    • @pricture
      @pricture 5 лет назад +36

      Same. I tried playing KOTOR again with mods and even SWOTR (both made by Bioware), but it just wouldn't cut it. Mass Effect is truly one of a kind.
      EDIT: In addition, the video *"Domino Worldbuilding and the Brilliance of Mass Effect"* by Shamus Young helped me understand why. From the comments...
      _"Other games had ‘known lore’ (Star Wars, AD&D) to lean on, whereas Mass Effect had to manually build that world, and yet did it in a way that remained exciting and immersive. In Star Wars you don't get to know the other species in the Galaxy at any depth whatsoever. Now maybe there's shit you need to read that's not in any of the shows or movies, but Mass effect puts it's entire universe front and center, so you can get entirely immersed in it. In Star Wars the only thing you're concerned about is Jedis, sith, empire, republic, rebellion and resistance....that's literally it...and the vast majority are humans"_
      _"[Mass Effect's] lore is all used for the purpose of the narrative, there isn't "detail for the sake of detail". Matt Colville has a video on this, "Lore vs Writing" explaining how there is a tendency for new dungeon masters (and by extension, fiction writers) to create all these details for the world but the players are not interested because they didn't create an interesting plot that made those details relevant. Details not tied to a story tend to become a bunch of "blah blah". I feel like these are lessons you wouldn't learn by scrolling through the wiki of your favorite fictional franchise, ie Star Wars. I think this is why I prefer Mass Effect (up to the last 10 minutes of ME3) to Star Wars. In Star Wars every bit of history and lore tends to be made up after the fact, in reaction to something the writers thought would look cool on screen. The ME writers did a lot of world building work up front, and created a story to fit inside of that world. This makes Star Wars writers look incredibly lazy in comparison."_

      @@pricture I mean I think it's because star wars was written by multiple people all over the place so there are different quality of work depending on authors, etc; I love the Star Wars universe, but there's too much focus on basically on one era or so of the star wars universe. They created thousands of years of history set before the movies yet they barely dig into it.

    What they did to the Citadel in the later games was a travesty. People complain about the elevators, but they made the Citadel feel like one big place, because a specific elevator took you one place. But the later games, you got in one elevator and selected a section you wanted to visit, each section could have been miles away from the other, it felt completely disjointed. And I'd also prefer to see my characters riding the elevator, listening to the radio news or hearing dialogue between my squad-mates, both of which the first game did, yet the later two just gave you a loading screen. It completely removed the immersion.

    This theme always makes me think of the docking area where all of the refugees are shacking up in Mass Effect 3. I always liked how this area along with others on the Citadel evolve as you progress through the main story. You gradually see this area fill up with more desperate people and their families all looking for safe refuge and waiting (some seemingly in vain) to hear word from their loved ones. The wounded and dying all cramped together in close quarters. This track is kind of a calming, but somber accompaniment to everything that's happening around me. Wasn't a fan of how ME3 reused so many tracks from the first 2 games but I have to say the use of this track in the refugee camp was pretty inspired. What was once a theme that represented humanity's bright future is now contrasted by the dire state the galaxy is now in. Seeing all those people living out of shipping containers unsure of what will happen to them with this playing in the background was pretty impactful.

    I've never played Mass Effect 3. I played Mass Effect 2 once and thought it was good, but not for me. But I absolutely love the original Mass Effect. I've played it over and over and over. I wish we had got a sequel to that game.

    • @toko96
      @toko96 7 месяцев назад +4

      ME 2 Is arguably the best in the series. The writing, expansion of the first game's narrative into darker, more grey themes, the environmental storytelling, characters, lore, music and the main mission itself all combine to form a totally believable universe. The sub plots within ME2 are excellent. ME3 is an enjoyable game, you're strapped in for the ride - many of your decisions and choices from the first and second entries wrap up in the third game. Minus the ending, its also a classic. IMO ME2>ME1>ME3. But even so I think I'd rate the first game more just for nostalgia and a kind of "innocence" that it portrays. You should definitely give it another go, pick up MELE and have another try.

    • @AndorianBlues
      @AndorianBlues 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@toko96 It's funny, many of the things you mention liking are things I really didn't like. The writing and the attempt at darker themes left me cold, and I especially disliked the pivot to more orchestral music, which I found monumentally disappointing after the amazing synth focused soundtrack of the original. The game just never felt to me like a sequel to what I liked about the original, more like a "dark" gritty reboot. It had none of the throwback 70s science fiction vibes that the original had, instead pivoting to more generic military science fiction. I know my view isn't the usual one though, and most people love it.

      You do realize that ME2 and 3 are almost completely unchanged, right? This means that you will be paying for the ME3 endings not once, but twice - AND there will be no ME3 Multiplayer (the only reason to purchase ME3). I might get the legendary edition when the price is right and only play ME and ME2 - maybe. I pre-ordered ME3 like an idiot and got the "Day 1" DLC, which was content that was cut, removed, and re-installed simply to drive up profits. I'm very jaded about ME3 and all post ME2 content from BioWare.

    Mass effect 1 is the best out of all three games by far. I love them all but because the story shifted away from dark energy buildup and the reapers thinking human DNA was the best thing to make a reaper out of just for that it kind of makes mass effect 2 feel like a side quest. In the third game non of that matters anymore because the reapers are just trying to keep synthetics from wiping out all organic life. But I still love all three games the first one has a special place in my heart though. I love exploring the galaxy and driving around on different planets. I also love the fact that you have a dangerous villain like saren that you have to chase down and defeat in the first game.

      Man I’ve been saying that for the longest ever since I got into the beauty of cosmos 🌌 our universe aka a thing majority of humanity just takes for granted for pretty much there whole life’s with out exploring and thinking out side of our little bobble planet
      And also started playing a lot of space games like
      mass effect trilogy
      NMS
      Megaton rain fall aka biggest space exploration game ever yet to be matched with the exploration
      Star link
      Elite dangerous
      Or and Star ocean
      Hell it’s a reason I love space anime so much
      Like Star blazer battle ship Yamato
      Like Gundam universal century
      Like gurren lagann will the last 6 episodes that have to do with space my favorite part
      Like knights of sidona
      Hell even the reason I never hated the 180 twist in darling in the franxx unlike so many fans
      But anyway because of all this learning about space
      what will happen In 4.5 billion years to our two galaxys
      What will happen in 5 Billion the sun
      What will happen to the galaxy years after going over the cosmic horizon by the end
      our galaxy will be the last galaxy in this local cluster
      Learning about the laniakea supercluster
      And learning about GOOGOLPLEX years and the end of all stars and heat
      I want to die and be reborn when humanity is more in space 🌌 and colonies orbital elevators 🛗 and on other colony planets so badly
