Back to the abysmal days of Craig Grando artwork, ugh.
I’ve been completely done with ATO for several years now, no regrets. I was consistently finding their releases much more frustrating than fun.

Hi Wayne. Stalingrad and Manila's artwork was done by Charles Kiebler. He and the late Rick Barber are my all-time favorite wargame artists.
My first thought when you showed the map was "Where's the AV/DV track from Manila?" I think that subconsciously is why I liked it better than Stalingrad: I don't like flipping D20s around, trying to find the right number, but the track was a breeze.

Rick Barber, Charles Kibler, and Mark Mahaffey are probably my top 3 wargame artists. The map for this game (and Cassino) are just duds. I don't think the counters are particularly thematic or attractive either.

I agree with your comments on the game. I picked this up because I really enjoy the system. I give it a pass on production values as the game is still very playable and you do get two solo games with the magazine. I have read that there will be a Berlin 1945 game using this system coming out which I’ll be interested to see.

Still waiting for my copy to cross the Atlantic to Europe, but glad to hear that this one is atleast to your liking.
Do agree on the artwork, the artwork itself is fine if you ask me, just the map colours look a tiny bit off,
For the counters, at the first the German counters where just numbers numbers on the backside and Michael had to ask to improve it by adding some type of icon or image of it.
But still looking forward to playing it myself! Curious how Cassino will play out as I have no idea what system is used there.
Just wondering, but do you happen to know some more other notable solo magazine games? Never really knew about magazine wargames till this one and intrested to see whats out there thats worth looking into. Thanks in advance!

There are a few really good solo magazine wargames I've played over the years: Bastogne, Forgotten Pacific Battles and Drive on Suez (all 3 from World at War magazine), Midway Solitaire (although I'd get the Deluxe version), Descent on Malta (Strategy and Tactics magazine), Operation Ichi-Go (Against the Odds magazine). There are a ton more to explore, just check out those magazine's past catalogs of games.

@@WayneHansen Thank you for the reply!
Currently checking your videos of the ones you mentioned, not really relevant to this game, but since we are anyway talking about it.
Drive on Suez looks really intresthing, only thing is that there is not much info on it.
So on average, how long does that game take to play & how difficult is it to win? (I don't mind difficult games, but in general not the one's where you win maybe once every 10 or 15 games)

Good solo magazine wargames: There are two in Against the Odds "Islands of the Damned" (one of them created the system this game is based on). There is a good one in "Four Roads to Paris." If you can find the old 1986 Wargamer issue in the 2nd hand markets, "First Team: Vietnam" is a good one.
