I love my Fujifilm X-E2! The image quality is great, the body is light. I always use a 35mm f1.4. this combo suits me just fine, every day. I don't have the need to upgrade, not yet anyway. Thanks for your review.
Been using my X-E2 for over a year as my second camera. Wouldn't part with it for the world. That, coupled with the 27mm f/2.8 pancake is a great combination 👍
I've an XE-2s and it's a brilliant little camera. Great for travel and street photography. Don't need anything bang up to date. Bought it new from Fujifilm Refurbished at a big discount along with 18-55 kit and I've added a 23mm f2. Great value camera with stunning lenses..

I received a review copy of the X-E-2 prior to its release and it's been my go to ever since. Update have expanded the ISO and digital shutter. It lacks some bells and whistles of newer cameras but it's a solid, reliable camera. Add in an extended hand-grip, I have the X-E1 grip, a thumb-grip and a brass soft release button. I feel no need to upgrade to a different rig.

Go out and find a used Voigtlander 35mm 2.5 Color Skopar (and a helicoid adapter off ebay) and slap it on an EX1/2/2s. They look like they were made for each other!
I am thinking to pick up the xpro1, would you still recommend it at this point? How slow the AF after the latest firmware update compared to the xpro2? Thanks
The Xpro-1 is slower than the Xpro-2 depending on the lens used. I still use the Xpro-1 because of its simplicity. More than not it is the lens, light and creativity that makes a good photo in my belief. The firmware upgrades in the Xpro-1 really did help a lot and makes it worth while as tool to make great images. Fast AF doesn't make a good picture...if that were the case Leica would be done. Get one and try it. For the price you can't lose.
I just bought a used X-E2s. I bought it because I wanted a smaller camera for a upcoming trip and do not want to lug my D750 with me. For what it is it a nice system. I was considering spending the extra money and going with a X-E3 but in the end opted for a used. I have a 16MP Nikon Coolpix A and the quality is great. I have made prints at least 13x19 in size without any quality issues (16MP is more than enough). I had originally looked at a X100(x) because of the viewfinder but opted for the E series as I could change lenses and still have some sort of viewfinder. The main reason I considered the E3 is the fact that it will work with Fuji X Raw Studio and Capture One Pro 12 Fuji Express's Film simulations. I am a RAW shooter but still want to get those "Fuji Colors" that everyone speaks of. In the end the Silkypix processor was good enough for me and I also have the option of using Rawtherapee or Iridient Developer with imitation simulations. If anyone is considering getting one of these in 2019 they are a steal. I have seen the bodies in the $200-$300 range and a 18-55mm averaging around $300.
I love my X-E2! I have the Fuji 18-55 on it and it creates lovely images. I also adapt some decades old film era primes to it. I plan on getting an X-T4 in the future but will keep my X-E2.
My one is the X E 1 with old Nikkor and Pentax Takumar lenses and I'm very happy with , perhaps the only thing I miss is better focus peaking and split focus screen otherwise for street photography this camera is a gem, do I need the latest one ? I rather spend the cash on lenses really.
Investing in lenses is always best, especially the level of most modern cameras. I guess for what you do the peaking and split could be a big help though.
I got this camera with the 23mm f2 specifically to be a sort of cheap street photography camera that I could keep in my bag everywhere I went and it is so good. The rangefinder-style makes it very good for street and candid photography. It seems even smaller because of the placement of the EVF. A week after I got the camera I ended up buying the 50mm f2 to use the camera for portraits because I liked it so much. The BIG MISTAKE I made was not knowing that there were two older wide-angle pancake lenses that you can find on ebay that would have made the E2 a true street photo beast by cutting down on the size of the camera and also making it look less imposing. I really wish I had gone for the pancake lens even though the new 23mm f2 is a really great lens. (Also, I got the 23mm lens in silver because black was sold out and I really wish I waited because once I got the 50mm in black now the silver lens looks so stupid to me but that's not that important).
I wish to purchase a preowned one but here at my place only a few people uses fuji system. I love street photography and landscapes. I was able to test it out from a camera shop and I liked the design, usability and it suits my style. The button dials made the camera so much fun to use. Can't wait to own a fuji. I'm on a break with photography I'm still saving for the camera 😀 My father and sister wants to learn too. I'll keep in mind about the lenses you used. Thank for sharing your experiences 😊
I currently use X-E2 (bought it a year ago for $450 complete with 18-55/2.8-4). The only thing I really miss is the tilting screen, will probably switch to X-T20 in the near future.
