If you tell me we'll be playing PlayStation games on a device of the size of a PS Memory Card in 20 years time in year 2000, I'd laughing at you, but two decades later here we are.
I mean, the psone was already pretty small 20 years ago, about the same size as the controller. Could fit in my jacket pocket easily. Even with the LCD attachment.

It's amazing how Moore's law keeps electronics getting tinier yet incredibly more powerful and affordable.
I agree that this is primarily a novelty device, but it is surprisingly playable. I play a lot of GBC games and even the occasional PS1 games, as well as Super Mario 64. It all works very well and it's not like I'm playing for hours at a time. Just 20 minute bursts when I'm on the bus or I'm taking my lunch break
More like keychain PS1+TV+controller+many other consoles+all games for those consoles. Imagine saying, to a kid in 1995, this device would one day be released.
I got one of these because of your original video, and it’s amazing. I think this is the smallest possible screen that’s still playable, and the clicky low-travel buttons are surprisingly precise.
@@cagataycakmak2280 It was comfortable for me right from the beginning, but I’ve always liked small electronics. FWIW, I think it’s actually more comfortable than the actual GBA SP. The SP was chunky enough that you had to actually grip it in your hands, leading to strain after a little while. The Funkey is small and light enough, that your grip doesn’t need to be as firm. You can kinda just rest the Funkey on your fingers while pressing buttons with your thumbs. However, this makes the shoulder buttons kinda suck because you have nothing to brace the Funkey against when you press them in unless you do the SP mega-grip again. Kinda hard to explain, but in any case, I’ve found it very comfortable.

@@joelmiller6849 My fingers are also big along with my hands lol, so it’s more than just my grip because sometimes the buttons are kinda annoying to press if they’re to small
There actually is a pocket emulator smaller than the Funkey S called the Pocketsprite, although it has very limited specs and doesn't have the same number of emulator options.
@@jensinamart5153 I knew both funkey can fold thats why its small and the other which u r saying can't be fold its also not having this much variety of game So i like this one only and you
The gba was always my favorite handheld design. With the flood of Chinese handhelds, I cannot understand why we don't have a high quality gba style release with a decent chip set. The 20 dollar one that came out some months ago didn't cut it.
The lack of a headphone jack is a deal breaker. I would never use this thing at home, it's exclusively for using when you're out and about where you don't want to broadcast your game audio to everyone. They should really have thought about that. The weird aspect ratio isn't great either, considering there is room for a wider screen, but I guess they just couldn't find one that was the perfect size. Maybe a future iteration will include a more suitable screen and a headphone jack, if so I would get one.
Playing Crash Bandicoot on this is actually blowing my mind! How in the world can it do that! I love that! My cousin would flip upon seeing me pull this Funkey S out and start playing Crash Bandicoot on it would he would actually flip xD
Omg I want one. I make jewellery, I'd totally make a video game charm bracelet or necklace with this at the centrepiece. It's so pricey though, 65 pounds $113 Canadian. It's so cute but I can't justify that price, even for a "business expense".
It's actually on the cheap side for something like this. Judging by the prices of other boutique/modded handhelds, they could've charged at least $150 USD for this. Modded GBAs are being sold by Retro Modding for several hundred dollars.
Ok, now make one with the same software and hardware, but with a bigger form factor for people with big hands, a nice 3inch ips screen, usb c, and massive battery so you can game for 5+ hours. I know the size is the selling point, but SP form factor and good software is the big one for me.
I loved this video almost as much as I love this teeny handheld, but I had a few comments 1. Just because this thing has a ported version of mario 64 does not mean by any means the rest of the library I'd even playable 2. Asking for usb-c is an unfair critique the peice itself is larger than a micro USB, and its main advantages over micro are things the funkey S didn't need, high capacity data transfer and fast charging, again both things the fun key didn't really have anything to gain from.
if someone made a thing this small this powerfull, how nice would it be if someone made an SP sized equivalent or even better because the performance could scale
On their own website/wiki, they claim the screen is only 50hz. That's a big fat "no thanks" to this. Which sucks because I love the size and form factor. Plus the chip is only 1.2g, thats barely into "ok" territory, though the 64m ram is lower than "ok".... All for $80.
at that size, with old games, and all the optimizations they've done you really don't notice it. and I find it a bit strange to get hung up over raw specs, when what really matters is how it runs in practice.
Considering that in practice 50FPS on the FunKey does not cause screen tearing, and I don't see how it makes much of a difference; if I didn't know better, just by using the FunKey I would have thought it was displaying the normal 60FPS. And in the end, it's really what the device can do, and not the specifications, that matter. PS1 emulation is certainly much better than many devices with higher specifications that the FunKey, with the bar to emulating anything more demanding than that being much higher than a bit more RAM could do (which wouldn't fit in the FunKey anyways).
@@blkout714 The emulators are included with the device; all that needs to be added by the user are the BIOS files for the GBA and PS1 and then whichever games one owns.
wtf? are the commenters people that work for funkey? 50hz is noticeable no matter the screen size, since it has a direct relation to the amount of times a screen refreshes (and subsequently frame rate). so Yes even at that "screen size" (LOL) a 50hz screen is going to play games almost 20% slower than norm. All 60fps games, no matter the system get chopped by almost 20%, without exception.
One criticism I have for this handheld is that if you want to change the aspect ratio, you need to manually set it every time you start a game. It's stretched by default
as of the latest update it'll remember the setting per game, and you can set a different default per emulator by dropping a config file in the right folder.

