Thanks to artists like T-Pain, Cher, and Kanye West, Auto-Tune went from being an industry secret to an industry staple. But it didn’t happen overnight. In this video, our hosts Linda Diaz and Arthur Buckner, uncover how Auto-Tune became THE in-demand tool for recording studios, helped artists find their artistic selves, and evolved popular music.

This episode ties in so well with the prior episode on editing classical music recordings. Why do all those takes? Is there no equivalent to Auto-Tune for use on classical music recordings? 🤨 C'mon, Nahre, tell us what you would think if such a tool entered your field, and were used on your performances!
Future plugin idea : Outatune, you can sing really bad, it doesn't touch your voice, but change the tuning of all other instruments so the song is out of tune with your voice.

Clemony's Melodyne could easily be the topic of its own video. It requires a lot more effort from the producer but it's everywhere, tweaking and "correcting" vocal performances so subtly most folks don't even notice, Autotune critics included.
In the 80's a lot of producers used pitch shift pedals meant for guitars among other effects to process vocals, aside from multiple takes. They also sped up tracks in order to hit the desired pitch.. Point is, the stuff haters of autotune think is true and credible, might have been heavily processed too

@@CarlyonProduction so true. Today, both with live with backing tracks that are studio stems and tuned live vox or the newer performances, that claims to be or strives to look live, but are really pre recorded music videos, it's sort of mandatory to have processed vocals. 😅
@@punkkid21 You're making me think of the recent SNL performance by Saweetie. She had super loud main vox and backing vox on playback and was SO OUT OF TIME and out of breath that the whole thing sounded like a big stew.

'She's improving' This is supposed to be a professional performance. Yet people talked about her like she was an 8 year old girl at ballet classes.

People criticize auto-tune today just like how people criticized synths, drum machines and sampling in the 80s-90s and electric instruments in the 50s-70s. A bunch folk fans lost their minds in 1965 when Bob Dylan played an electric guitar on stage.
Auto-tune can make things sound robotic and soulless. It can also be used creatively and as a way to express raw emotion.

Auto tune is fine when it’s used to enhance the vocals or overall song but it’s so overused. It’s gotten to the point in hip hop the entire song is auto tune and every song is auto tune. You don’t even need a actual person to provide the vocals .
@@Metacognition88 Yeah I agree. I love it when it's used to warp vocals and make artists sound weird, I find it can add a lot of flavor and personality to a track (ex: Best Friend by Thugger). I hate it when it's used to make vocalists sound like a robot (ex: Nav's entire career).
That being said, the exact same thing happened with electric guitars in the classic rock era and with synths in the 80s. So this sound will fade out eventually. 20-30 years from now, it'll be some new technology/instrument that gets completely overused.
I also think the roboticness or "soullessnes" of it can be used as artistic expression as well, like it's a really versatile tool. If you only use it for one purpose only, that's when it might lose purpose and become lazy. But it has so many possibilities, using intentional robotic feeling to indicate staleness, rigidness or suffocation etc. Although not auto-tuned focus, Porter Robinson's "Fellow Feeling" is a good example of how to combine serenity with sudden, hard and robotic shaped notes to clearly indicate some sort of event ocurring (in this case its to describe traumatic experience, trapped without help etc). You can 100% do this using vocals as well, I think it's also a good way to blend the feeling of an instrument with a voice. In comparison to vocals, instruments are more often than not a lot more accurate on their notes than humans, especially when transitioning between notes. Auto-tune can also merry these two differences in order to stop a big contrast from occurring where you might not want it to exist, or the opposite, you want a really big contrast so you can use auto-tune to make that note pop out even harder or tune it to a real extreme.
As much as I love singing, metal as well as Opera. Auto-tune when done well just hits different, I think japanese rock/metal/punk(and all their sub-genres) bands are extremely good at using auto-tune which was a genre I did not expect for it to work so insanely well in. Man with a Mission, SiM, Flow, Hello Sleepwalkers, KYONO, Suspended 4th, are good examples of these type of artists for anyone interested in those genres.

There’s some Autotune on the chorus they played but it’s on the verse that it’s used as an effect.
A friend if mine, who engineered my first album told me about his uncle, also an engineer, who recorded Cher's Believe. They were all so exhausted because after 120 some odd takes of her being out of tune, they finally just autotuned the whole thing. It was the worst! It was also what made overly autotuned vocals a trend. People liked it. I love Cher, but I cannot stand that song. Within one second of hearing an overly autotuned vocal in a song, I'm OUT. Have I used it? Yes because it IS a helpful tool eliminating the need for retakes IE; money, but only on a few notes here and there and doing our very best to make it undetectable. Now, if you're Daft Punk, fine. They're robots! Anyone else overusing it, regardless of skills ( even Beyonce has overused it. Like, WHY? Obviously she's got pipes) is just painful to listen to.

