- Weirton (/ˈwirtən/) is a city in Brooke and Hancock counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Located primarily in Hancock County, the city lies in the northern portions of the state's Northern Panhandle region. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 19,746. Weirton is a principal city of the Weirton-Steubenville, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a 2010 population of 124,454 residents. Additionally, Weirton is part of Greater Pittsburgh, the 20th largest combined statistical area in the United States with a 2019 estimated population of 2,635,228.
Historically, Weirton's economy, as well as that of the region, was dominated by the steel industry, with the biggest employer being ArcelorMittal.
Over the years as the steel industry declined, the local economy has become more diversified, with retail services and medical services recording the largest increases.
Weirton Medical Center is a large 238 bed hospital that services patients from all over the region, and is one of the city's largest employers today employing over 1,000 people.
Due to the area's close proximity to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there is also a growing number of workers who work in Pittsburgh and commute from Weirton.
I don’t think there was a better place on earth to grow up in the 50’s and 60’s than Weirton! It was the Wonder Years! You had to live it to really understand how great it was!
Thank you for shedding some light on the town of Weirton. It has been drawing my interest since learning about the history of West Virginia.
Thanks to you and all the people who do theses videos.
They serve a few good purposes. They give people a way to see different places that they normally wouldn't be able to afford or have the time to visit.
They help people who can afford to travel to decide which location they want to travel to.
And the vids give people who are getting ready to retire a chance to look at different places without spending any money travelling around.
Thanks!
It's nice seeing my childhood home. When i look out into the ocean i no longer see steel mill dreams to come true. Thanks to Weirton for making me who I am today.
Currently living in Weirton, great video
So glad I found your video! I'm thinking about relocating to Weirton. I absolutely love it! ❤🌹❤
Just found this video and saw your comment. Did you move to Weirton? How do you like it if you did? How would you compare it to where you came from? I’m familiar with the South Hills of Pittsburgh, don’t live there now but maybe that helps give some perspective. Th la for your input!
Thank you Justin for this video! As a retiree, I am considering a move to Weirton WV from Vermont. Vermont is lovely, but more and more unaffordable!
And filled with liberals
Yes, I am in the same situation as you but in a different State. I like the appeal of WV overall and the definite lower cost of living. I am also considering a trip there and maybe a move.
I lived in Weirton for 6 years and even graduated from high school there, thanks for the trip down memory lane
Love your soundtrack! Hope to visit Weirton when the pandemic restrictions ease.
The Lee Ave bridge was taken out because it was no longer needed after the train stopped coming out of Weirton Steel Mill.
Thanks. I drove through for the first time yesterday. Very interesting for anyone looking for steel and related industrial history - sorry so much it is now past tense. A little difficult to find good parking along route 2 except downtown.
Thanks true
Thanks for the video.I'm interviewing for a couple of positions in PA close to Weirton.I would prefer to keep my state of residence in WV
Would love to know if you moved to Weirton and what you think of it. It will be very helpful for our potential move to the area.
Hello. I would like to know if Weirton WV is a dangerous city, has a lot of crime, murder, violence, and is it a safe city?
Is there a Tim Lawson still there.?
Nice video. I grew up on Route 2 about 40 minutes south of Weirton in a town called Glen Dale. It's been many years since I've been to Weirton. I don't think I saw Weirton High in your video. The baseball field was right beside one of the mills.
I was looking for it when it I went there and I saw a sign but never saw the high school
@@GuyDaniels1991 We thought we might contract black lung disease playing in the outfield so close to all that smoke bellowing out of the plant! lol
Weir High
@@GuyDaniels1991 the school isn’t downtown it’s up on the hill right beside the middle school.
The high school is tucked back away off Red Rider Road
looks like a quiet little town. I like it
Farrel pa
I live in weirton wv
Didn't the band ( crack the sky) originate there?
You should do a tour of Niles Michigan. My good friend loves there. He also works at Walmart and lives in a trailer
I have disavowed from him, he's a buffoon
I'm so glad I came across this. I live in Weirton WV downtown.. Its a small city.. We say we're from n people say we're we say Pittsburgh pa aw ok we know we're that it. N
What...
I live in weirton actually
Oh please tell us what it’s like! Why do you love it? Why do you stay if you don’t? Where have you traveled that is similar to Weirton? I’m so curious and would enjoy learning and getting a better understanding of the area. 😊
@alexaduffield4289 so it's essentially a suburb of PGH. 35 maybe 40 miles from downtown PGH. Close enough to a metro area (and international Airport) for that stuff, but still kinda small town vibe. Some may say a bedroom community. Nothing glamorous but all in all, it's not bad at all.
Hey I live in new Martinsville
Reckless 1984
My boyfriend is from there
I see you were Just in Town today, huh?!
Lol
I am thankful to work at Cleveland Cliffs in weirton making strip steel. One of the best jobs in the area if not the best.
Ummm
@justmike6377 At the time it was, I made 93k my first year and actually liked my job and the guys i worked with. It still would be if the ITC gave a shit about America jobs.
Hey man can you get me a job there
