This seems to look like the rare example of a game with pixel graphics actually done well and not just leaning on the "retraux" thing as an excuse to be lazy.
It also has to do with people not taking advantage of modern tech. Here's some very "8-bit" style stuff that won't have been possible back in the day: 1041uuu.tumblr.com/?DesignTAXI&DesignTAXI&DesignTAXI&DesignTAXI&DesignTAXI
This game looks really charming. Some people think that 2D is played out but I think when done right its looks far better then 3D. When the artstyle is well done and the world is fully fleshed out and drawn its almost like the background tells a part of the story. It gives off a hint of mystery that modern games just don't give me.
agree. They think that cause there is so freaking many! but only a handful with this much quality!. There's so much that can be done with this style of game!
In my opinion, 2D can never be played out. It is to 3D games what cartoons and anime are to live-action film. Not better or worse it's just different. There will always be good and bad in both mediums, as well as fans who like one better than the other, and they will have periods of higher and lower market saturation, but I doubt either will be going anywhere. I take comfort in that as I love them both when they're done well.
I'd glad that 2D games have made a comeback in the last 5 years or so, it just goes to show that no matter how photo-realistic your game looks it doesn't matter if the gameplay sucks. Gameplay is king.
I highly recommend Mother 3 and LISA, the latter being easily the most soul destroying thing I've ever experienced, while simultaneously being the funniest. LISA goes to places too dark for most other games to ever want to touch.
I can't believe I actually gasped at 26:58 where the rocks come falling down. I thought Geddy was about to get crushed in some tragic story development. I was surprisingly immersed. Promising!
From what I remember, the artist (or at least one of them) for this game is the same artist who did a number of Savant's album covers (an artist that D-Pad studio also made a game for). Honestly the talent that's gone into this game is great and I am looking forward to playing it.
*slams hands on desk* I HAVE LITERALLY WAITED YEARS FOR THIS GAME. AT LAST. *watches more* I... I am in love with these characters ;___; I want to see them be happy and safe.
And Strix is a reference to Greek mythology, too! I love the little details they've put in this game. It's so, so clear that the devs genuinely care, a lot, about what they're doing.
8:10 i know this is a WEIRD fucking thing to mention... But, i think this is the first time in gaming history that i've ever seen a 2d platformer or adventure game or rpg, that actually made the effort of drawing something OUTSIDE the open door when you're inside a building. Even absolute masterpiece classics like Final Fantasy never had that. Every single game i've ever played or seen before, has just had a black shadow to represent an open door, or a fuzzy white light. Never an actual "rendered" drawn outside world. Amazing. Just such a little simple thing, draw a blue and green sprite instead of a black shadow, but makes a huge difference.
jack drive I wasn't trying to take shots at No Man's Sky, I was just saying that Jim probably was. I haven't played NMS yet b/c I don't have a PS4 and my PC's got a whopping 32 MB of video memory, but I still think it looks like something I'd enjoy
no i mean why is your profile picture literally a b, there are so many letters around youtube now, its hillary clinton, shes trying to take over youtube! TRUMP 2016!
Ah, I thought you meant short for a certain term for a female dog. I don't know, it's just automatically changed to the first letter in my username. I've noticed it in some other places too, though I don't know why it's some people and not everyone without a pic
Aww, hey! I worked with the dev team at PAX keeping their demo booth ship-shape! They were awesome people, I could count on them for help with anything in the area. Just spotted this in related videos and got all excited and decided I had to comment for whatever reason. Always so cool to see games and be like "ah! I know who made that! They're cool people!"
The good thing about pixelated game is that they age very gracefully, so, if a game is good, it can take a long while to be released and it will still look good.
To be honest I had... well, not forgotten about Owlboy, but it was definitely on the backburner in my mind. I'm really REALLY jazzed for it all over again after seeing this footage. Hits so many great points for me, can't wait to see the full release!
I would have laughed if when you dropped that guy it just went straight to a gameover screen of the earth and in large letters it says "the future refused to change"
I love games like this. That look simple but have really extensive animations. Like just that book opening when you read it and it jumps a little when you close it. This game just looks like a joy to play.
What a charming and gorgeous looking game. I can't get enough of 2D sprite based games with great animations. Oh... and i love owls. Seems like this is just perfect for me. ^^
This looks like a REALLY charming and quaint game, I love it. The SNES vibes are too strong they're glorious, I really want to give this a shot when it comes out.