Really good camera, picked up one recently with the 18-55mm f/2.4-4 lens for £350, really nice feeling camera, even coming from a Nikon D810, the shutter feels just right and the controls are very nice. Only negative seems to be the ergonomics on the grip which could do with being a bit bigger/deeper.
I recently purchased the X-E3 - my first Fujifilm camera - a good friend was so impressed he went out and bought a very nice, used X-E2. I have to say I was just as impressed, the ergonomics are nice, the built in flash useful and the overall layout intuitive; a mini X-Pro 1 I thought. No need to cover up the name.
Great reviews Damian. You have a great common-sense and 'real world' approach to photography and equipment, which is refreshing to find! I have an XT-2 and XT-1 and whilst they are little short of wonderful in terms of spec' & versatility etc., I find myself reaching for my XE2s, which I bought second-hand for a couple of hundred (GP) pounds. It has become my go-to &, go-anywhere camera and I have had great fun with it and it has delivered consistently great results.
I switched from a full frame Nikon d600 to this last year. I wanted something smaller and easier to carry around. Overall the image quality is great with the Fuji glass. But that is also one of its weak points. You have limited lens options and what is available from Fuji tends to be a bit pricy. The only other downside with this camera is poor dynamic range. It’s not terrible but if you’re coming from full frame it’s very noticeable. Considering how much this body goes for now it’s still a good deal if you’re looking for something compact.
I find that dynamic range to be fairly impressive, especially if you use the dynamic range boosting option. I have a Sony A7II & Nikon D5600 and I think the dynamic range of the E2 is just as good as the full-frame A7II and better than the Nikon DX crop. I find the bigger issue is that the E2 is not nearly as reliable (if that's the right word) as a DSLR or the Sony A7II mirrorless. There is something about the fujifilm E2 (and even the E3) that feels like it is just not something you would use in a professional situation. Fuji tends to be kind of laggy and sluggish to use. The menu is very complicated and while I had a difficult time adapting to the Sony menu system after 15+ years using Nikons, it was still easier than the fuji menu. The fuji menu just seems unintuitive. Fuji cameras can sometimes be incredibly fast autofocusing but then it will randomly have focusing issues. The Fuji focus peaking is great for manual focusing but sometimes I find that it isn't accurate or that it jumps from the foreground being in focus to me having to go all the way to infinity, which is really weird, so I don't really trust myself using a manual focus lens on the camera. On my Sony or Nikon cameras I can quickly zoom in to 100% while shooting and check my focus and zoom back out and shoot and then zoom in on the playback photo and double check and it's very fast to do but on the Fuji it takes a long time to navigate around the camera to do stuff like that so it's just not practical. The shutter on the Fuji E2 is sometimes very responsive but other times it can feel laggy. The ES shutter is great for shooting silently and at crazy fast shutter speeds, which is really nice and I wish all cameras let you shoot with an ES. I only use the ES when I need to be discreet though because I have missed shots using the camera with the ES, thinking I took a picture when I didn't. So dynamic range and picture quality are fine with the E2. It is the handling of the camera that I think makes all the Fujifilm cameras seem like they are made to be a personal camera for a professional photographer.
I want to get a manual Voigtlander and a X-T1, X-T10/20 or X-E2. I have a X100. Maybe I should just get a TCL and call it a day. What do you think? I never handled any of these bodies. X-T1 is my favorite for now because it has a big evf, a tilting screen, lots of manual controls and the body is weather sealed, for what it's worth.
The weather sealing thing is kind of BS. I've seen plenty of weather sealed cameras break or get damaged in the rain or get dust in them. I also had plenty of cameras that weren't weather sealed that I beat the crap out of and they never let me down. I wouldn't worry too much about the weather sealing and most people who have worked with a lot of cameras or worked at a camera store or something like that would agree. I wouldn't get an X-T1 or X-t10 in 2019. You might as well get an X-t2 but the X-E2 or the X-T20 would be the best bang for your buck in 2019 and they are both cameras that are still good even in 2019.
I kind of disagree regarding the video capabilities of the XE-2. I've been using mine with vintage M42 lenses( Helios and Pentacor 30mm f3.5) for Travel videos, and it is amazing! A very very good camera with same sensor as the Xpro 1 but much lighter...And it looks good too!