@@user-fo9lw3pq8l fair, it may not have been clear. The initial list is a bunch of mix and processing steps that are probably pretty common on most vocal recordings - even on some older ones that didn't ever use autotune. Compression, EQ, Reverb, and Echo are especially common and pretty much always have been.
But people will point at autotune as if it's somehow the sole offender when it comes to creating "unnatural" vocal recordings. The reality is that in most cases, recorded vocals are processed in multiple ways. So there's a hypocrisy in claiming that vocal recordings in "the good old days" were "natural."
The way I see it, good artists use tools like autotune to enhance their art, bad artists rely on tools like autotune to make art.

In the end we're all just listening to what we like, so if someone like autotune robotic music then that's what they like, they're not hurting anybody. And the artist isnt hurting anybody either, they're just making music for their fans
I disagree. I believe art is art and it’s how you chose to view that. Music is like painting a picture.
I never got anger towards autotune even at it's peak in the mid to late 00s. It's just a studio effect like anything else and as you mentioned the spiritual successor to vocoders and talkboxes.
Using the logic of anti autotune you better remove all studio effects like echo, guitar pedals etc since it's not natural! It's absurd and ignorant.

I personally don't like autotune when it's obvious, and I'd rather hear raw imperfections in the singers performance, instead of airbrushed, homogeneous sounds.
That said, autotune is like any tool. A hammer can repair, a hammer can destroy. It all depends on how you use it.

And your perception of u not liking them or understanding why they're liked would lead u to think they're "overrated", when in reality that artist just isnt for u. People obviously enjoy their music and that's why they're in the position they're in. Its just not ur cup of tea, and theres nothing wrong with that. But it doesnt mean they're "overrated"
I'm glad that this exists, so I can have better explain why some songs that "overuse" their autotune bug me, while still enjoy how is autotune is used elsewhere
People who criticize Autotune are almost always non-producers. In my experience, Autotune doesn't make a bad singer magically sound good. It really can't be used as a crutch for the lack of skill without it being obvious. Autotune saves a lot of time and energy and reduces costs for both producers and musicians in the long run. You don't have to do 100 takes of the same line to get the perfect take. Just correct a good take with pitch-correction and move on. The outcome is exactly the same with far less work and cost.
You’re right that Autotune won’t make a bad singer sound magically better, but at the same time, modern production teams overuse Autotune to “fix” vocals - like a photo that’s too heavily edited. Whenever I hear songs like “Firework” by Katy Perry or “Fly Away” by Lenny Kravitz, I know that Autotune was used because everything sounds too perfect, too in tune. I hear a similar thing happening with drums that are run through quantization algorithms in order to get the beats to be more “in time,” and all that happens is that the performance ends up sounding stiff and loses its human feel.
@@aaronclift It's important to look at pitch-correction is 2 ways: a practical device to save time or a device for artistic expression. I think the conversation completely changes between the two. I was mainly referring to the more practical use.
But, the respond to your point, I think that just depends on the type of music being made. I believe there's a strong correlation between heavy pitch-correction use and instrumentals with a lot of production or synthetic tonal elements. In these scenarios, it can feel like the vocals are a leading synth among the backing track which then calls for perfect pitch because the rest of the song is in perfect pitch. I find my own use of pitch-correction drastically decreases with music that's being driven by quieter acoustic elements.
I'm not saying you're wrong in your opinion. I agree that a lot of music has much to gain with pitch-unaltered vocals like Adele's new single (Adam Neely and Beato did neat pieces on this) that's driven by an accompanying acoustic-like piano. I even love Kid Cudi probably because of how good his hooks are even while being largely out of tune. I just think that many people look at pop music as being easily digestible and easy to listen to. Perfect pitch-correction and quantization is pivotal to achieve that.
@@DivinumX I am a pop vocalist. Pop music was plenty easy to listen to and digestible for decades, pre-AutoTune - when performed by talented and often trained vocalists who could sing mostly in key. I agree with the above commenter that it’s way overused these days, to mask out of tune or flat out bad singing. I think there’s artful use of AutoTune when used selectively and with restraint. But when overused, it squeezes all the life out of the vocal performance.
i just hate how it sounds
That is the issue. It erases the imperfections and rawness of music. A little bit of adjustments are okay, but having a lot of songs being overly edited erases something for me. Heavy auto tune is also grating to my ears. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me.
First time in this channel. I love the content. I used to hate auto-tune before. But learning more about music production, I learn to appreciate it more as an instrument than just an enhancer.