I wonder if the dialogue changes depending on how you do on the tutorial. The teacher may be proud of you instead of abusive if you successfully do everything, and then it changes what the dream voices, scientist and bully owls say as well as Otus' expressions during them. That would be pretty cool and encourage the player to do multiple playthroughs.
Owlboy looks like a game that was trapped in a bubble, but finally open to a new age. Maybe it has something that alot of games have forgotten to improve. Like a good story. Can't wait to play it.
Owl.... Have to remember this, eh? Ehhhhh? But seriously, this game is gorgeous. Thank you for making this nearly an hour, and thank god for you glorious toolshed you.
Blank3tM0nst3r well of course it was coined due to the movie, but that doesn't really make it a reference. hell, I bet 99% of the people who use the term haven't even seen it.
I need this in my life. The art style is gorgeous, the gameplay looks more intriguing than your bog-standard indie platformer, I REALLY liked how dark and depressing it got at the beginning (lends a lot to the main character) and, well, owls are dope. Also, dat sweet 60fps
Holy cow, this game is beautiful! I'm glad that it also appears to be pretty damn good, i was a little worried when i read the title of the video, i have to admit ^^
I totally forgot about this game. I thought they just never worked on it again. I had a bookmark of their website on my older PC. Good thing they are actually making progress.
This level of sprite animation is almost wastefully good. Like what game the game even do for me to feel like I'm doing the art justice. Progressing through levels would actively make me feel bad.
It may have taken lots of time, but wow. This game looks incredibly polished. It looks more like a love crafted game, which is hard to find these days.
This game , like chasm and Secrets of Grindea, really shows promise in it's detailed and flowy pixel art style. Also Music and sound design where on point in this video. I am really curious about the release date. It is rare that a 50 Minute video can suck me in after i initially thought "ok let's watch 5 Minutes of it".
That jackass mocking you and telling you that you're worthless reminds me of my childhood. "I cannot describe how disappointed I am in you." I've heard that one a few times.
This is *really* good pixel artwork and animation. I'm very interested. Thanks for the show, Jim.
This seems to look like the rare example of a game with pixel graphics actually done well and not just leaning on the "retraux" thing as an excuse to be lazy.
It also has to do with people not taking advantage of modern tech.

Those are really nice and colourful.
This game looks really charming. Some people think that 2D is played out but I think when done right its looks far better then 3D. It gives off a hint of mystery that modern games just don't give me.
agree. They think that cause there is so freaking many! but only a handful with this much quality!. There's so much that can be done with this style of game!
Yes, and even more important is that the art style is unique and has charm to it, otherwise no matter how detailed it will look dull.
It isn't just visuals either, some gameplay elements simply work better in 2D too.
This is the most depressed and charmed I've been by a game at the same time.
+
Last time I've felt that way was with Majora's Mask.
Take a look at To the Moon, the most emotional gaming experience I've had. The mix of feelings at the end is crazy.
Last I felt was Undertale I think.
I'm down for that sad yet charming shit.
Promising!
That Pixel art is absolutely gorgeous!
Jim, your enthusiasm for charming games like this is infectious.
Your a boy now, your an owl now. Your a boy. Your a owl. Your a boy now!
I hate to be that guy but.....
You're*
You're You're You're You're You're**
Congratulations.
You ARE that guy.
You beat me to it.
"You ARE" can be contracted into "you're". Just sayin'.
I thought cunts did the contracting... =O
YOU'RE AN OWL NOW
YOU'RE A BOY NOW
your an owl, boy!
I actually clutched my heart when Otus walked outside, so gorgeous, so lovely...
Was anyone else compelled to stop the video at 28:18 to translate the mural?
It says "Thankyou for playing!" FYI.
I was wondering what was up with the numbers. When you say translate what language is used and how did you translate it.
+
+CryoBlizzard
1 = A, 2= B, 3=C and so on.
Nice. Good on you for figuring that out.
okay i see JreengusOccured
"Now that we've picked up Geddy Lee here", thanks, Jim, that's the most awesome thing I've ever heard you say.
I usually don't watch these vids all the way through..but this was really interesting.
From what I remember, the artist (or at least one of them) for this game is the same artist who did a number of Savant's album covers (an artist that D-Pad studio also made a game for). Honestly the talent that's gone into this game is great and I am looking forward to playing it.
This is it. This is my game. I need this in my life.
*slams hands on desk* I HAVE LITERALLY WAITED YEARS FOR THIS GAME. AT LAST.
*watches more* I... I am in love with these characters ;___; I want to see them be happy and safe.