Would you recommend using the SanDisk Extreme Pro 170 MB/s 128gb memory card with this camera with the XE-2? I’d like to by for future 4 K video use when I buy a Fuji XT3 in the future.
if you are not pro. than this or xt 10 is fantastic camera to work with. You can do alot with this cameras, right glass and it dream to work with. If you are pro and paid for gigs than maybe you should go for newer stuff but if you know your camrea what it could do than you it's up to you. I bought fuji xt10 month ago and i'm more than happy. Fuji does great work with their cameras.
I have never really loved my X-E2. I have it still and upgraded it with the latest software. Now I also have the X-T30, that is so much better. The main difference is how the sky's look like in landscape scenes. Sorry to say, but that is my experiance. The X-E2 is my back up camera. And yes, I use the DR options, but that does not help a lot.
I just ordered a Fujifilm xe2s it should be here this week. I have it paired with the xf 18-55mm 2.8-4 and meike 25mm 1.8 I wanna buy the 18mm f2 and 23mm 1.4 next but I’ll be happy with the f2 version as well.
Got one included in a job lot of used lenses. The sensor was filthy and has some hairline scratches, which is why it was binned I guess. But it works perfectly and I cannot see the scratches in images. Benefit of X-Trans sensor I guess. Using it with a cheapo 15-45 lens as a walkabout camera. Love it.....
Owning a xe1 living in the car, and went to buy a XE3 ended up getting the XE2s walk round camera when I don't use my T2 s slower yes but handling, fun to use the 1 2/2s are organically sublime
The X-E2 with the latest firmware is almost identical to the X-E2s. I use a X-E2s (along with a X-T2) and I like it a lot. It's still a great camera for my needs in 2019. The only things I miss are a dedicated ISO dial and joystick like the X-T2. To be honest it's poor for video by current standards but as you said people don't buy this camera for video
I've had the Fuji X100T for a while now and it's definitely my favorite camera. I own a 5D mark IV... and the Fuji XT2... but there's something about the X100T that keeps me latched. It's simply fucking awesome. But then I was thinking, what if this body had interchangeable lenses? And boom I see this little guy. I really think I'm going to look this camera up on CL and give it a go.
I wish I can find new (boxed) the X-E2 or X-E3 or even both ! Do you think there are still available bodies in the market stock ? and hello from Athens
I should think there are E3 bodies available now more so. You never know though, I've seen some T1 bodies going this week so old gear in great shape is still out there to be bought!
Love your videos. I am thinking to pick up the xpro1, would you still recommend it at this point? How slow the AF after the latest firmware update compared to the xpro2? Thanks
Ye if you don't mind the slower speed then it can still be very useable and very cheap. I haven't used one for a while but the AF wasn't a huge problem for me at least.
I still care about the "made in Japan" part. I bought a XT30ii, which took great images but felt far more toy like/cheaper than my XT2 and Xpro 3 and could not work out what it was. Started to compare all the camera's in my hand and then noticed, "made in china" on the XT30, my other two, "made in in Japan! There is a difference in quality 😎
The problem is fuji just put the xe3 on sale for 500.🙃🙃 you going to end filming on any camera at this point. The real problem is I only have access to a phone and I can't find any editing app that reads the files. I don't understand why it's so hard to find a app that reads these files
@@unbroken1010 no problem, I like it so much it is the one and only app that I pay for. On my laptop I use Lightworks. But when travelling I only take a phone, I travel light.
Been thinking of grabbing one of these and using it with he 27mm lens, or trading the lens in for an x100s. For street or carry around, what do you think Damian ?
X-E2s, probably won’t part with it, except for a Canon M100 maybe. 16mp is great for low light. I leave my 27mm on all the time. It takes a few seconds to boot up. But it is real solid. Video is trash. And you have to know what you’re doing with WB, because the older Fujifilm cameras are punishing with the WB. Get a thumbs up grip, it changes the point of contact and stops the pivot from heavier lenses.
I just got mine two weeks ago after weeks of trying to find long term reviews of X-E3's owners... couldn't find any! That's what push me to buy "made in japan" X-E2! I kinda doubt that all new stuff added to X-E3 will work flawlessly: touchscreen & joystick! From all review's i've seen the touchscreen was working at the edge of .. "с'mon, goddamn it".
Does anybody perceive a noticeable difference in Japanese made bodies compared to the newer, entry level camera now made in China? I’ve had both and can’t say I’ve just noticed......maybe the older ones were built to last longer? Not sure; just posing the question.
I don't really, it's a good question as to which brands really have a noticeable difference these days. It used to a be a badge of honour and a genuinely good one but honestly, China is the factory of the world and I think there is still some prejudice to anything MADE IN CHINA. I haven't had an issue with my gear.
