Don't be hard on yourself Robb. You didn't fail your son. You just lost an opportunity to explain what Down Syndrome really is to another kid. That's it. No big deal. You are a great father and a great man. All the best from an Italian father who admires you.

I'm a father of two boys. Just can't hold my tears while I'm watching ur video. You are a great father, and your son is definitely a lucky boy. Sorry I'm not very familiar with down syndrome. There might be a lot of things that your son can not do, like being a doctor or a lawyer. But one thing for sure, with a father like you, your son will be one of the happiest boys ever. Thanks for sharing this video, very good lesson for every father. bless u .

Hey, as a dad of a child with Ds I just want to say thank you,
You put into words something I haven't been able too and truer words are never spoken.
You've got to remember without teaching people to see the world differently it will never change.
I hope the person who you didn't react to sees this and learns something what he can teach to another

A friend of the family had a daughter with downs, and I had some friends that worked with them for special olympics. I guess I only ever saw the kindness and happiness. It makes complete sense though that they would run the full spectrum of emotions just like anyone else. That was just my experience.

This video has just crossed my Facebook and I felt the need to let you know I don't think you failed your son. People can learn a thing or two from your video! It is inspiring that people can be so heartfelt. I grew up with a girl like your son and when everyone else put her to the wayside I was at her house daily playing having fun and being a friend. I commend you for your video. You should be very proud!

After some searching I found your channel so I could deliver this message to you because I wanted you to know you just made a difference in my life. I want to say thank you so much! I feel bad my original emotion isn't behind this message because I had to track you down but hopefully it reaches you. People don't ask the right questions and they come to conclusions because of bad information. I was severely abused as a child and it caused me to have numerous "disabilities". All anyone could see was what was wrong with me. They didn't take the time to love what was right with me. I've only had one person ever express to me that they see what's right with me. I really want to say thank you for reminding me to stop looking at my disabilities as a problem and find the gift in it because it is there and I believe that. You remind me that there are good people out there who can choose to see things for what they are vs. what they aren't. God bless you and your son!! Much love Robb!

Hi Robb your video randomly came up on my Facebook for some reason and I wanted to say how much I sympathise and relate to it. It brought me to tears as in the past I too have been in the situation you have and the feeling of failure you feel in that moment is unbearable. My daughter is 6 and is just amazing! She has taught me so much and brought so much love and happiness to our household.
I've watched some of the videos of you and your son and he is a credit to you. The way the two of you interact is truly beautiful to watch and I genuinely wish you and your family all the happiness in the world.
From one proud father to another I thank you for making this video.

Hi, thank you so much for this video. It is all so true that your son is the teacher. We spent our life's trying to be and learn what someone else tells us. If we would spent that same amount of time on learning who we are, the world would be like heaven. Your son does everything out of himself, giving you a hug just because right at that moment he feels he loves you. You are a lucky father.

Thank you so much for making this video. I have a sister that is mentally and physically handicapped and also has epilepsy. When I tell people this the most common reaction is 'Oh that is so sad' or 'That must be really hard for you'. I always get so pissed of and sad at the same time when someone says this to me. She is the most beautiful person in the word and she is the only one who can give me true happiness. I look up to her in so many ways, she might be like a child and will never be able to count to ten and understand certain things in the world, but I honestly think that I don't know anyone who is as happy as she is. Her laugh and hugs are so sincere and I she learns me so much.
I can see in your eyes that you have so much love for your son and that is the most important thing!

You can't change everyone's "unknowledge" (to say it kind of nice) , but you did a good step with 25 K likes on your video that was shared on Facebook.

I have ADHD and have a struggle when it comes to live in a world with people, who has no understanding of the beauty in difference. I believe that we are all here to learn and teach each other, that everyone is good at something. so when i see you here, speaking up like this. it lightens my heart, it gives me hope for that one day, people open there eyes and see how every single one of us, is as important as the one standing next to us. thank you!

I would love for this msg to get to this wonderful father who recorded this video. I carry the "negative " factor in my blood because I am A-. When I was pregnant for the first time they told me the risks my unborn child could have if I don't get the vaccine during my pregnancy...one of the highest risk was Down syndrome. Of course I opted to get the vaccine because I was exposing my baby to many other risks, BUT I always say, if God blesses me with a child with Down Syndrome, I will love him/her because to me they are the most beautiful people I've ever met, so kind, loving, fun, in general just BEAUTIFUL ❤️. I love this video, and no, you did not let your son down...the other parent let his kid down by giving a very wrong answer.

I just returned to rewatch this video after seeing it all those years ago when it was first posted. It had quite an effect on me at the time. My daughter (who has DS) was only 3 then - she's 11 now. Some other parents and I went on to start a charity (called Wouldn't Change a Thing) in the UK who have worked to try and eliminate negative outdated perceptions of people with DS. What you managed to articulate here (in the moment!) was profound. I am just reflecting now at the irony - had that moment in the video store not happened (which you considered at the time to be a failure) then this video would not have happened. This message would not have reached the people that it has, nor created the ripple effects like my own. It's not a failure - it's a triumph.

Think now how many parents may be asked similar questions by their children, and how many of them will remember your words.
you HAVE NOT failed your son. you have empowered him, and many others as blessed as he is. There are times when all of us wish we had said something in a particular moment, but in reality, that moment may not have gone the way you imagined. To have corrected that guy in front of his sons may have embarrassed him and lead to more misinformation. you didn't do that. instead you demonstrated the true goodness of social media and instead used that emotion to educate a far greater number of people. You are doing the right thing, and you're a lucky guy to have a son who makes you the man you are.

You clearly love and cherish your son, this is clear from your emotions that shines through on this video. In NO way have you failed your son. I was brought up knowing that everyone is an equal. Down syndrome is not an illness, it is not a disability, it does not define who you are. Who you are is defined by your personality and how you want the world to see you. I myself have never had the honour of meeting someone with downs syndrome, but if I did I would see them as nothing more than the person they let the world know them as. Anyone who see's others as less than equal as themsevles are the ones with an illness. They are the ones with the ignorance to think they are better than anyone else. I applaud you for getting you word out there, and educating others. It's people like you that the world needs, to show people not to be scared of what they don't understand.

Rob, don't be to hard on yourself. I'm a dad too and we make mistakes. You did the right thing to post this video and reached so much more people than telling this other guy what down syndrome is. I'm really touched. Your son can be proud of you and you, too. Thanks for sharing your emotions with the whole world! Best from Germany

As I was a job coach this kids. Downs syndrome persons were my favorite. But public i found is ignorant to see what these kids can do. I always said yes they can do the job but they may do it in a different way. They will the ones to show up to work and doinf there job..after employing they are still working and customers love them. As a coach I always saw the willingness to work, to smile and love. I so love your video..people need to learn and we can educate. That's what it's about. I bet ur son is a happy young man with a proud father.. be proud dad

Thanks for sharing this story Robb, it is never too late to speak up. Not everyone can convey their true intent in the moment and sometimes that comes at the expense of the message. In all honesty you will probably reach more people who need to hear this the way this has played out.

We all have those moments... we want to say something but while you are hesitating the moment just passes. You are very brave to make this video to tell publicly that you didn't correct the ignorance immediatly. But because you missed that moment and you made video about it, now more people including me know that down syndrome is a gift not an illness. Thank you.

I somehow came across this and clicked to watch. Thank you for this because after watching this I asked myself well what is down syndrome and how do I or what would I have said if any of my kids asked me what down syndrome or why does he or she seem different. like you said there are teachers and learners and this was a learning moment for me. Thankyou for this beautiful video.
