First class in XPT is not much extra cost. Difference is greater seat recline, availability of sleeper cabins (extra cost) on overnight routes, and not having to cope with crowds of backpackers (in non-Covid times). XPTs are quite old (from early 80s) and being replaced soon. They are capable of over 160kph, but are limited by steep and winding tracks that follow much the same corridors as in the steam era. Trip over the Blue Mountains to Lithgow and Bathurst to Orange is quite picturesque.
