Heritage Restoration and Design Studio traveled to McClean County Illinois to restore two twenty foot tall stained glass windows. The glass had aged and was suffering from a variety of issues such cracks in panels, failing lead came, and a nasty gray coating of dust. To remedy this issue, the glass was removed panel by panel and taken to our stained glass studio in Peoria, Illinois.
The glass was cleaned to scrub off the layers of junk that had built up on its surface. Once this film was removed, we replaced any lead came that had become loose. Glass cracks were fused to prevent them from spreading.
Originally, the plan was to take out the old wooden frames from the church and reinstall the windows with fresh aluminum frames. However, no aluminum supplier to fit this project into their schedule for many months. As such, we decided to use treated lumber instead.
Building a pair of frames that are over twenty feet tall takes quite a lot of floor space. As you can see in the video, just one frame dominated most of the walk room in our workshop.
The frames needed to be build to exact dimensions in order for the glass to be securely held in place. Make the frame too big and the panels will fall right out.
It took two months to build, adjust, treat, stain, and finiish the two frames. At that time, the lumber sections and stained glass was taken back to McClean county and reinstalled in their church. We had some minor delays due to rainy days, but at last the re-installation was successfully completed.