@@cooliecoolster9594 thanks, I've been trying to find a place where I can talk to other backers.
That og purple 😍😍 man I've been following this since you got the prototype, I really want one now 😂 maybe when my student finance comes in, I might treat myself 😉
11:37 "Have a gre-"
I feel like the screen could of been bigger, look at all that boarder.
You have to include the PS1 game Hoshi de Hakken!! Tamagotchi to your Funkey s library. That really is a very special and specific gaming wish a few of us had.
That looks like it’d be really nice but my hands are to big. They’ve cramped over things that are bigger than that so sadly I’ll have to pass on that even if I do love the design of it
Learn how to adjust your grip.
@@joelmiller6849 My fingers are also big along with my hands lol, so it’s more than just my grip because sometimes the buttons are kinda annoying to press if they’re to small
New here and loving your content! I am so excited to see more reform you dude! Also the mat purple and white is very sharp!
I
Want
_SMALLER_
Great video btw, this looks great!
Thanks!
There actually is a pocket emulator smaller than the Funkey S called the Pocketsprite, although it has very limited specs and doesn't have the same number of emulator options.
@@jensinamart5153 I knew both funkey can fold thats why its small and the other which u r saying can't be fold its also not having this much variety of game
So i like this one only and you
For gamers this is a flex 💪
Wow the interface on this looks better than 90% of other retro handhelds.
I neeeed it so badly! It's adorable 😭
I just splurged on one, whoops xD so excited though. I'm glad I was holding off on getting a handheld emulator until now.
Is it as good as it looks?
@@mastmark8179 no idea only ordered it last night haha. Gotta wait till April :x
@@WildPortraitArtist oof, thats a delay
Its officially the cutest thing ever, I checked
Awesome little device but I'd love to see a wider color selection besides white, purple and... purple
My giant hands be damned, I want this
The gba was always my favorite handheld design. With the flood of Chinese handhelds, I cannot understand why we don't have a high quality gba style release with a decent chip set. The 20 dollar one that came out some months ago didn't cut it.
I changed my mine I would love the original purple and thanks for liking my comment last time
How are the cutscenes from games? I'd like to buy it for PS1 Resident Evil DC-3. I have alot of downtime at work and this lil thing wud be great.
I'd love a Funkey S dock! So you could attach a controller and output to TV that'd make this the ULTIMATE!
And sorry for being late I was on a road trip since we’re on spring break
I need one. Amazing. I have so many retro devices.....but this.......I NEED IT.
I think the entire community has 1 question...
CAN IT RUN DOOM!!!
r/woooosh
id love to buy this but im 6.2 and this looks like hell to play
The lack of a headphone jack is a deal breaker. I would never use this thing at home, it's exclusively for using when you're out and about where you don't want to broadcast your game audio to everyone. They should really have thought about that. The weird aspect ratio isn't great either, considering there is room for a wider screen, but I guess they just couldn't find one that was the perfect size. Maybe a future iteration will include a more suitable screen and a headphone jack, if so I would get one.
Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Hell yes
Playing Crash Bandicoot on this is actually blowing my mind! How in the world can it do that! I love that! My cousin would flip upon seeing me pull this Funkey S out and start playing Crash Bandicoot on it would he would actually flip xD
Exactly what i was looking for
Omg I want one.
After using the Pocket stripe, Funkey S is fully usable.
man, this is just perfect, amazing and immaculate...
the way you say twitter makes me think of Wurzel Gummidge
that indigo clam looks mighty nice rn!
Ok, now make one with the same software and hardware, but with a bigger form factor for people with big hands, a nice 3inch ips screen, usb c, and massive battery so you can game for 5+ hours. I know the size is the selling point, but SP form factor and good software is the big one for me.
Make a GB Micro clone. That's the form factor I want.
I live on the beach. What is the best handheld for direct sunlight? waterproof is a bonus
As much how cool that looks. JESUS IT'S SMALL.
I loved this video almost as much as I love this teeny handheld, but I had a few comments
1. Just because this thing has a ported version of mario 64 does not mean by any means the rest of the library I'd even playable

That's my jam in the background....
This is cool as a novelty, but I think Anbernic nailed it with the 280v in terms of small size/usability
@@cooliecoolster9594 how do you get the PlayStation emulator on it?
@@blkout714 The emulators are included with the device; all that needs to be added by the user are the BIOS files for the GBA and PS1 and then whichever games one owns.
wtf? are the commenters people that work for funkey? 50hz is noticeable no matter the screen size, since it has a direct relation to the amount of times a screen refreshes (and subsequently frame rate). so Yes even at that "screen size" (LOL) a 50hz screen is going to play games almost 20% slower than norm. All 60fps games, no matter the system get chopped by almost 20%, without exception.
That purple one looks dope
It's impressive it plays megadrive/ snes games, let alone Mario 64.
Looks like 2 og gameboy games on top of each other
This one absolutely makes me open my wallet!
One criticism I have for this handheld is that if you want to change the aspect ratio, you need to manually set it every time you start a game. It's stretched by default
the latest firmware fixed that
as of the latest update it'll remember the setting per game, and you can set a different default per emulator by dropping a config file in the right folder.