I hope you bought it already. Got mine 7/10 condition used (scratches, burnished paint, etc.) but works like a charm! I actually prefer to use it over my X-T20
@@DamianBrown I dropped from a D750 back to a D3 recently, ergonomically just perfect. The sound of that shutter going off cor, every slap is a little bit of joy and makes me want to fire it as often as possible! Not the most subtle beast in the world however but a timeless beauty!

I bought a used xm1 to test out the fuji system alongside my vintage lens. I now have an xt1 as well and also thinking about getting rid of my DSLR kit
Damian Brown its a forgotten camera, mainly because it came and went quickly. it can be a pain to use compared to the other feature richer models but once you get past that.... its a fuji xa body with an xtrans sensor and a flippy screen. BTW i do find it interesting that fuji now have an xt body with a standard type sensor in the xt100 with an even flippier screen. keep up the good stuff. merry xmas and UP THE VILLA!!
This has been my sole camera for the last few years. Great for travel and easy to take with you anywhere and the image quality is all I need. I even shot a few seasons of my daughter's Junior Olympic gymnastics meets (think indoor, very bad lighting, slightly predictable but fast moving subjects) with this. Did OK. However, I still watch all the new body releases from Fuji with great interest - mainly because I have never been 100% happy with how it feels to shoot with. The ergonomics are not great but I'm not sure I want to invest in a grip or thumb rest. It also is not the most "responsive" camera when it comes to turning back on. It actually starts up faster from being completely off vs. starting up from sleep. Focus is OK with the 18-55 but I do miss shots waiting for it to wake back up and find focus. If i do upgrade, I will keep it as I find it's fun to shoot older manual focus lenses with. Never gave up my 1980s Nikon 105/2.5
well, it's 2020 and I'm still using x-e2 :)

Why? I thought the dual card slots will help in pro gigs.
Great comments Jose, thanks! Enjoy
i still using a X-e2s, with a kit 18-55mm, 35mmf2 and rokinon 85mm f1.4, a very good camera body
I love my X-E2! I have the Fuji 18-55 on it and it creates lovely images. I also adapt some decades old film era primes to it. I plan on getting an X-T4 in the future but will keep my X-E2.
Vintage lenses on Fuji is so good!! Ye, loads of life in your E2 yet
Definitely switch to the XE2. Much easier to focus manually.
This camera is still useable. Paired with the right lens I can use it for street photography. Wish to own a fuji camera 😍 👌
Nice combo and price.
Mini X-Pro1 :D Good name!
great Job mate, enjoyed that review - just because im waiting for my xe2 to be delivered ;)
Thanks, enjoy!
Thanks Martin, I appreciate it!
Great video Damian. Have had this camera for nearly a year and you are bang on. £160 well spent. Thank you
Bargain!
You're probably better at video than me :) Thanks for the comments!
Exactly! Thanks!
Great review! Shot mine E2 in Monochrome only! Love it especially with film BKT. Get BW pics with all 3 color filter.
Great idea!
Wow this sounds really interesting. Let me try it out on my little x-e2
Great combo!!!
Thanks for this! Suddenly I remembered that Gueorgui Pinkhassov (Magnum Agency) also talked a lot about this amazing but slow camera.
Owning a xe1 living in the car, and went to buy a XE3 ended up getting the XE2s walk round camera when I don't use my T2 s slower yes but handling, fun to use the 1 2/2s are organically sublime
Nice choice Dennis!
Its a great little camera and really who needs anything more.
Tech chasers. 99.99% photographers don't need more.
Exactly. I just replaced my XT3 with one.
Just bought the XE2 body and now I am just waiting for the pancake 27mm 2.8 to arrive, hope this camera lasts some years..
Awesome setup. The 27 rocks..best at 4-8. I miss my X-E1. Bought the X-E3 but considering selling for an X-E2. I don’t like the touchscreen.
PhotoTube do you see any difference between the e2 and the e2s
Thanks for this review! Only few new review are there. I recently bought one.. 😁 I'll subscribe.
Thanks John, enjoy the camera!!
Nice review clear and easy to understand. Thank You Damian for all your info very helpful !
This or the XT10? I'm gonna buy one on ebay before xmas. I already have the XT3 but I prefer the *filmic* quality of the old sensor.
Sorry, thought I replied! Probably a bit late now BUT .. tough choice. Which did you go for?
@@DamianBrown I managed to get an unused used XE2 for £200. I love it. Especially with the tiny 27mm.