I think the problem is more that it's overused. If you turn to certain tv channels you're guaranteed to hear that specific sound within five minutes. It's a cliche.
i always heard people talk about autotune and melodyne like they did the same thing so it was nice to get an explanation!
if i got it right autotune adjusts pitch automatically and can give you the "robot" effect, while melodyne tells you how the note was off and leaves it up to you if and how you wanna correct it
It does get a little bit more complicated with Auto-tune pro which has some Melodyne features

I still bump all of T-Pain's music. I didn't care about the autotune backlash. He was the best to ever to do it! Plus I listened to his albums and there were quite a few songs on them without autotune.
Western music has been dominated the the equal-tempered twelve tone scale for over a hundred years now, even though it is a system of compromises that renders some harmonies pretty badly. Until recently, though, most musicians have been able to use nuances of pitch to increase expressiveness (e.g. bending strings, changing the way they blow, or singing). With digital synths and autotune, the default is to lock pitches down perfectly to this imperfect system, which has never been possible before. It's not that any one song is "bad" for using these technologies, but something is slowly but surely getting sucked out of the musical air we breathe.

I feel like a lot of the people who use autotune to modify their voices in their music are genuinely amazing artists, but they use it for aesthetic reasons. Lady Gaga is an excellent example of this, imo, as are many of the examples used here.
It's just the artist making their art, and It takes talent to use autotune well. When talented people use it, it can be its own style. Having happened a bit before my time, it was interesting to hear about how T Pain was (presumably, one of) the first of the craft. Thanks for the video, using brushes at the end there was genius by the way.
It takes talent to be a great singer and consistently sing in tune. Sure you can use it as an effect in small doses, but it should never be used to compensate for sub-standard singers.

Autotune is the uncanny valley of audio effects. I have yet to hear a piece of music where I think: "you know what would make this music sound better - Autotune."
Do you apply the same logic to EQ, compression, and distortion?

The first effect processor I bought (Boss SE-50) I bought to get a vocoder. I’ve always seen technology as a way to expand creativity and that’s how I see Autotune. Thanks for the great video.

Great episode! I thought I could spot auto tuned sounds a mile away. Now, I learn that it almost always on, and that they adjust the calibrations so that I can’t tell unless they’re intentionally affecting a more robotic sound. 😂

Yes, no song in the past 15-20 years is released without autotune. Even when it's not cranked up to sound robotic it's still there to polish up the vocals and make everything sound presentable.
As always we do not lament/condemn the use of a tool/thing but the overuse of it , it's about the balance & harmony/balance is the soul(insert fav alternative) of music.

So tired of Auto Tune both using it for pitch correction and using it as an effect. Listen to the new Adele song no Autotune she does go off pitch but it's part of the feel she's giving the melody, just like singers did before autotune. There are times when being slightly off pitch or slightly off the beat is part of the singer interpreting the song. As we would say giving Soul.
However I would not guarantee at all that some Melodyne isn’t used on Adele’s albums also, in fact I’d bet it was. Very few albums are probably receiving no touch ups from one of these tools.

I think autotune has become a sort of instrument, and many people criticize it for being singers cheap way to fool everyone into thinking they sing well, but the artists aren't trying to do that, but apply it in their songs to give it the signature robotic distortion

In studios most engineers use some form of tuning but not in the sense of hard pitch correcting like auto tune. It’s just to fix a note here or there. They do it during the editing stage of the record using waves tune, meladyne autotune but in the graphical mode to massage notes, this helps it sound natural. Some producers who work with singers will set up auto tune as an aux during the recording and get the vocalist to sing through it to let the singer know when they missed a note and get it right on the next take

Well this fact is, bizzare, at least for an Indonesian like me where the plugin almost never been used live, one of the cause is Dangdut, a prominent genre here, with its extreme pitchbendings, would essentially screw up any automatic pitch correction plugins.

