  • From our 6th Season of Paramount Television’s 80s hit series, “SOLID GOLD”, enjoy this duet that I (Michael Miller - “Mickle“) arranged and produced for our host, Dionne Warwick, and her cohost, David Foster.
David and I first met when I was 21 and had just won a Warner Bros/Columbia Pictures national songwriting contest that was held in conjunction with their movie, "Ode to Billy Joe" (starring Robby Benson). While I was looking for a studio to record my winning song, I went to United Western Studios in Hollywood (now East-West) and heard the most incredible sound ringing through the walls of Studio 2. Upon knocking on the studio door, I was greeted by 26 yr. old David Foster who was producing Sonny Bono at the time.
David gave me a great deal of wonderful advice for me upcoming Warner Bros. recording session, and David and I continued to stay in touch over the ensuing years. When David was asked to be on SOLID GOLD 8 years later, I did this duet arrangement for David and Dionne Warwick. Normally, I would have the artists come to my recording sessions to make sure they would be happy with the arrangement and production of their backing tracks, but David told me that he didn't need to come because had been listening to my arrangements and productions for years on SOLID GOLD and knew that whatever I did would be terrific. Such high praise from mega-producer David Foster was definitely one of the major highlights from my years as musical director and theme composer of SOLID GOLD!
The members of my SOLID GOLD band are:
    Michael Miller - synthesizer
    Rocky Davis - keyboards
    Stewart Levin - keyboards
    George Doering - guitar
    John Goux - guitar
    Michael Fischer - percussion
    David Edelstein - bass
    Mike Baird - drums
    Background singers:
    Dionne Warwick
    Dee Dee Warwick
    Jon Joyce
    Joe Pizzulo
    Kipp Lennon
    Deborah Davis
    Sunny Wilkinson
    Beth Anderson
    Gail Lopata
    Mitzi McCall
    Myrna Matthews

David foster will go down in history as one of the greatest songwriters of our era. His string of hits for other artists is so well deserved. Melodies that are so timeless and beautiful you can sing them without any music behind them. He's one of my heroes.

Dionne should work with whoever owns the rights to Solid Gold, and release a DVD of her collaborative performances with the various artists who appeared on the show with her.

This was an exquisite example of the enduring popularity of David Foster and his music with Dionne Warwick singing three of the hits. Dionne doing a part of "Hard To Say I'm Sorry," a Chicago song, from their David Foster era, was wonderful.
David Foster has contributed so much to the music world and seems to have set the standard, no matter who records his music.
The Jason Scheff era in Chicago began with collaboration that helped Jason gain an audience after Peter Cetera had left the band. That helped, in my opinion, to propel Jason to 31 years with Chicago as lead vocalist, from 1985 to 2016.
It is nice to know that David Foster is still making beautiful music with his wife Katharine McPhee, from "American Idol."
It is nice to note as well that Jason Scheff and Dionne Warwick recently recorded a version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" on the new Dionne Warwick Christmas album, which helped her make her Grand Ole Opry debut in December 2019.
I have been and continue to be a fan of all those mentioned and "Solid Gold," of course.
Thank you for this hard-to-find "Solid Gold" appearance.

I had inadvertently omitted something from my original comment. David Foster composed the phenomenally successful theme to the 1985 theatrical release "St. Elmo's Fire" and that had lyrics that were sung by Dionne Warwick in a 1985 episode of "Solid Gold." Since the instrumental version got more radio airplay at the time, not many had realized that a lyrical version existed. I wonder if you had produced the lyrical version for "Solid Gold" and Dionne Warwick. That was how I had found out that a lyrical version existed for the song "For Just A Moment," and that was many years later on RUclips. Thank you for that.

@@bigeyezzzzzzz I found a video on RUclips with Dionne Warwick in a white dress singing the "For Just A Moment" theme from the movie "St. Elmo's Fire." It had originally been a duet with a male and female singer. However, Dionne carried both parts of the song. It appears that it was from the fall of 1985. There was a special effect used on the production on the show, with Dionne appearing twice at times in kind of a split screen effect. I have seen that type of effect used before in television, where the singer appears twice on the same screen, but from different camera angles. I will try to share the video here or on Instagram. It said David Foster and "St. Elmo's Fire" right on the television screen.

I could not find a way to place the link here, but did on Instagram. I hope that helps give me some answers about that wonderful arrangement.