Ye worth checking out, and should be dirt cheap now.
Nice to hear you saying so . Thank you Damian
Damian,
I have seen a dealer advertising an XE2S, open box, but essentially new, for £399. Do you think that is a good deal?
Hi there what is your opinion on the xe2s, is the image quality any different?
Great images. All jpeg straight out camera?
Yes
I still care about the "made in Japan" part. I bought a XT30ii, which took great images but felt far more toy like/cheaper than my XT2 and Xpro 3 and could not work out what it was. Started to compare all the camera's in my hand and then noticed, "made in china" on the XT30, my other two, "made in in Japan! There is a difference in quality 😎
Thanks for this!!!
The problem is fuji just put the xe3 on sale for 500.🙃🙃 you going to end filming on any camera at this point. The real problem is I only have access to a phone and I can't find any editing app that reads the files. I don't understand why it's so hard to find a app that reads these files
Try KineMaster works fine on my phone with film from my XT2 which is very similar to an XE3
@@richiehodges84 thanks 👍
@@unbroken1010 no problem, I like it so much it is the one and only app that I pay for. On my laptop I use Lightworks. But when travelling I only take a phone, I travel light.
Love my X-E2. The xe3 is smaller than the xe2. But like you said for a couple hundred you have a very capable camera. And yes! Made in Japan! ✌🏽
:D
Been thinking of grabbing one of these and using it with he 27mm lens, or trading the lens in for an x100s. For street or carry around, what do you think Damian ?
I owned the X100S and loved it .. tough choice now. I'm leaning towards this now though!
Good tips!
Bought last year a X-E1 still very capable camera, sometime later in the year I'll sell the X-E1 and jump to the X-E2 for a nice price
XE2 is a first-rate camera, I have 2 ....
Nothing wrong with the E2 at all!!!
The touchscreen on my X-E3 makes me miss my X-E1. Likely picking up an X-E2.
JPG Only the xe3 is an excellent camera too
Does anybody perceive a noticeable difference in Japanese made bodies compared to the newer, entry level camera now made in China? I’ve had both and can’t say I’ve just noticed......maybe the older ones were built to last longer? Not sure; just posing the question.
I don't really, it's a good question as to which brands really have a noticeable difference these days. It used to a be a badge of honour and a genuinely good one but honestly, China is the factory of the world and I think there is still some prejudice to anything MADE IN CHINA. I haven't had an issue with my gear.
I found one for $200 US dollars. Is it worth it?
I think so, if it's in good condition it should have plenty of life in it
Make an X-pro 1 in 2019. I need that last push loool
:D Just do it
I hope you bought it already. Got mine 7/10 condition used (scratches, burnished paint, etc.) but works like a charm! I actually prefer to use it over my X-T20
Its my camera too..great camera
Nice!
I just replaced my XE2 with the XT20...thrilled with my decision :)
I do love the T20 :D
I own both of incl. some other Fuji x cams and the x-e2 is still my fav of all
Are you happy with the xt20? Did you miss your xe2? Would you prefer the X-E3 over the xt20?
What about the xe1?
Good call
I have the same setup. xe2 and 35/2.
Love it!
It just begs to be picked up and used, nirvana, finally'!
Lovely little bargain.
Lots of pros still use the Nikon d3 if that matters
Absolutely class camera! No reason not to use it, unless it's beaten to death of course but it's like a brick so takes a serious workload.
@@DamianBrown I dropped from a D750 back to a D3 recently, ergonomically just perfect. The sound of that shutter going off cor, every slap is a little bit of joy and makes me want to fire it as often as possible! Not the most subtle beast in the world however but a timeless beauty!
Got mine back in 2014 with the 18-55mm kit and the Rokinon 85mm f1.4 and recently added the Rokinon 12mm f2. I keep using it for concert and theater photography shooting mostly manually and still really enjoying this little baby !
Here You have some pics taken with my Fuji stuff ( Also have the T2, but I always find myself grabbing the E2 ) instagram.com/sergiocruzing/?hl=en
Checking Your vids out and found a lot of informative and useful content, man. Keep it up !

Thanks Sergio!
I woudn't call that bulge on the right side a grip.
It could be worse :) And a lot better. Mind you it's all personal I think.
That lens is ugly..
I bought a used xm1 to test out the fuji system alongside my vintage lens. I now have an xt1 as well and also thinking about getting rid of my DSLR kit
The m1 is one fuji I haven't tried!!
I think you hit the nail on the head, for fast moving situations there are pros to upgrading away from this!