I never cared for auto tune, especially when it's overdone 😖. It's honestly why I didn't like TPain when he first came out, I hated the sound🥴. But over time I got used to him. Now everyone is using it even singers which is confusing. Rappers crying using it😭😭😭🤦🏾♀️

In my opinion, it's stupid to hate on something cuz people use it in ways that you may find kinda sus.
Problem is the abuse of auto-tune and using it as part of manufacturing pop stars that can't sing. Some famous "singers" have been recorded without auto-tune and it's evident they don't have the skills, because they have not trained as much as real singers.
I honestly prefer it for Pitch correction. Comes in handy in this day and age where people want to be perfect.
Perfection is subjective to the listener. A natural vocal with slight pitch irregularities is (IMO) a much more 'perfect', emotional, and creative sound.
In my opinion, the defense doesn't make sense and doesn't really invalidate the arguments against autotune. I generally still enjoy the old hundred-takes method of artificial pitch correction. At least with that you're getting the result of a bunch of hard work and genuine effort and human vocalization, not artificially pitched vocals. And you can definitely tell the difference between the instant-pitched vocalists and the time-crafted pitched vocalists. That time in the studio honing their vocals to get that perfect pitch and inflection comes out in performances too.

@@xXChaoticRavenXx I like it because I like the way it sounds, and appreciate the work and confidence that goes into not fixing a pitchy take with pitch correction, but instead singing it over again. It sounds good, it feels good. I know there are a ton of nuanced reasons why you'd use pitch correction or autotune. Maybe they got the perfect pitch on one take but delivery was lacking, then got perfect delivery on another take but pitch was a bit off, which do you use? Why spend time and energy doing it over to get both delivery and pitch perfect? Is it even possible after the 5th time around? Can you recapture the fresh magic of the first imperfect run-through? I understand having to throw in some pitch correction on a track when you've got to pump out the b$nger in a week and don't have time to have a singer craft their performance themself. Especially when everything else on the track is sequenced and aligned in perfect rhythm and pitch, it makes sense to align the vocals perfectly, get that smooth sound for the electronically produced aesthetic. But major respect to the singer singers who actually sang what we're hearing. As a fan of music, as someone who presumably works in the studio, you can't tell me it's not super cringey when they hit the crescendo climax note and the vocal suddenly goes from sugar to splenda because they couldn't actually manage to hit the note clean even once without pitch correction in the studio. I'm like, just rewrite the song if you're gonna phone it in and let the machine pick it up... It's not hitting if you're not actually hitting it, anyway. Easier said than done, yeah, but that's the whole point, isn't it? I'd rather hear a bit of a rough but natural attempt than a perfect run on crutches. But then again, there have been many times where I was listening to a song and thought "Maybe they could have used some autotune here..." so maybe I'm just fooling myself.
Like I guess if autotune is the accepted standard, the status quo, then manualtune is just something special now. All I know is, I have major respect for the process of actually singing on pitch, even if it's multiple takes stitched together. At least I got to hear a singer actually sing it.

I don't think that people hate auto-tune at all. Most of the top 10 listened artist today use it heavily. I mean, they use it as a aesthetic element making it obvious to the listener (listen to Instant Crush by Daft Punk). As a producer, I assure you that 100% of pop artists today use autotune to fine-tune songs, even conceived singers like Mariah Carey.

I think something that should be talked about is accessibility.
Obviously, from a performance perspective, showcasing a lyricist's talent with dry vocals and natural reverb is powerful and intimate.
However, not everyone has access to the time or training to be a professional singer. Most people don't even consider that an end goal. Still, they may want to use their own vocals in a bedroom production to express what they want (or need) to express.
With pitch corrections software like Kerovee, while an incredibly colorful plugin, it opens up possibilities that some budding teenage artist might need to find their passion and forge their way forward.
I think the discussion isn't about balance, and whether or not someone "should" use it. I don't believe we can have that discussion until we can empower artists and producers by giving them space to use these tools to express themselves.

Honestly… singers are so used to auto-tune they will quite literally sing like it. Drummers are so used to programmed drums they will quite literally play like it (you know… dynamics capped out at 127). 🤣 Technology really informs the way we play music.
I never use Autotune but to me Autotune to me it's like playing with Optimus prime & Megatron pretty much!

I definitely agree that auto tune can be used for distorting voices and such. That said, what's the difference then between that distorted vocal and an actual artificial vocal? That's part of why Vocaloids became a thing in Asia as well… In what case does human voices beat artificial? So in the end I think auto tune is still mostly useful for tuning a human voice while still preserving the humanity.

would it be possible to apply tpain level autotune to a melody on some other instrument, say a guitar solo or a wind instrument? what would i sound like, is it ever done?
Yes you could auto tune a guitar solo and have the plugin automatically correct all the notes. This is more commonly done with autotune pro or melodyne where you can single out the individual note and slide it to exactly where you’d like it. That way let’s say a violinist in a quartet accidentally plays one wrong note. Instead of having the whole group start over this could be easily fixed.
Autotune was around since spring of 97. Got used on the spice girls album that year