Those two bully owls names.....Fibonacci sequence reference or just coincidence?
Heh, Fibonacci pun.
And Strix is a reference to Greek mythology, too! I love the little details they've put in this game. It's so, so clear that the devs genuinely care, a lot, about what they're doing.
Where?
***** The pair of bullies are called Fib and Onacci.
MarioGMan25 OH.
Totally missed that. Derp.
The singer is also called "Mandolyn" like the instrument, a mandolin.
8:10 i know this is a WEIRD fucking thing to mention... But, i think this is the first time in gaming history that i've ever seen a 2d platformer or adventure game or rpg, that actually made the effort of drawing something OUTSIDE the open door when you're inside a building.

Amazing. Just such a little simple thing, draw a blue and green sprite instead of a black shadow, but makes a huge difference.
Yeah! It's a great touch!
My jaw dropped when I saw that first death animation, holy mother of owls this is beautifully done!!
You can just tell that at 11:33 he hesitates because he really wants to make a No Man's Sky joke.
why are you a b?
jack drive I wasn't trying to take shots at No Man's Sky, I was just saying that Jim probably was. I haven't played NMS yet b/c I don't have a PS4 and my PC's got a whopping 32 MB of video memory, but I still think it looks like something I'd enjoy

hah...Fib and Onacchi... fibonacci
Why would bullies be named after a mathematician, though?
Really nice question :D
Irony?
I'd assume because they are in a downward spiral :U
Bonacci, not Onacchi.
Man if this game actually releases this year... I'll be pleased about it.
thanks Jim, every day I always smile at your vids.
Holy cow look at the depth of pixels my goodness!! its beautiful!!
Been watching this one a loong time as well. So goddamn excited!
So glad this is finally coming out, It looks even better than I had ever hoped!
This game looks absolutely phenomenal. The art and animation quality are superb. Can't wait to get my grubby little hands on it!
"Can he duck?" Of course he can't duck. He's an owl.
"I'll never have to walk again!" You never had to walk before, you had an owlboy carrying you around!
Anyone see the title "No Owl's Sky" and just think "Oh God Jim's gonna rip it to shreds..."?
This looks really good. I'm excited and I hadn't heard about it before now.
The sprite work in this game looks amazing, beautiful. No wonder it took so long to work on.
The good thing about pixelated game is that they age very gracefully, so, if a game is good, it can take a long while to be released and it will still look good.
Bravo to the devs! This is a really charming indie game!
I have every bit of faith with the devs behind this game. All super talented and creative folks. Can't wait to finally play this.
Wow, I was glued to the video for the entire duration. I should definitely get this game.
Looks beautiful and I am a sucker for these kind of Metroidvania-ish games. Looking forward to this one.
why are you an a?
"Can I duck?" no jim...... this is owlboy.
This game looks gorgeous. I love pixel art and this just looks brilliant.
To be honest I had... well, not forgotten about Owlboy, but it was definitely on the backburner in my mind. I'm really REALLY jazzed for it all over again after seeing this footage. Hits so many great points for me, can't wait to see the full release!

I love games like this. That look simple but have really extensive animations. Like just that book opening when you read it and it jumps a little when you close it. This game just looks like a joy to play.
I can't remember the last time I was genuinely excited for a game, this looks fantastic!
'Idiolect' is the word you're looking for, Jim. Someone's personal style/way of speaking is called their idiolect
Really digging the art style in this game, I think it looks lovely!
This is some impressive pixel animation. The little details they put in are great.
So much detail. It's beautiful.
oh my god, this game is beautiful!
I love the art style, it reminds me of the psOne era of games with hand drawn graphics.
I really like how this looks. The gameplay takes some actual imagination.
What a charming and gorgeous looking game. I can't get enough of 2D sprite based games with great animations. Oh... and i love owls. Seems like this is just perfect for me. ^^
this games so pretty I like that I can tell what Owlboy is feeling
This looks like a REALLY charming and quaint game, I love it. The SNES vibes are too strong they're glorious, I really want to give this a shot when it comes out.
This game looks fucking fantastic. I'm hype as hell.
They really put a lot of hard work on the main character animations, freaking love it lol
A lot of love clearly went into this game.
8 years of it to be precise.
I'm getting a Kid Icarus vibe from the music in this game. Also somehow this reminds me of Wind Waker which is a good thing.
