper for beginners? I saw you mention it in the pattern video. Thank you!
Great video. Maybe I missed it but does anyone use 'pinking shears' anymore? If so, in what scenario's/applications would you use them? Thanks!
I’m happy I found your channel thank you
Very happy you found me too! Let me know if you need help with anything as you're getting started :)
Thank you for sharing your video. I've learned a lot. Would you mind telling me what size are your cutting mats?
My current cutting mat is 36x48 which is pretty large. My first one was 24x36 and I used it for about 5 years before upgrading

Cheers! Thanks a lot!
@@TockCustom Thanks so much!!!

Thanx again Tock!!! Plain & Simple explaining. But I bought the wrong machine. Thanks to Ccovid 19, Amazon held up my order for the Brother Cs6000i so they could increase the price by 400. Anyway I ended up with a Singer Confidence😫
Oh ouch! Better to have something than nothing at all, but I'd replace that machine as soon as possible when you can lol
Hope you still enjoy making some cool things along the way. Let me know if you need anything else as you're learning