I truly hope this game goes far, because it looks wonderful. I also hope someone makes a Medli, because that, too, would be wonderful :3
Owlboy looks like a game that was trapped in a bubble, but finally open to a new age. Maybe it has something that alot of games have forgotten to improve. Like a good story. Can't wait to play it.
This looks really good! will definitely buy if it comes to Ps4.
Thanks for showing this, doubt I would have heard of it otherwise.
This game looks fantastic. Classic look and solid game-play. I like the naming conventions as well. Wishlisted.
at 27:48 the wall reads: "thank you for playing!". I think it's a very nice touch
jim feel free to show more of this game as it moves forward. ur reactions to owl boi are adorable
I dig this a lot. It sort of speaks to my early life in a way that makes me uncomfortable lol..
why are you a w?
Washcloth
You do know that you just insulted yourself.
Look at the big brain on Brad!
anyway if you vote donald trump owl boy will come out sooner and be a perfect game!
jack drive Wumbo, the W is for Wumbo
This looks so awesome. I don't need to see anymore after 14:00 minutes. I'll wait for the full release.
Man, really wish the game audio were more prominent. Game look really neat, and with Jim praising the music, I really wanna hear it, DAMMIT!!!! xD
This game looks amazing. Can't wait for it to come out :)
Owl.... Have to remember this, eh? Ehhhhh?
But seriously, this game is gorgeous. Thank you for making this nearly an hour, and thank god for you glorious toolshed you.
I did my SATS, GCSE's, As levels and A-levels plus one year in the time it took to make this game . Some perspective for you.
At least they got money for it.
So that's why the game looks gorgeous and polished, even for a demo. Good perspective.
I've earned two degrees in the time it took for this demo to come out.
+WolfCoder I took over the world in a month. That's how boring this game is
I have been waiting so long for this game to show some sign of life...
Love the reference to Gaslight lol I will have to start using that in conversation even tho no one will know what the hell I mean.
I don't really think it could be considered a REFERENCE, gaslighting is the technical term for that sort of mental abuse
Well it still is a movie about that so, that's pretty much what a reference is.
? that's an actual term: www.wikiwand.com/en/Gaslighting
According to the above article, the term was actually coined due to the movie. So NaneelQueenofDarkness is technically right as anyone else.
Blank3tM0nst3r
well of course it was coined due to the movie, but that doesn't really make it a reference. hell, I bet 99% of the people who use the term haven't even seen it.

Holy cow, this game is beautiful! I'm glad that it also appears to be pretty damn good, i was a little worried when i read the title of the video, i have to admit ^^
I remember this from ages ago, looks even better than I remember. That Secret of Mana-esque pixel art.
Yes, this does look like a game that's been polished for eight years. All shiny and smooth.
My favorite so far Jim, very funny
I'd love to see you finish off the demo, the game looks fantastic.
When he picked up the Owl Relic button thing, that was definitely a Zelda-type animation. Like that is one of the most famous Link poses ever!
Been waiting 6 thanks for showing
I totally forgot about this game. I thought they just never worked on it again. I had a bookmark of their website on my older PC. Good thing they are actually making progress.
This game looks fantastic. Well done, devs! Final stretch!
This is the first "retro" game I've seen that actually *gives* me a retro feel.
This level of sprite animation is almost wastefully good.
Like what game the game even do for me to feel like I'm doing the art justice.
Progressing through levels would actively make me feel bad.
It looks bloody gorgeous.
This looks really really really good. I'm actually shocked. A good game? I heop so!
I just love games like this. I have Cross Code and Secrets of Grindea on my radar and now this game. Looks like it'll be a fun one.
Can't wait to play the full version
The pixel art and sprites remind me of Metal Slug.
This looks beautiful and I need it @_@
8 years... is everything I've been waiting for coming out at the same time?
It may have taken lots of time, but wow. This game looks incredibly polished. It looks more like a love crafted game, which is hard to find these days.
That game looks very impressive.
Played this recently, and must say I found it quite an **uplifting** game.
Is Jim just going to reference Guise of the Wolf every time a map is brought up?
I mean, it DOES help.
Well, considering he's been doing it for 2 years now, I'm gonna say "yes".
Yes, now go back to polishing bollocks, you.
Good evening, milord.
These animations are insane. There's so much stuff that "technically" isn't necessary, but they put it in anyways.
23:05 - Random tetris blocks!
28:23 - "Thank you for playing!"
That jackass mocking you and telling you that you're worthless reminds me of my childhood.
"I cannot describe how disappointed I am in you."
I've heard that one a few times.
